Sonic Youth

There's not much to say aside from how excellent Tuesday night's performance was, Sonic Youth's first of two nights in a row at Music Hall of Williamsburg (11/24). You can read the review Andrew wrote about their Terminal 5 gig Saturday night. The song selection was similar. The venue was smaller.

"Sonic Youth was AWESOME. That they can still be THIS good this late in their career is amazing, and very unique. I really enjoyed the new stuff and thought it jelled well with the old stuff they did play. I can see why they're doing so much new stuff, to keep things interesting (for us and them). A bunch of songs from all over their career would have been interesting as long as they didn't stick to the same "greatest hits" every night. Still hoping like crazy for Death Valley [Wednesday]!" [Joe]
It was the third time I've seen them this year, and by far the best: the energy and execution was just on point. Looking at the photos of them at the end, you can tell they enjoyed it, too: check out Thurston's satisfied, boyish grin, right after capping encore two with "Silver Rocket".

"No more songs," a wave goodbye, and that grin.

Talk Normal opened the show Tuesday. Jemina Pearl opened Wednesday. More headliner pictures and the setlist from the first night, below...

The Eternal is the best Sonic Youth album since Daydream Nation. I went to both shows, plus Terminal 5. The Terminal 5 show was the sickest concert ever! The MHOW shows were great, but the crowd was less enthusiastic.

True. I havent liked anything theyve done since Evol, but The ETernal retored my faith in the bands ability to rule the planet.

The Eternal!!!!

Sacred Trickster is my favorite SY song since Death Valley. It really is their return to form. The T5 show ruled.

2nd night was majical!

Set lists please?

Great photos BV! U rule!

Rather Ripped sucked. Thank god for The Eternal. The Rather Ripped album/tour was a disaster.

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 6:29 PM

Yes Sonic Youth is still great live but I question what the hell their doing when Kim and Thurston are at Marc Jacobs fashion show. Thats worse than selling CD's in starbucks

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 6:29 PM

I never liked the Eternal till I saw them play it live Now it is my favorite. I love that song Antennae and Massage the History.

Hee haw, so many obvious newcomers to Sonic Youth making comments. That's ok though. Got a free ticket to Terminal 5 and paid for Wednesdays. Unlike the 15 year old Steve making the first comment, my review of a show is about the band and not the crowd. In terms of energy, intensity and most of all SOUND the Music Hall show beat Terminal Shit by a country mile. And from the looks of the set lists I will take Wednesday any day. A freaking heavy Death Valley 69 trumped everything.

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 7:29 PM

Thurston is banging Jemina. Poor Kim has to suffer his creepiness.

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 7:36 PM

^^ no doubt, I mean is there any other reason he is "backing" her....you think he would've figured out her music is pathetic by now

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 7:39 PM

Death Valley would be maybe the 8th best song on The Eternal. Glad to hear the oldies but the newies are better in every way.

I love Rather Ripped too-wouldn't mind hearing SY do "Pink Steam" once a year for the rest of time.

After seeing almost every Sonic show in NYC since '92 I have to say that most of you commenting thus far seem either retarded or just aren't real Sonic Youth fans. All of their LPs are at least good. 1000 Leaves wasn't that great and The Eternal is probably the worst thing they've ever released IMO. Murray Street, Sonic Nurse, and Rather Ripped especially, are great records.

The Terminal 5 show was SOOOOO BORING due to the set list. They played really well but they always do....

Get yr shit together mother fuckers, and stop posing.

Whos this guy and 8:56? I saw Sonic Youth Play about seven times between 93 and 2000.They are good live but then there isnt much of a change in their shows since. Their new albums have all these trite tribute songs to "beat writers" like Corso. Id rather Sister or Bad Moon rising.
Their new albums are hit or miss and Murray St only has about three songs that seem genuine.

Thurston MEHoore

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 9:59 PM

IMHO, Sonic Youth should due a three week residency somewhere for the fans. EACH NIGHT is ONE album in chronological order. Everything they've released is great and it's a shame that there's too many choices to fit in a single night and too many great tracks woefully forgotten or dropped over the years.

I WANT TO HEAR IT ALL.

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 9:59 PM

>I WANT TO HEAR IT ALL.

Even the SYR release? In esperanto?

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 10:10 PM

The Eternal is a GREAT album, hands down. If you think otherwise, that's your loss. And Sonic Youth live rules.

Posted by John | November 27, 2009 10:18 PM

the eternal is the best record they've done since daydream. hands down. shit, all their output this decade has just been stellar. i love that they've played every song on this record at the 3 shows i've been to this year.

Posted by ihatehipsterscum | November 27, 2009 10:32 PM

i saw sonic youth for the first time in '83. wingwalker 77 stop your poseur shit. you probably have bleach-blond dreadlocks and never stopped wearing flannel.

mark ibold sucks. i wish they would ask deakin to join.

