HR of Bad Brains / security on stage during Bad Brains
Vice party
Vice party

"...At this point, Bad Brains were playing, and it was clear more trouble was in store, when some guy in some sort of medeival doungeon master getup tried to crowd surf during "Attitude," which inspired the security to storm the stage twelve or so deep, evacuate the Bad Brains, and stand like some sort of musclehead Stonehenge along the end of the stage, while their leader informed everyone, "This is not a concert, this is a party. Have a seat." Of course, the floor was covered in horrible grime and broken glass, but whatever.

Poor Bad Brains. Or is it? With all due respect to these legends of hardcore and reformed homophobes, I don't know if I can ever recall a more phoned-in performance in all my life. This should come as no surprise, based on the ubiquity of weed stench emenating from their dressing room, and the equally ever-present site of all-time-greatest-hardcore-singer front-runner HR sitting motionless on a couch (seriously - this hardcore legend did not move an inch during the whole evening!). I mean, whatever floats yr boat, HR, more power to you, but for this Greatest Hardcore Band Ever to get onstage and have their singer remain motionless in body and completely monotone in voice... I dunno, it is just not how I imagined it might be. Disappointing at best.

Well, this whole scene was fucked, clearly, and my ladyfriend was getting more and more disturbed by the assholery on display (or sexual harassment, as she would call it, and perhaps rightly so) and the constant picture-taking by stangers, that she had to go home and try and live like a reasonable person. I wish I could have followed her, but as will become a theme throughout this sad tale, I really needed the money. So, I escorted her out of the building and out of the hellish nightmare that was this party, and I was glad to see her moving towards a more peaceful and decent evening..." [Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus]

That is one small passage from a very long rant that Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus posted to his blog after an unpleasant experience at the Vice Halloween party on Saturday night. He goes on to talk about being kicked out of the show before getting to play, the Vice staff barely being able to get him back in, and him calling the cops!!! ("I made my second-ever call to 911"). Most of all he seems mad at the hired security company and encourages Vice to sue them.

He makes the whole night sound really horrible though - like really bad, which wasn't actually my own experience. I thought it was fun, though I wasn't kicked out. Security had a major presence, but what do you expect when you invite thousands of people to come drink for free in a giant warehouse in the middle of Williamsburg? My only discomfort was the bathroom lines. I almost peed my pants waiting for one of the porta potties!

Titus Andronicus performed as Weezer (a band that also played a Halloween show in NYC that night). They went on after Bad Brains (who played after Jesus Lizard) which was kind of weird because not that many people stuck around after the two headliners finished. Yes, HR of Bad Brains is a weirdo now and Bad Brains live are just kind of weird, but that's old news. Thanks to an enthusiastic crowd, the Bad Brains show was actually one of the craziest I can remember (security being weirdos for a minute aside). Read Patrick's whole rant HERE. More pictures from the show HERE. Watch some videos of the Bad Brains show, below...

(this one has bad sound, but gives u good idea of the place)

Pictures from the show are HERE.

I saw Bad Brains without HR in the early 90s. They kicked ass.

I saw bad Brains a couple of years ago with HR. They were God awful. He didnt even attempt to sing the songs. Just stood there with a towel on his head and hands in pocket mumbling like a tramp on a train.

Posted by Evan | November 2, 2009 10:13 AM

You need to read the rest of Patrick's description of his night. It explains a lot and asks a lot of good questions.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:15 AM

Why do they keep bringing HR back?
He is obviously not well

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:17 AM

really glad i decided not to head out there

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:20 AM

Yes, HR is a freak wandering around Williamsburg. Big deal ... and TA suck, and I've had a bad time every single time I've had to put up with their "music" when they shared a bill with bands I love. And he made a 911 call? What a douche. Call your bandmates to get you back in ...

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:24 AM

"and my ladyfriend was getting more and more disturbed by the assholery on display (or sexual harassment, as she would call it, and perhaps rightly so) and the constant picture-taking by stangers"

omg ppl r taking my picksher in my halloween costume. WAHHHBUMLANCE

what time does tramp on a train go on?

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:25 AM

This just in: Bad Brains dont put on a good show. Honestly, what do some people actually think?

