Bike Clowns

"The controversy--removing, repainting, arrests, etc.--over a 14-block stretch of the Bedford Avenue bike lane has reached the absurd heights we've been hoping for: The clowns are coming. The Bike Clowns, that is, the nattily attired brigade of bike lane defenders that really hates it when you mess with their preferred mode of transport. According to a press release, the clowns will have a "New Orleans-style funeral procession followed by a vigil" on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the missing bike lane. Given the hubbub over the Hipsters vs. Hasids bike battle in South Williamsburg, expect many a camera." [Curbed]

i think the hasidim were wrong here but once again, the hipsters really make you loathe them regardless.

i remember that story about 7-8 years ago, the cops pulled over this local elder for talking on his cell phone. they sort of harassed him and the local men came out and told the cops to leave. they said it was their neighborhood and they don't cause any trouble...the cops were surrounded and left.

i respect that. this is their community...don't fuck with that.

the cops were surrounded and left? are you sure? im surprised they didnt call in a swat team. that's the nypd thing to do.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 11:04 AM

Would be awesome to see a few Taxi's sideswipe these clowns....

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 11:19 AM

nothing quite as satisfying as watching a clown get sideswiped, except maybe a mime

So 10:58, mob rule in a ghetto is ok?
(and before you knock my use of the word ghetto, look it up in the dictionary. I am not referring to current slang use of the word).

Sing "Pag-LEE-ah-CHE" clown!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 11:29 AM

11:24...i grew up in brooklyn and always drove through bedford ave to go to peter lugers with my grandpa. these people have lived here for ages. there is next to no crime despite being surrounded by shitty neighborhoods. they take care of each other, they keep the place clean and theyve been doing this for over 100 years.

i personally have no issue with them controlling their own area. obviously if there was a domestic abuse situation (and im sure there are) or a murder, the rule of law is totally appropriate and should come down on them but for minor infractions, i think they are entitled to control each other...theyve earned it.

DO they have bike lanes in Ohio??????

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 11:42 AM

Those crazy kids from Ohio....Or, is it Nebraska?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 11:50 AM

PLEASE GO BACK TO OHIO - PLEASE!

ON THE OTHER HAND, TELL DEFIANCE OHIO TO TOUR MORE

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:17 PM

its a city people. I think its rediculous that the hasids are restricting BIKE lanes. They need to chill out and smoke some hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:19 PM

Let them eat bikes.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:25 PM

People who live in a neighborhood, don't in fact own the neighborhood. If the Hasidim can be said to own their neighborhood and should be free of police intervention, then can the same be said for African Americans living Bedford-Stuyvesant? No, it cannot be. Just because they are Jewish and ethnically dominant in this slice of Brooklyn does not grant them any greater privilege. In practice, however this is not the case. They are in fact given a pass.

anon 11:36 you say "you have no problem them controlling their own area" well I have about 12 friends living on my short block and we have started thinking about controlling OUR area, and these are the initiatives:
-no overweight girls in ug boots.
-no cars allowed blasting any form of beyonce.
-no speaking of animal collective being best album of 2009
-no hummus kitchens open past 2:00am
-no skateboarders busting weak attempts at kick-flips.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:42 PM

-no hummus kitchens open past 2:00am

How dare you!

I don't know where you live but I'd love to volunteer, neighborhood watch, or something.
Anything to get those girls out of them ughs!

People who live in a community DO own the neighborhood. They vote on local officials who (in theory) create laws that work for those neighborhoods. We, the voters, own our country.

Anyway, that being said, politicians do take that sort of thing into account. They make a bike lane because they see a greater bike riding constituency, but then take it away when another group of voters protest.

Here's the thing. If a good number of bike riders live in the neighborhood, then the bike lanes should stay. If people are just using the bike lanes to get THROUGH the neighborhood, then yes, the local representative will probably want them painted over.

A higher ranking elected official could see a greater good in bike lanes to get through a neighborhood with few bike riders..

It all makes sense to me.

i'm tired of this subject. can we go back to hating all forms of music?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 1:03 PM

I like this subject. Can we stay on this topic instead?

Where were all you guys last night?

Only 7 more nights of shows to come together and rebuild the temple. Err...squash this beef.

Posted by Matisyahu | December 10, 2009 1:16 PM

12:55 is completely correct...they do own the neighborhood. the hasidic area of williamsburg is sort of the perfect example of what happens when one group of ethnic people settle in one area. as i said before, they keep it clean, you can walk through that area at 3am and no one will bother you, they have their own security, they vote for their representatives that actively take care of their issues.

regarding bed stuy, the 'ethnic' group who have settled there havent shown any ability to keep their area safe from themselves, tend to break all sorts of laws, have unclean streets, and if they do vote, they tend to vote for representatives that just cater to their personal interests rather than the needs of their constituents. and they keep voting for these same representatives because they don't know any better.

its really night and day.

im not saying this is perfect and i really do believe in the rule of law but the hasidic area is really something unique and i think they are entitled to do what they do.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 1:22 PM

personally I would have no problem redirecting those bike lanes into my neighborhood...
I support scantilly clad hipster chiks in booty shorts and pumps riding their busted schwinns past my stoop as I sip 40s of malt!

Right, because blacks in Bed-Stuy are animals and Jews are supreme beings. Just look at their respective neighborhoods and this is plainly so. This is just the sort of argument throughout the years that has helped deny African Americans the vote, employment, education, and protection AGAINST law enforcement.

Posted by NIGHTGOAT | December 10, 2009 1:58 PM

how the fuck are you supposed to get anywhere (via bike, train or car) without going through someone else's neighborhood? that's what they want.

i mean, i don't wanna look at the brooklyn fashion victims when they ride down my street, so i don't.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 2:01 PM

americans will complain and bitch about anything. it's a fucking bike lane!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 2:18 PM

1:58...i know you probably don't believe in a concept called personal responsibility for one's actions and blame everything on everyone else but please feel free to share with me why bed stuy is such a great place to live and what the community has done to bring about a good quality of life for its people?

im not saying the hasidic community doesnt have to follow the law like everyone else. i just think they are an interesting and special community that sort of shows what could happen when people have the same interests and live together to promote that.

5:24 "get my ass kicked [by] hasidic jews? doubtful."

Clearly dude does not know what JDL is.

Also, not having a bike lane on a street does not make it illegal to ride on that street, so whatever kind of pointless actually.

And as for cyclists disobeying traffics laws, as mentioned in the earlier post, hasids jaywalk all over Bedford ave. Unless I make the trip up Bedford in the middle of the night, I always expect there to be hasids using the bike lane as extra sidewalk anyway.