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 11:00 PM

who is that man in a dress on bass?

Posted by Anonymous | November 27, 2009 11:26 PM

>>>"No more songs," a wave goodbye, and that grin.

Actually he said "that's it" and then Lee said "see you outside". Listening to it now.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 12:30 AM

Catholic Block and Tom Violence = nice. Almost makes me regret not putting down the $35.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 12:58 AM

Jemina Pearl sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 1:01 AM

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 1:14 AM

Someone in that band is probably a good humper.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 2:25 AM

I don't like sonic youth fans.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 2:56 AM

If Mark Ibold could only somehow be in Neutral Milk Hotel, he would have the indie trifecta.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 3:24 AM

Sonic Youth has NEVER made a bad album (the closest being experimental jet set..with the exception of bull in the heather of course!) and I've never seen them play a bad show. seeing them on Wednesday and at terminal 5 has solidified the fact that they are the best band ever! Anyone who saw them close with Death Vally 69' knows what I'm talking about!

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 9:13 AM

SYouth... we missed you @ ACL this year.
Please come back to Austin and play a small club.
I will pay the price.

Gracias!

Posted by TXn | November 28, 2009 10:36 AM

This band is old and irrelevant. All the discussion here about who is a bigger fan and what albums are better is embarrassing to witness.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 11:09 AM

Absolutely great pictures. I was standing on the left balcony, but your perspectives with the camera tops all. Thanks for that. It was a great night.

Posted by Sassan | November 28, 2009 11:10 AM

the only SY record i didn't like was nyc ghosts. rather ripped was awesome and i was fortunate to see them back in '06 at CB's on that tour.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 11:37 AM

wasn't interested in seeing SY cause both venues fucking blow and i have seen them many times before at good venues.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 11:41 AM

I think the second half of EVOL is pretty boring (mainly due to production). Then came Sister and everything was right again.

A Thousand Leaves is a bit of a clunker, too, but Experimental Jet Set really holds up.

The Eternal rules. Stop being such a pussy.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 12:56 PM

Great photos!

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 1:04 PM

goddamn i've waited for yrs to see tom violence live

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 5:40 PM

The Sonic wake up.

Posted by clip porno | November 28, 2009 6:05 PM

Rather Ripped blows away The Eternal, sorry.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 6:31 PM

expressway to yr meh

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 6:32 PM

Thousand Leaves is by FAR their best album of the 1990s. it's got filler and gets off to a slow start...but the Lee songs kill.

their other 90s albums all suck, but they have 1 or 2 decent songs apiece.

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 6:55 PM

that Death Valley on Wed. night was mind blowing

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2009 10:20 PM

omg zooey d. does merch now?

"Sonic Youth has NEVER made a bad album (the closest being experimental jet set..with the exception of bull in the heather of course!)"

wtf?? hell no. experimental jet set and washing machine are their best albums. daydream nation is extremely mediocre. I have no clue why people continue to hype that album to no end.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2009 1:28 AM

I agree. That merch girl is soooo lame.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2009 7:59 AM

merch girl with the bangs for talk normal?

Posted by my my | November 29, 2009 8:36 AM

Is that woman at the merch counter Cat Power? (She's hot)

Hey 11:00, I turned 6 in '83. And you're right, I'm still wearing flannel. If you look at the pics of SY at the shows you attended Thurston never stopped either! Now bleach-blond dreadlocks?! That's just gross!

Mark Ibold doesn't suck. He ruled in Pavement.

Posted by wingwalker77 | November 29, 2009 10:57 AM

mehrch grrl.

Posted by wingwalker77 | November 29, 2009 11:11 AM

rather ripped is fucking amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2009 11:50 AM

I miss Cat Power. New record please!

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2009 6:42 PM

THE ETERNAL RULES! New Sonic Youth fans won't appreciate it, but true fans from the beginning know what it's all about.

Posted by Jim | November 29, 2009 7:43 PM

tend to agree with juno where sonic youth's concerned - apart from carpenter's cover - band sounds like just noize to me.

regards,
dsd

ps - youths no more at any rate.

Posted by drunkenstepdad | November 29, 2009 8:41 PM

Plaid is not equal to flannel.

rock music sucks

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2009 12:25 PM

what's kim doing at Marc Jacobs? they're longtime friends. ever seen the 'sugar kane' video?

also ever heard of x-girl? kim's been in fashion for some time now.

she was front row at alex wang's show for SS10 season too. arguably the best part about his show, save for major lazer's pon de floor as the opening jam. bam.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2009 4:57 PM

Yeah, Sonic Youth is still great live but I question what the hell their doing when Kim and Thurston are at Marc Jacobs fashion show. Thats worse than selling CD's in starbucks