Go see john joseph get conspiracy theory on your ass while playing cromags/badbrains covers

its MUCH better hah

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:26 AM

It's a hired security company doing their job. He acts like he's ranting against the government. Oh I forgot, he's young. Long live punk.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:29 AM

titus actually had a super fun set of weezer covers, fuck the meathead security guards.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:30 AM

really dude if you're saying you ARE the ppl you are complaining about and just as bad as them... well no that doesn't give you entitlement to complain... if the constant blogging and twittering and ruckus causing of our generation is so awful... then don't do it or be apart of, otherwise shut up. blogging is awful but i'm gonna blog about it, facebook is awful but i have a facebook, throwing beer bottles is so passay (but i've never thrown one in my life), oh the horror of the standard hipster attire but i'm gonna wear blue leggings. dude you sound asinine to me

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:31 AM

Anything Vice ever does sounds like a lemming party to me. If you're smart you figure out after a few months in NYC that there's usually a house party with no line going down, with a bunch of your friends in attendance. Guaranteed to be a much better time.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:37 AM

10:29
Grabbing someone by the neck and throwing them out for carrying a flag, not letting band members back in, etc., is not "security doing their job" it's security being assholes. You're allowed to get mad at that, old or young, punk or not.
And 10:31
Raising questions about something while being confused about one's place in it is legit. If your brain can't handle the notion that someone might have mixed feelings about something, or want to raise questions to get people thinking about it while not necessarily having the answers oneself, that's YOUR problem.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:39 AM

and really... dragging a flag on the floor around meet heads, aren't you kind of asking for trouble, let your friends see it get your kicks then drop that ish on the floor and have fun. jeez whats worst the awful ppl snorting and taking pictures and being the kids that beat you up in school, or being the asshole that proliferates it all and lets it ruin a perfectly good night of debauchery on a saturday halloween?

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:40 AM

Anyone that is complaining about Bad Brains at this point by way of comparison to their earlier 1980's heyday has ben out of the loop for a while, or had their head up their ass for ten years. Like mentioned...it's old news. If you've seen them play live at any point in the last ten years you know what to expect and you can enjoy them for what they are now... still a great freaking band. If you have no reference point on them beyond some old twenty five year old videos then you will be surprised by the show. Most of the people complaining have not seen them in the past decade and have not read any reviews or seen any footage of them live in that time, so their expectations cannot possible be met. Do a little research. You'll have a better time in the long run.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:40 AM

taking photos of your friends and drinking and having fun is unproductive, meaningless, and pathetic. ranting against it on your blogspot is punk rock and good your superior posterity.

hating the subculture you're apart of, damn, that's the ULTIMATE definition of hipster aint it?

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:41 AM

"If you're smart you figure out after a few months in NYC that there's usually a house party with no line going down, with a bunch of your friends in attendance."

Go back to Ohio

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:44 AM

Yep-- a night of too much testosterone and not enough port-a-potties. and fuck those security goons. i hope VICE does sue them. and I hope the other members of bad brains mercifully find HR some help. 'disappointment at best' is right.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:45 AM

how come none of the posts ive read anywhere about this show/party mention the jesus lizard at all? the note here that they went before bad brains is the most ive seen. were they a non issue? swallowed up by viceness? weird.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:46 AM

@ 10:39 never said it wasn't my problem. it is my problem, that ppl keep raising the same tired old question over and over again and just have to blog about it. word it ppls right to question their place in the scheme of things just wish ppl weren't so egotistical and felt that everyone had to see it, cuz for somereason you can't use a regular journal anymore or just ask your circle of friends.
i suppose internet just makes legit quesstions that most ppl seem to feel asked too many times and over analyzed. i just hate the whole thing of coomplaining about something your part of, more like self dicriminating rather than rasing questions that may need to be changed.

THE ENEMY IS EVERYWHERE

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:49 AM

was the dumbest spectacle ive ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:55 AM

If you were disappointed by Bad Brains, surprised by the lines to get in, annoyed by the macho security, and frustrated by the lack of bathrooms, then you haven't been in this City very long, or you don;t go out much.

Bad Brains have been like this for years now, there are major lines for anything of this scope, and security for events like this are always aggressive.

