Jesus Lizard

""I had not seen the Jesus Lizard since Lollapalooza 1995 - the last year I choose to think of as being remotely true to what that festival was about. As hard as it is to believe that was 14 years ago, it is even harder to understand how frontman David Yow & Co. have managed to bring back this band - essentially dormant since 1999 - with this much ferocity. Yow may be 14 years older and a bit worse for wear, but the man caterwauls with an intensity that most 20 year old pretty boys will never match. The Irving crowd - a good portion of whom, at this 16+ show, were not even born when this band began in 1987 - remained in a frenzy throughout the set, turning the Irving floor into a thrashing sea of bodies, flying beers and more than a few sets of broken eyeglasses. While Yow stage-dove, mic in hand, the band delivered their tightly wound hardcore like the experts they are. Covering a range of the band's catalog and with two encores, the 23-song set gave audience members a lot to scream about."

ahhhh...i remember that day in 95...was my first festival. that set was amazing!

didnt beck get boo'd off the stage? i remember tons of people were throwing bottles, garbage, and everything else on the stage...was ridiculous.

Posted by vinny | November 19, 2009 1:35 PM

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 1:37 PM

wasn't his nose, blood was coming from his cheek and eyebroe

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 1:39 PM

The Jesus Lizard is and will always be the best live band in the world and those are the best pictures you could get? for shame

Posted by JT | November 19, 2009 1:59 PM

why dont you pick up a camera and try yourself. see how easy it is when crowd, lights, band is moving all over the place.

no, im not the photog, or his/her friend.

dickbag, get a life.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 2:02 PM

OMG that was at randalls island.. Beck got hit with mud as well.. he almost walked out.. but then he performed "loser" and the crowd calmed down..

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 2:03 PM

"see how easy it is when crowd, lights, band is moving all over the place."

it is easy.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 2:10 PM

rocket from the crypt, im happy for you, imma let you finish... but the roots are the best live band of all time. of all time!

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 2:12 PM

I saw Yow give a good (unintentional) kick to a big camera while he was surfing the crowd.

Posted by Regular reader | November 19, 2009 2:13 PM

monday night was fucking amazing! i am so glad i got to see them live. definitly and experience i will remember for along time.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 2:29 PM

seriously in my top 3 shows of all time

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 2:30 PM

what song was 24?!

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 2:36 PM

@2:08, I can assure you that it is not easy, esp when shooting a band like tJL and you cannot take refuge from the pit by shooting from behind the barricade (at least you couldn't in Boston). It's not so easy to protect yourself and/or stand your ground when your hands are full of expensive equipment. I've got some nice purple bruises to show for it.

Justina's a fine shooter and she's put up plenty of quality stuff. This set is fine. And no, I don't know her.

Posted by tim | November 19, 2009 2:37 PM

PAT the security guard!! You're famous!

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 3:00 PM

Monday night was great, but Tuesday was insane.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 3:11 PM

Can't download the files at work. Can anyone speak to the sound quality?

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 3:13 PM

Rocket was better than The Jesus Lizard and the Roots, but Sweep the Leg Johnny was the greatest live band of all time.

Posted by pk | November 19, 2009 3:23 PM

how come the pictures from vice halloween looked better?

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 3:36 PM

nope, best live band was CHAVEZ!

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 3:37 PM

yow za

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 3:38 PM

kick all in-crowd photogs cameras.
stop ruin shows for us.

Posted by anon | November 19, 2009 3:41 PM

The Jesus Lizard is the worst band ever. I hope they give up after this tour. I would rather read about Pavement reunions for the rest of my life.

Posted by Regular Reader | November 19, 2009 3:51 PM

hey Regular Reader, lick my tight 'n' shiny.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 3:52 PM

They are lousy musicians, but people like to see that douche jump in to the audience and scream like an idiot for an hour.

