fatalist

Consider this the "Swedish Death Metal" edition as we'll focus on a few bands that have taken cues from the great sounds of Entombed, Dismember, Grave, and so many others. As such, lets start off with Fatalist! Though they hail from the land of sun and surf (California), Fatalist have nailed the tone of early (Stockholm) Swedish Death Metal sound, putting their own spin in their songwriting. Featuring ex members of Exhumed, Fatalist's debut album The Depths of Inhumanity is out on 11/23 via Ibex Moon and for a taste of the killer riffs that the band has cooked up, dig on "Internal Misery" above.

Lets get it out of the way, Nirvana 2002 is not a boxset from a certain Seattle band. In fact, Nirvana 2002 is the name of a lost Swedish Death Metal band who will finally release their full recorded output via Relapse Records, Recordings 89 - 91. The band that featured vocalist/guitarist Orvar Säfström (ex-Entombed) have released the "Mourning (Projections of a Stained Mind)" MP3, available for download above after it recently premiered on Decibel. If you love the sickening Swedish Death Metal buzzsaw sound, these long lost tracks are a welcome surprise. Orvar Säfström recently discussed his top 6 favorite Swedish Death Metal albums.

Much like Fatalist, Gravehill is also a sickening early death metal worship act from California. Gravehill's Rites Of The Pentagram LP is out NOW via Enucleation and the title track is available for download above. The band recently played the NJ Death Fest along with Acheron, who are releasing their latest LP and first in six years, The Final Conflict: Last Days Of God, on Ibex Moon.

Mala Suerte doom away on their latest crusty, dimly lit LP, The Shadow Tradition, available via Hellride Music. Download a pair of tracks from that Austin band's LP above. Mala Suerte have been around since the 90s and released a few LPs of their filthy Grief-like psychotic doom as well as a split with Japan's Coffins.

A Mala Suerte video for "Non Servium", Coalesce, Ghast, Eyehategod, Fuck The Facts, Zoroaster, Graveyard, thoughts on the new Slayer, and more as TWIM continues...

Mala Suerte - "Non Servium"

Indianapolis blackened doom freaks Coffinworm have signed to Profound Lore, who will release both their massive Bob Fouts (The Gates of Slumber)-produced demo (available via the band) as well as an upcoming LP! Look for that new LP to be recorded by Sanford Parker in early 2010, but in the meantime, dig on the excellently titled "High On The Reek Of Your Burning Remains" from the Great Bringer of Night demo available for download above!

Austin's Brown Jenkins will drop his final LP for Moribund on Nov 24th, Death Obsession. The recently solo doom/black metal project of Umesh Amtey has added a second member for it's final go-around, bassist Demiurge. Pick up that LP here and check out a few tracks for download: "Ashes In Her Mouth" (Edit) above and "Lords Of Suicide" & "Lifetaker" via Mediafire courtesy Not For Resale.

The Shadow of The Torturer features members of Yob, Aldebaran, and H.C. minds ans expected, do a sickeningly massive and depressive take on doom. The Northwestern band's first LP, March Into Chaos, is due this month via Blind Date Records and is available here, but have left a taste for us in the lead off track "The Walk", available above. Doom should always sound this bleak.

UK's Ghast has hit the studio to record a new EP to follow up their debut, May The Curse Bind. Terrible Cemetery will consist of two tracks, one twenty-eight minute monster and one re-recording of an older track, "O Akhea Rheon". Look for that release on Todestrieb Records

Eyehategod on the Temptress (video footage)

Japanese blackened thrashers Abigail have released Sweet Metal Baby Slut via Nuclear War Now! Records and are preparing to head to Berlin to play the NWN Fest on 11/13. The band, which features members of Sigh, will join Bone Awl, Revenge, Villains, Dead Congregation, and many others as part of the two day festival. Details on the fest are here. Pick up Abigail's LP here. Bone Awl recently played Public Assembly with Celestia and Agrath.

Mamiffer is currently recording their new LP with producer Randall Dunn, for a Jan 2010 completion. Guests are a-plently as Aaron Turner, Don McGreevy (Earth), Ted Parsons (Swans), Sera Timms (Black Math Horseman), Brian Cook (These Arms Are Snakes, etc.), and Joe Preston (High On Fire, Melvins, Thrones, etc.) are all confirmed contributors (via).

A389 Records will hold a two day bash in Baltimore on Jan 8th & 9th featuring apperances from Thor ( w/ Pulling Teeth as his backing band), Vincent Black Shadow, Integrity, Ringworm, Gehenna, Starkweather, Pulling Teeth, and Seraphim. More info can be found here.