The complainers on here seem like a bunch of newbie kiddies that went out to a major in demand event on Halloween and suddenly found themselves in the real world in the big bad City where they don;t get everything they want instantly and weren't prepared for it.

What happened at the Vice Party wasn't anything new, and it was par for the course for this kind of event. Nothing that happened was out of the norm this kind of event. DO the math....Famous Hardcore band plus free drinks plus Saturday Night plus Halloween plus overbooked guest list plus hired security adds up to great big nightmare. Not a surprise. Get over yourselves. Anyone that's lived any kind of nightlife in this city for mire than a few seconds could have seem this coming and figured out how to have a good time with it or not.

Go back to Ohio and mommy and Daddy indeed.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:57 AM

forget about bad brains for a second here...The Jesus Lizard played a FUCKING AMAZING set that was over an hour long! That, coupled with unlimited free booze all night, was unbeatable by any standards.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:58 AM

WAHH WAHH Me and my friends didnt get right in the minute we arrived to drink for free for as long as we wanted and ignore some big name acts and then leave when we got bored. WAH WAH WHA Life's not fair. The security were mean. WAH WAH WAH. Let's sue somebody.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:00 AM

i'm wondering what douche-nozzle's girlfriend was wearing that she was being photographed. my guess is she was slutting it up big time, and is somehow surprised by the male attention...

also, titus is terrible.

vice sucks, but the party was fun.

bad brains was good.

people complain too much.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:05 AM

i think there just something to the way that our generation presents our ideas. we're so insecure that a flood of responses like above will come up that we automatically degrade ourselves and our opinions and things that we see are wrong that really are wrong. when you've been wronged don't go around and then pretty much blame yourself and they way you look and the culture you come from, cuz then you'll come off as a insecure senical complaining kid. but perhaps thats what you are and the above responses will make you see that and you'll change. suppose it feels nice that ppl are reading your thoughts that don't even know you and you get to rile up emotions in them

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:09 AM

The Jesus Lizard delivered the goods in full force. So much so that a terrible Bad Brains showing didnt make a difference.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:10 AM

Main difference between old and new Bad Brains, and the old and the new NYC is if this was Halloween 1982 and security was acting that way there would have been a riot in there. Today's youth are really lame.

Freaking BAD BRAINS are playing, security are acting like Aholes and interrupting the show, the venue is giving out GLASS bottles for free, everyone;s fucked up and the only people that are getting thrown out are getting tossed for having a flag?

What a bunch of whiny little scaredy cat over privileged snots you all are. Grow a pair and get kicked out for something important.

Bad Brains are playing, you've got a bottle of beer in your hand and security is stopping the show. What are you gonna do? Be all punk rock and shit and wave a flag? Wow, that's punk rock. HA HA

You got kicked out for being lame.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:11 AM

You should read his blog:
"With that, Eric, Liam and I went back to my apartment and watched "Trapped in the Closet Chapters 1-12" and felt all better, mostly."

Dude is such a pussy.
It's called NEW YORK CITY on HALLOWEEN - you are going to be harassed!

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:14 AM

whether the Jesus Lizard were great or sucked, no one really cares too much about them. However, whether Bad Brains are great or suck, they are newsworthy and noteworthy either way.

If you love Jesus Lizard and thought they were amazing, well that's great, its just that they really are not that big of a name with as much history and background as Bad Brains. If you thought Bad Brains sucked well at the very least you saw living legends for free which counts for something.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:15 AM

By the way, Bad Brains didn't suck they were good.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:17 AM

Patrick getting thrown out was ridiculous enough, but Ian getting tossed was completely absurd. Ian is a pretty mellow guy and he walked up to one of the security guys, explained calmly who he is (in a band, playing soon), and then points to Patrick (our lead singer, need him back in). Seriously, he was actually really calm and nice about it. The security guy responded by grabbing and pulling Ian's arm, and then 3 others security guys surrounded him and dragged him out beyond the barrier. It was absolutely the strangest overreaction you'll ever see.

All the while, there were literally people being dragged out by security at the rate of about 1 every ten seconds for who knows what imagined offense. It was just pure unbridled and nonsensical aggression.

