Ken Ober

Ken Ober, a brassy comedian best known as the host of the 1980s-era MTV game show "Remote Control," died on Sunday, Mark Measures, an agent at Abrams Artists who worked with him, said on Monday. Mr. Ober, who lived in Los Angeles, was 52. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Mr. Ober, who grew up in Boston idolizing game show hosts like Bob Barker and Bob Eubanks, went on to host four game shows of his own, including a revived version of "Make Me Laugh" in 1997. But his breakthrough came a decade earlier when Mr. Ober, a contestant on the televised talent show "Star Search," became the host of the MTV series "Remote Control" in 1987. [NY Times]

Man, that was such a good show for the times.

Didn't Adam Sandler and Collin Quinn basically get their starts with Remote Control or am I confusing it with another MTV game show?

Posted by Dan | November 16, 2009 4:40 PM

don't forget Kari Wuhererer, who got her start and finish with Remote Control.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2009 4:53 PM

Dan,
No you are correct. It was Remote Control. And let's not forget about the hot and now big fake tittied Kari Wuhrer also got her start on that show as well as Marisol Massey.

My older brother was a contestant on this show and my family were all in the audience and met Ken after. Really nice cool guy from what i can remember. Not to mention this was such a fun show.
I still have the board game and i will whip out tonite in memory.

Sad. R.I.P.

oh man. I loved Remote Control! That sucks. He will be missed

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2009 4:57 PM

Wow, how randomly sad. Haven't thought about this man/show in so long. The MTV of now has nothing on this era.

Also, wasn't Kari Wuherer on that MTV beach challenge show too? What was that called?

remote control was the beginning of nonmusic shows on MTV, unfortunately. Fortunately, it was also really funny - at least in my memory. Hope he died as happily as possible.

what happened to Kevin Seal? he was the best host that 120 Minutes ever had.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2009 5:04 PM

John Stewart got his start there too.

wow...crazy....i wonder what the cause of death is....what a great show....this is when mtv was good.

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2009 5:21 PM

Very sad in such an odd way. We of the 40 something crowd that grew up with MTV (it WAS the best thing back in the day) start to see people die and it just really hits home.

RIP and thanks for the makeing the 80's fun.

Oh...to have a life without cell phones and blogs.

Brian Posehn is saying hoax...

'Remote Control' was fantastic.

"Brian Posehn is saying hoax..."

That was hours ago. His most recent tweet says:

"Just had sad news confirmed. RIP Ken Ober. "

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2009 5:56 PM

rumors where it was a hoax and then the hoax rumors were the hoax....does that make sense?

Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2009 5:56 PM

Loved Ken Ober... he was hilarious. I never missed an episode of Remote Control.

Dead or Canadian...my favorite category.

Posted by lurlene | November 16, 2009 7:32 PM

heart attacks suck, but I'm sure he's glad it wasn't a lazy boy accident.

A revival of that gameshow would be a huge hit. Those categories were so creatively funny. Dead or Canadian? C'mon!! All that would be needed is an update of the shows referenced, like Seinfeld, etc...

bummer man. I LOVED that show.

so sad. RIP up in Canada, Ken

Posted by Anonymous | November 17, 2009 12:19 AM

Steve,

What an insightful suggestion. An update to the shows referenced. That really is a deep and thoughtful rethinking of what is necessary for the revival. And your invocation of Seinfeld is profound. No one would have ever thought of Seinfeld . . . deep shit you are sitting on.

Please, what other gems are you holding from the rest of civilization?

Posted by Anonymous | November 17, 2009 8:06 AM

love the show

RIP Ken

Anon 8:06....you blew it!

We almost had a streak on BV for most positive comments in a row without some snarky ass chiming in with nonsense.

i cant believe no one has said mehrote control yet....any event RIP ken ober, the comedy scene just got a little less funny

Posted by Anonymous | November 17, 2009 11:26 AM

At 52? Something weird must have happened. 'Cause unknown' isn't cutting it.

Posted by Gadget Sleuth | November 17, 2009 12:05 PM

I just bought that Sherwood cassette player. Yeah, it pretty much kicks ass.
