the Pixies were incredible. "Doolittle" plus B-sides, much more Joey Santiago than in the studio versions--if you like the songs but you're iffy about the smooth production, it was a total rediscovery.

Pixies intro began at exactly 9, although they didn't actually start playing until 9:07. They were done by 10:28.

yawn..

first the "Chien Andalou" film, then "Manta Ray" and a couple other B-sides Kim said were so obsure they had to learn how to play them. Then Doolittle, and a couple more B-sides, including an unbelievable "Into The White." For the second enfore they did some oldies, like "Vamos" and "Where Is My Mind."

The guitar sound, the drums and vocals were much more raw and direct than they were on the album, so something like "I Bleed" becomes totally new and punk, and "Hey" becomes a full-on rock ballad that makes the studio version seem like a sketch. They all seemed to be in a cheery mood too, giving it up to Dave when it was time to sing "La La Love You." An intense, revisionary-minded show.

The Hammerstein bartenders have been pronounced dead since 2002, when they all caught consumption from the Belle & Sebastian show. Best to do your own drinking before the show, or pack a well-hid flask stashed in your butt cheeks. R.I.P.