Thankfully Ian responded by going across the street to the Vice offices, getting one of the editors and then getting escorted back into the show through the back entrance -- with another strange confrontation with security that Patrick described in the rest of his blog post.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:18 AM

It surprises me that people expected the bad brains to be good, especially at a vice party full of douche bags. I mean a vice party is basically everything they were against at one point as a band and now theyre doing it for the money and people are surprised that they stink.

who cares

Posted by brk | November 2, 2009 11:18 AM

Titus should just be grateful that they got to be a part of this thing and are still somehow relevant, in spite of the severe lack of talent that they ooze.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:18 AM

Everyone's mentioning Bad Brains and not Jesus Lizards because Bad Brains are much more important and famous and influencial than Jesus Lizard. Whoever was better is not the point. Bad Brains are a big deal.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:19 AM

BTW, does anybody have the TJL setlist? I am wondering how long they played.

And regarding the Bad Brains: yes HR is a freak nowadays, but you should be seeing them just to see Dr. Know play! He is still killer live. Darryl Jenifer is a great player, but he just stands there.

I saw the reunited Bad Brains at the CBGB shows and had a great time. If you ignored HR, you still got a kick ass show. All the fans (the ones willing to spend $40) were into it. The scensters at free shows are not fans.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:20 AM

I have no problem waiting for things. I've stood on many a line. What was fucked up about this particular line was that it appears to have been created by Vice Magazine for promotional purposes and could have been easily avoided by sending about 500 fewer 'guest list' emails the night of. That would have been nice, Vice. Also fucked up is the chorus of self-righteous assholes defending Vice policies. "It's a poorly managed clusterfuck by design and you're an idiot if you're not resigned to that. That's how it is here, I love NY, go away if you don't hate yourself." MEHsochists.

the Jesus Lizard >>>> bad brains

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:45 AM

Egads, this Patrick dude needs to get over himself and his lame issues with the party. It was rad, I had a blast, I'm a chick, I got in the pit during Jesus Lizard, and had no problems.

It's New York, and just because you're in some dirtbag band doesn't mean that you should be handled with kid gloves. Get behind the (non-existant) VIP ropes if you're too precious to hang with everyone else who had a good time.

And I agree with the above poster who said that dude's girlfriend had probs due to some dumbass slutty costume. Don't dress up as a slutty nurse, sexy kitty, bookish library nerd-slag or skeevy Courtney Love knockoff if you don't want to get pawed on by drunken meathead dudes-- duh.

Posted by abigail_applebottom | November 2, 2009 11:45 AM

Does anyone have a picture of Patrick's girlfriend? Now I'm curious...

Posted by blackhat | November 2, 2009 11:54 AM

party was decent but security behaved like teenage bullies auditioning to be prison guards. Way too serious guys! I had one of them pull my hair as a "please move" gesture since "please move" obviously would have been much too difficult a phrase for him to articulate. Does anyone know anything about the security company...who were these losers...thugs, gang members, somebody's cousins?

Posted by gina | November 2, 2009 11:55 AM

What's with the hate for Titus? They're great.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 12:02 PM

re: 11:55 comment

I will say, however, that the security company were a bit brusque and pushy at the party (but dude at the door DID let me in even tho I forgot my ID... thanks, guy!).

I can imagine that they'd probably psyched themselves up for a shitshow of an evening... if I was working a Vice event and was briefed on who typically attends, I'd expect something stupid to pop off at any moment.

But overall, as it wasn't a "open to the public" event (i.e. most people who attended probably knew someone in the Vice universe who got them the RSVP number or a pass, so you'd assume they wouldn't get too out of pocket), I think they avoided maybe 75% of the douchey behavior that could have come about.

Posted by abigail_applebottom | November 2, 2009 12:08 PM

"It's a poorly managed clusterfuck by design and you're an idiot if you're not resigned to that. That's how it is here, I love NY, go away if you don't hate yourself."

Actually, the fact that you didn't get in or had to wait a long time doesn't mean that it was poorly managed. There were zillions of drunken people there and everyone wanted in at the same time. Guess what? In the end no one got hurt. No pushing and shobving, no overcrowdedness. No fights, no one bleeding despite all the broken glass, no overdoses, no bad news. The show went on, all the bands scheduled played and finished and wrapped up according to plan. No one's parents had to get a call the next morning from the NYC Police that their 22 year old was trampled, etc. Sounds like it was actually pretty well managed to me.