Spain's (not Sweden) death metal merchants Graveyard have released their new LP, One With The Dead, via Black Seed Productions. Yet another example of what's right about the early death metal revival, you can pick up a copy of that LP here. Check out a video of Graveyard performing "Cemotaph" with Martin Van Drunen (Asphyx, Hail of Bullets) below.

Fight Amp is currently scheduling tour dates for the new year. Want in? Holla atcho boy/girl. Tour routing is below. Fight Amp's new LP, Manners and Praise, is out NOW via Translation Loss.

The Gates Of Slumber - "Ice Worm" Video

Crowbar are scheduled to headline Stillborn fest with Hatebreed, The Acacia Strain, The Casualties, and They Will Be Done. Dudes in basketball jerseys are stoked, Crowbar fans are not. Full tour listing is below.

I must admit, I have a soft spot for Slayer. The band's new LP, World Painted Blood. hits store shelves this week and while I dig the record, I actually liked Christ Illusion much more. World Painted Blood is currently streaming in full.

Speaking of Fuck The Facts, director David Hall has written and directed a video based on the band's LP, Disgorge Mexico. Hall, who is responsible for the mindfuck that is the Today Is The Day Axis Of Eden film, expects to release the film digitally and on DVD. More details are to come, but until then, check out the trailer here.

Unearthly Trance, Gnaw, Aderlating (side project of Gnaw Their Tongues), Rise of Because (mems Rosetta), and many more will be featured at the Apex Fest in NYC at Chasama Arts Center on 11/13 and 11/14. Dig on the flyer below and get your tickets here. The Gnaw show is one of a pair that the band has lined up, with a second going down at Europa on Dec 5th with Earthen Grave, Orodruin, and Hallux. Zoroaster has signed to E1 Music, and will enter the studio early next year to record their follow up to Voices of Saturn for a 2010 summer release! Look for Sanford Parker to take the helm.

there is WAY to much Metal on this site..

Posted by Hipster Doofus | November 3, 2009 1:19 PM

Are you aware that you can bypass articles you don't care to read? Not sure if you knew that. You appear not to since this METAL thing appears to vex you so.

That said, being a fan of all music and not just things my social status dictates I like, I always enjoy this metal summary and appreciate it greatly.

Posted by Brian | November 3, 2009 1:40 PM

There is definitely not too much metal on this site.

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 1:42 PM

This is a music site. Metal is a genre of music. End scene.

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 2:02 PM

i think they do a fair job of covering equal amounts of indie rock/dance/rap/folk/U2/bruce springsteen/doom/metal/HC/grind/whatever. why read the metal news if you dont like it? shouldnt u be out buying striped sweaters and neon sunglasses and shit? jeez. some people like headbang, some like to dance, some like to do drugs and do both. its what makes america great!

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 2:13 PM

integrity is still playing?
why not in new york?
another great post! thanks BBg!

METAL!!!!!!!

If there is too much metal on this site and BV decides to give BBG his own page, I would totally switch to that comment section. This one is...all the stereotypes posting.

TrustFunders, Hipsters, Hippies, Deadbeats, Bums, etc... If you don't like Metal don't listen.

I don;t listen to Vampire Weekend and I wish them all thesucess of the Beatles, well if they get that big , we are all in trouble.

ANYWAYS, thx BBG for "KEEPIN THE SCENE ALIVE!!!!!!"

There is not too much metal on this site.

BBG is one of the best, most thoroughly researched, and insightful music columns online. Within the subset of metal, it's likely in the top 2 or 3.

And considering that BBG manages to bring together ALL forms of metal and variations of it, including (but not limited to) thrash, death, grind, post, post-punk, art, instrumental, etc, this is an amazing summary that is actually saving BKLYNVGN space, and allows it to write more posts per day about folksy, quirky, trendy indie rock.

I wouldn't mind of BBG did a metal column each day of the week, each devoted to a different variant of the genre.

I wish I could only subscribe to the Week in Metal updates.

Also, I hope Gehenna makes an NY appearance. Definitely not going to Baltimore.

Wow, EHGod show on a boat looked nuts
Kinda glad I will see them in a Venue.

Also, love how the Bouncer tries to throw the Confederate flag shirt duder has away from him.
I WISH, he would have grabbed in and ripped it in half HULK HOGAN STYLE!!!!!!!!!!
Well done Security.

Its always some fat knucklehead metal guy who starts a fight because he takes a pit too seriously or something.