Posted by Idiot-Core 4 Life | November 19, 2009 3:55 PM

Yow is a legend! The rest of the band are replacable. Qui was just as good. Really, any crappy band behind Yow is the same show. If you don't like Yow, don't see Jesus Lizard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 3:57 PM

BV must have attracted a sizable chunk of readership with an extreme aversion to liking rock music.

Go back to your Feist or LCD Soundsystem cds and stop polluting this thread.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 4:02 PM

I went to the 1st Irving plaza night. I liked them. They remind me of a softer, lesser talented Oxford Collapse.

Posted by Matt | November 19, 2009 4:02 PM

24 = thumper (from shot)

Posted by citizen | November 19, 2009 4:05 PM

I went to that show too. It sucked!! SO BAD!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 4:06 PM

"Yow is a legend! The rest of the band are replacable. Qui was just as good. Really, any crappy band behind Yow is the same show. If you don't like Yow, don't see Jesus Lizard."

I think you're forgetting that Duane Denison and David Sims write all the music and nowhere near replaceable you bint.

Posted by JT | November 19, 2009 4:07 PM

"They are lousy musicians?"
"The rest of the band is replaceable?"
What are you gonna tell me next, Sarah Palin is "deep?"
Ignoramuses.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 4:12 PM

Just cause they write lousy music, doesn't make them essential. Anyone can play that crap. They're replacable and Yow is a useless clown.

The Jesus Lizard is a band for bad musicians in meaningless bands. You should skip their shows and spend your money on guitar lessons, maybe your band wouldn't suck so bad and you'd have better taste.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 4:18 PM

Sorry guys. Ex Models is the best live band around. Definitely gave JL a run for their money.

Posted by Booger | November 19, 2009 4:20 PM

Why must people hate Lizard fans because they back Republicans? Who cares what their politics are?

Posted by da troof | November 19, 2009 4:21 PM

Sims and Mac are one of the greatest rhythm sections ever, and Duane is no slouch on guitar... fuckers

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 4:24 PM

"The rest of the band are replacable."
My monocle flew right off.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 4:26 PM

i went to the monday show and thought they were pretty good but nothing special.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 4:53 PM

4:18-comment of the day.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 4:58 PM

Who are these pukes talking shit about the band??
Watch your lip little coward boy. Duane Denison is an excellent guitar player whose done other projects like the jazz oufit with Jim Kimball that I saw live and is miles ahead of some of the jazz of seen in this town. David and Mac are a solid pair too.

Have not seen them play since 1998 but it looks like this was a damn good show.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 5:29 PM

I remember back way back in SF (88 or 89) at the Warfield Theatre...Jesus Lizard were third on the bill under Dramarama and the Psych Furs. That night, Yow jerked off on stage. Glad to see he's cleaned up just a wee bit.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2009 6:00 PM

Any chance of getting some pics from Tuesday?

Posted by oldmanron | November 19, 2009 9:06 PM

The band was tighter than a ballerina's asshole and Yow sang like a deranged 4 AM drunk locked inside a dumpster. What more could you ask for?

Posted by Brian Farrelly | November 19, 2009 10:05 PM

10:05 has a way with words that makes the bv comments so worthwhile. Win.

i'm in charge mother fucker. you ride with the equipment.

Posted by david wm sims | November 20, 2009 4:25 PM

The people who are talking shit about the band are either the stupidest most clueless people on earth or just typical message board trolls. Either way, their comments deserve no response. If that's how 15 year olds get their kicks these days.. let them have their pitiful fun. It's just because they are not old enough to actually do anything interesting with their lives.

Posted by Anonymous | November 20, 2009 5:14 PM

"Sorry guys. Ex Models is the best live band around. Definitely gave JL a run for their money."

If it weren't for Jesus Lizard, there would be no Ex-Models. Ex-Models are a rip-off of a rip-off of a rip-off...
If only people on here spent more time educating themselves rather than spewing the stupidest uninformed nonsense...