Things that are not well managed lead to injury and/or unsafe conditions.

The people complaing that it was not managed well have luckily never been in an overcrowded unsafe environment.

Badly managed rock shows have famously ended in violence and/ or crowd conditions that result in people getting killed.

Yes, I waited quite a while to get in, but I waited patiently )unlike all the primadonnas who tried in vein to reason with security that they should not have to wait on line) and I eventually got in. Once inside there was plenty of room to move around safely and I had a good time.

All things considered (especially the temperature inside) I would have much rather been outside with that crowd then stuck inside with no where to move in a hundrred degree hot warehouse had something gone terribly wrong.

It's not badly managed just becuase you didn't get in when you wanted .

It's a warehouse, there's a hardcore band, people are drunk. It's a young crowd. It's Halloween. It's Sat night. It's NYC. Everyone walked away in one piece. Sounds like it worked out. Sounds like decent planning and execution to me.

I guarantee that if they just let everyone in at once and let anyone do anything that they wanted someone in there would have most certainly gotten hurt.

"It surprises me that people expected the bad brains to be good, especially at a vice party full of douche bags. I mean a vice party is basically everything they were against at one point as a band"

Like homosexuals?

"It's New York, and just because you're in some dirtbag band doesn't mean that you should be handled with kid gloves. Get behind the (non-existant) VIP ropes if you're too precious to hang with everyone else who had a good time."

That;s just a ridiculous comment. If your in a band that's playing the event, you need to be allowed in without a problem. Gimmee a break.

Last I heard, a performer at a performance should not have to wait with all the other attendees to get in. And that has nothing to do with the fact that this is New York. Same system everywhere. C'mon.

Silly post.

@11:43, yes, i am well over 15 y/o. oh, and i feel sooooo bad that you "are (sic) embarassed for me". did i refer to the police as PIGS.
so sorry. I meant to say 'new york's finest'. get the fuck out of here.
most, not all, cops are stupid no talent douches who can't do anything else so they become 'public servants'. they're into their little power trip enforcing the law as they see fit (when they can get away with it).

It's New York. It's a Holiday. You're in NYC at a party?

sooo..

You people are all fucking idiots.

re: 12:15 comment...

NO, I don't think it's written in stone that just because some dude is in a band, he gets VIP treatment. Ever been to a show where Bradford from Deerhunter/Atlas Sound or Tunde from TVoTR is in attendance? They notably wait in line with everyone else, no primadonna attitudes abounding.

And if you feel the need to leave a party where the guards are telling you there's NO RE-ENTRY and you're in a band, be smart enough to take or tell an employee of the company that you're leaving so you can get back in (and this is coming from a person who works in event production).

Prolly works better than whining and complaining (or making your second ever 911 call... how lame.)

Posted by abigail_applebottom | November 2, 2009 12:36 PM

Some of the comments on here are seriously disgusting. I hope the people who seem to think that somehow a girl being harassed is funny or that you in some way deserve that for something you wear, have something very unpleasant happy to them. That attitude is fucking sick. Reading this thread just makes me hate people, or hate the internet.. i'm not sure which.

Anyway, i feel sorry for Titus and patrick. They're a great band. It's just a shame other people are such assholes sometimes.

Posted by Yo Yo | November 2, 2009 12:51 PM

Um, if you dress like a slut, do you expect that men will not look at you? Isn't the point of going out with your naughty bits partially exposed to have them be seen? If it surprises or disgusts you that people will notice and gawk at your cameltoe, you need to not go out wearing a leotard stuffed up your kooch. (I don't know what the girl in question was wearing, I'm just going on what I did see girls wearing that night.)

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 1:02 PM

abigail_applebottom seems to be overlooking the fact that the band in question was playing the event and had the proper credentials to go in and out. especially considering the dressing rooms were across the street.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 1:25 PM

I know Patrick's girlfriend she was not dressed in any sort of revealing outfit at all. And 12:12 no one was hurt. Umm I have a friend who for stage diving was thrown down the stairs by security, busted his head open where they then opened the door and threw him on the street. He spent the night in the hospital. Also we are overlooking the fact that Children did not even get to play one song. cause they were assaulted by security right before they started to play.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 1:46 PM

I don't know if I believe in God, per se, but I definitely think there's some higher power at work, you know?

still can't figure out why having your picture taken is offensive. there's a big sign outside when you walk in. you're going to be filmed. shit happens. you're walking around with the douchebag lead singer of a pitchfork-approved no-talent opening act, you're going to end up in pictures. (in what universe does the opening act go on after the headliners, vice?)

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 2:33 PM

TJL and BB didn't want to play too late, so the order had to be reversed. Ideally would have been Children, Titus, TJL then BB. But that just wasn't possible due to time constraints.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 3:05 PM

anon @ 305, why dont you figure out the bill before you have the event???? if you are paying TJL and BB enough, they'll go on anytime you want

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 3:53 PM

The only thing badly planned about this event is that the band members and immediate Vice personnel should have been given a different form of wearable identification from everyone else. Most venues and parties that have headlining entertainment give out ALL ACCESS laminates and such for the talent to move around freely. The goons doing the door don;t know who anyone from any of these bands are. Just because you say you are in the band doesn;t mean anything if all you have is the same damn wristband that everyone else has who isn't in a band For all the security guy knows your just saying that to get in and not wait on line.

many many many aspects of this party were a trainwreck.

slowest moving line in recent NYC memory, and that was before they hit "capacity."

Dumbest, most cranked up security goons possible.

Slowest, chincy-est open bar ever.

Most phoned in legend reunion headliner money gig performance anyone has ever seen.

Generally the douchiest corporate sell out event imaginable, and incompetently managed across the board, to top it all off.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:08 PM

"It surprises me that people expected the bad brains to be good, especially at a vice party full of douche bags. I mean a vice party is basically everything they were against at one point as a band"

Like homosexuals?

hahaha

"Don't dress up as a slutty nurse, sexy kitty, bookish library nerd-slag or skeevy Courtney Love knockoff if you don't want to get pawed on by drunken meathead dudes-- duh"

You tell 'em sister (you claim to be a "chick"). If you don't want to be assaulted, don't dress up. If you didn't want to be raped, you shouldn't have had that drink! Why would you expect to be able to walk around with a vagina between your legs and not be groped and grabbed by anyone who wants to?

If you don't want to be raped, you should go back to Ohio, stop dressing up or being a woman! This is NYC stupid!

Posted by really? | November 2, 2009 4:12 PM

dear patrick,

move back to nj.

hugs,
nyc

Posted by wahmbulance | November 2, 2009 4:13 PM

4:13, just come out and admit that you are writign from the Vice office. Nobody else would possibly read this and not be on Pat's side here.

You guys mismanaged a free party with an excellent lineup into some hellish bummerfest.

Congrats! You suck!

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:18 PM

i think this guy pat lost everyones sympathy when he proceeded to call us all hipster trash. tx

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:28 PM

no shit HR doesn't move.. what is this your first carnival?

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:31 PM

Pat calls it like he sees it, and he's right.

Anyone who still follows Vice Magazine in 2009 is unequivocally hipster trash.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:36 PM

pot kettle black 4:36

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:39 PM

4:12,

I declare bullshit. The point is, if you dress in a way that would be expected to draw sexual attention to yourself, you should expect said attention when you go out in public. If your tits are hanging out, your ass is hanging out, and i can see the polka-dots on your thong, then you should expect that guys will take an extra glance to take it all in. No one is justifying rape, or assault of any kind. Just sayin, don't dress for attention and then claim indignation when you get attention.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:40 PM

ogling and groping aren't the same thing, 4:40.

they aren't even in the same universe

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:43 PM

"hipster trash" is a charitable description of the kind of 56th wave trend followers that wait in line for Vice's bullshit parties

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:45 PM

"Don't dress up as a slutty nurse, sexy kitty, bookish library nerd-slag or skeevy Courtney Love knockoff if you don't want to get pawed on by drunken meathead dudes-- duh"

@ 4:40 ^^^ is a direct quote lifted from "her" comment.

"She" (I don't think it's a woman) thinks that it's ok for a guy to "paw" on a woman if she's dressed provocatively. I just took that statement to the next logical conclusion.

If you don't like it, move back to Ohio, 'cause you're getting raped if you wear a skirt in NYC, and that's alright with "her".

Posted by really? | November 2, 2009 4:46 PM

let's state for the fucking record that women can dress any goddamn way they want, and no matter what they still get to decide for themselves who can touch their bodies. period.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:52 PM

@4:52

Maybe in Ohio, but this is NYC boy!

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:55 PM

yeah totally, in New York rape and assault are nonissues, as opposeed to "Ohio."

except that that's totally not true on any level.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 4:57 PM

Go back to Jersey!

love,
Ohio

Posted by brutus | November 2, 2009 5:03 PM

hahahaha so many folks enjoying Vice's epic fail here!

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 5:08 PM

"Most phoned in legend reunion headliner money gig performance anyone has ever seen."

Except for the hundreds of gigs this legendary headliner has performed since their reunion which have been pretty much the same. (A dozen or so just in the NYC area alone in only the past few years)

Where have you been?

Anybody who's with it knows that Bad Brains have been like this for a decade or so now. The fact that you are surprised that HR just stands there while the rest of the band pummels away shows you haven;t been around much.

Your expectations and subsequent disappointment show you don;t go out much.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 5:37 PM

nah, I go out plenty and am fully aware how lame Bad Brains reunions are.

But, I was enjoying listing all the facets by which your party sucked - and that was certainly up there!

The question is obvious, Mr. Vice: if you know it's common knowledge that Bad Brains has sucked for ten years, why did you spend a bunch of money booking them to play your party?

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 5:42 PM

5:37 here. I am not Mister Vice nor do I work for them so I don;t know why they booked them, but I'm glad they did. I thought they were perfect for a free Halloween show in a Brooklyn warehouse. Kudos for their booking policy.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 6:30 PM

THere were tons of people having a really crazy raucous time during Bad Brains set, so that doesn't seem to me to be a sucky situation by a band that sucked. Looked like a great punk set that people were really into.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 6:31 PM

When security stops a show after only a handful of songs because the corwd is going over the top wild and is really into it, then the show don;t suck.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 6:33 PM

make up you minds how you want to defend yourselves, Vice office! you keep changing your tune.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 6:45 PM

the show can suck if the security sucks to a certain point. you guys crossed that line, among several other epically crappy factors that went into that Vice shitshow Saturday.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 6:47 PM

Crowd was not over the top. Security freaked out over nothing and were overly aggressive..."this is a party not a show." Give me a break.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 6:47 PM

I'm having Bad Brains play my birthday party next week. If someone tries to stage dive into my relatives, I'm going to grab the mic and shout "This is a party not a concert"

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 7:36 PM

The only potentially stupid and irresponsible thing that Vice did at this party was to book Bad Brains and give out glass bottles. Luckily no one got hurt and no bottles were thrown, But that could have been a disaster.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 7:38 PM

Whomever keeps putting in "Go back to Ohio," obviously has never been there; or is clueless to the fact that most influential bands/artists/filmmakers of the last 30 years came from the midwest. Ooh, where are you from, New Jersey? Maybe Florida? Whatever. Since Williamsburg hipsters started wearing trucker hats like they were from Indiana, it's all a moot point. Since when hasn't NYC been a place for transplants.? Most famous bands in NYC's history came from other places...

Posted by Eric | November 2, 2009 9:07 PM

i audio recorded the show and bad brains sound great.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 9:42 PM

if you can remember anything that happened at vice on halloween, you were not actually there.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 9:49 PM

when bb started playing there was no security at the stage. security showed up 2 songs in when the crowd pushed the bicycle fences to the stage. security stopped bb in the middle of a song and physically pushed the fences and crowd back. bb never left the stage. bb started playing again and the crowd surged. security man-handled a couple of kids and a couple of songs later, security disappeared.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:05 PM

I saw Bad Brains last year fully knowing what to expect from HR which was nothing. Well, he gave me something and it turned into a halfway decent show thanks to the rest of the band who were great. Of course, I would never pay another dime to see them again but hey, I can at least say I heard those songs being played.

Oh yeah, and hiring security that's probably never handled a show with bands like Bad Brains and the Jesus Lizard (see "this is a party not a concert") is probably not the smartest idea in the world. Blame the VICE douchebags who didn't see this coming a mile away.

Posted by IanM | November 2, 2009 10:21 PM

If anybody commenting here who is defending or trying to mitigate the actions of security at this event ever gets man-handled and thrown out of a place they feel they belong in by irrational security people who just won't listen to you when you try to explain yourself, or by cops, or by anyone else in that kind of position of authority, real or imagined, you will feel differently, I guarantee it.
And I hope you'll re-join us all here to apologize for your lack of empathy.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:26 PM

vice you completely failed, no one is talking about your party

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:29 PM

November 2, 2009 12:25 PM : 1) There was no reason to add "sic" to your quote of my post, as it was written in proper English.
2)I have no love for power-hungry cops at all, but the use of the word "pigs" comes across as something a 15 y/o in the 70's might have said. Again, if you are not that age, I am embarassed for you. Also, you shouldn't care if I am embarassed for you, you should feel embarassed that you are making an ass of yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 10:42 PM

sluttily attired bitches getting groped, 'musicians' high on coke, cro-mag security manhandling 'party-goers, shitty bands, indignant moron hipsters, douchebag VICE 'event' (lol) promoters,
hot, smelly williamsburg warehouse--- sounds all you lowlife Skanks deserve one another!!

LMFAO

Posted by Skankburg | November 2, 2009 10:59 PM

i snuck in and sucker punched one of those guido security guards in the dark hallway after he messed with one of my friends.

Posted by vice-versa | November 2, 2009 11:24 PM

Ah Vice, continuing to polarize people. They are fucking masters at this game. Fun parties that are hard to get into and are free. No wonder people want to go.

If people had to actually pay for this bullshit, then no way this would fly.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:50 PM

Here's the deal, kids: I saw Mr. P Stickles and (who I think was) his girlfriend at the Japandroids show during CMJ week and they were basically rocking out, paying attention, having a good time, and being true music fans. They weren't concerned about being there to be cool (if that might be what some construe about such a thing) or alternately that they might not be cool (some of the snobbier Brooklyn hipsters probably wouldn't set foot in a big official venue like that)--they were seemingly into watching the band, and not talking or in any way there for some bullshit reason, and I walked away from it thinking: those people are great. I don't see enough people in relatively popular bands just nerding out over something that they enjoy. He seems like a genuine, well-intentioned person who cares about what is important, whereas one can imagine a lot of the Vice crowd lack any real priorities about such things.

Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2009 11:50 PM

ive seen titus play Vice parties before and they have always been great

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 12:51 AM

10:29, yeah, talking about how much it sucked!

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 8:03 AM

Vice parties man, never a good time.

Getting and spending a big wad of corporate sponsorship cash doesn't make your party awesome. Being able to afford to buy a couple big old timer names to play isn't especially impressive either.

Anyone with the same cash could get the same bands to play, and presumably they might also sink a little budget into hiring above-moron level security and door people.

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 8:22 AM

11:50 Woa, you saw him enjoying a show? wow you're right, that is way beyond any hipster type. Moron.

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 9:57 AM

as long you spell their name right dumbasses, keep talking about it and you play their game.
how much do you think titus got for selling out and letting their chicks get groped?

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 10:03 AM

8:22AM

"Being able to afford to buy a couple big old timer names to play isn't especially impressive either"

Wasn't that the point of the party though?

"Anyone with the same cash could get the same bands to play"

I agree, let's do it! Yes we can!

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 10:54 AM

@11:50
how in the world is that the deal? how in the world does that relate to any of this? or did you just want to state that you had a "star" and (maybe) his girlfriend sighting... so confused. there's nothing to debate he's not cool and he as lame as the ppl he calls "shit" on he already devulged that in his blog. didn't you read it?

"wah wah wah, ppl took pictures of me and my ladyfriend (?!) wah wah wah that's because i'm part of an awful culture and i"m lame and the bouncers could tell this so they beat me up. so i ironically watched trapped in the closet cuz r kelly is so legit."

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 11:05 AM

Haha yes!

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2009 6:52 PM

you guys are such FUCKING assholes it's absolutely incredible

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2009 4:25 AM
