Bike Lane BanditS

Groups of bicycle-riding vigilantes have been repainting 14 blocks of Williamsburg roadways ever since the city sandblasted their bike lanes away last week at the request of the Hasidic community.

The Hasids, who have long had a huge enclave in the now-artist-haven neighborhood, had complained that the Bedford Avenue bike paths posed both a safety and religious hazard.

Scantily clad hipster cyclists attracted to the Brooklyn neighborhood made it difficult, the Hasids said, to obey religious laws forbidding them from staring at members of the opposite sex in various states of undress. These riders also were disobeying the traffic laws, they complained. [NY Post]

I hope the community continues fighting to put back the bike lanes. I'm an orthodox jew and the Hasidic communities position is not only unfair, but theologically and philosophically unsound.

Cute how last weekend a Hasid stopped into Death By Audio to hit on a girl rather pathetically before leaving very soon. She was sort of hip there orthodox guy who was probably married also.
The hasids also like to visit prostitutes in other parts of Brooklyn some nurses blogs mention because they stop in with their new STD's to get checked out to bring home to traditional wife.

My boyfriend is a Hasid and he bikes regularly from Bedford to my apartment in Crown Heights. He tells me all the time about how much shit he gets from everyone for (a) biking and (b) his stance on this whole issue. This really is about safety in the long run.

So much for secularism...

this is great, wish i could send them some paint.

Posted by brian | December 9, 2009 8:38 AM

I am Jewish and I think the position of the Hasidic sect on this occasion (and others) is BS. You are part of a greater society....deal with it or leave!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 8:58 AM

good for them. the bike lanes are great!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 9:10 AM

as a bike rider here in brooklyn i am all for bike lanes. what i hate is when cars are parked in the bike lane. that's frustrating.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 9:12 AM

Separation of church and state. Thank you that is all.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 9:14 AM

This thread is so full of antisemitism it is sickening. The Jews didn't survive the Holocaust only to have to endure hipsters on fixies 70 years later.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 9:33 AM

They are right about one thing...violating traffic laws. I cannot stand how bicyclists in Williamsburg think that one way road signs do not apply to them.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 9:44 AM

why do they have those goofy haircuts?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 9:48 AM

This vandalism is highly dangerous and highly illegal, and it's just as illegal to film it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:00 AM

yeah what ^ with the hair cutz?

Posted by michaelS | December 9, 2009 10:03 AM

bicyclists think traffic rules don't apply to them, even though they can hit pedestrians or get into accidents just like cars can. They run red lights. They go the wrong way on one way streets. Anything that takes bicyclists off the streets is actually making the streets safer for people.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:06 AM

separation of church and state is the ONLY issue here. nobody's religious beliefs are any reason to change the traffic laws on a public street.

bicyclists suck btw, and they should definitely should be licensed and registered, like any other operators of a motor vehicle, and learn to drive in traffic, like any other operators of a motor vehicle. but that's a whole other issue.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:18 AM

You do all know that the DOT acknowledges that they overwhelmingly install bikelanes NOT for safety, but as traffic calming measures in areas in which high speeds cause accidents frequently.

I point to the recent proposal for Gerristen Ave. In Sheepshead Bay... they retracted them after the community leaders enthusiastically hated on the idea.

Posted by Yehuda | December 9, 2009 10:18 AM

"NOT for safety, but as traffic calming measures in areas in which high speeds cause accidents frequently"

accidents and safety would seem to be related.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:28 AM

please don't tell me that anybody on here seriously believes that bike lanes make it safer to ride bikes. stop kidding yourself. nobody in a car respects these bike lanes, not even the cops. stop riding like tools and be cautious. that's the only thing that will save your ass.

as for repainting the bike lanes. all kudos to you, who ever you are. it's not like it makes a difference whether or not these lanes are there, but it is a great act of civil disobedience by people who do not have a powerful political muscle, unlike certain organized religions.

9:33 your comment leaves me speechless. tying the holocaust into this neighborhood game of "cat and mouse", of "political muscle" vs "do it yourself disobedience" surely requires the mind of a GREAT thinker.

Can you tell me where the motor is on a bicycle? Here I've just been pedaling this whole time....

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:52 AM

I attached a motor to my bicycle. Hasids can't touch dis.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:56 AM

Scantily clad hipster cyclists attracted to the Brooklyn neighborhood made it difficult, the Hasids said, to obey religious laws forbidding them from staring at members of the opposite sex in various states of undress.

Nobody finds this rediculous?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:57 AM

its funny how they ask scantily clad hipster cyclists to stop and turn off their car lights they left on or stove they left on

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 11:01 AM

Ah, blame the goyem for lack of self control.
Fundamentalist Christians, Mormons, Right Wing Catholics,
Orthodox Jews, Hasids, Lubovitchers, etc..., all want to legislate morality for the rest of us, while they creep around in the seemy underbelly of porn, sexual abuse, etc... They don't want it to be legal, because then they might get caught while visiting the local madam or gay bar. It is hypocrisy pure and simple.
The religious reasoning is flawed and just plain silly.
We are living in the 21st century. Come on and join us. It's not so bad. Instead of lurking, jump in and be happy.

Posted by Fortyver | December 9, 2009 11:08 AM

if the statement about the scantily clad bikers making it hard not to look at them is true then its ridiculous. Its from the NY post though so who knows. I doubt its true. If it is true though, I imagine they must have the same problem with joggers.

there's a hisidic jew that i always run into during the summers of williamsburg my two favourite occasions:
1)after the mgmt show at mccarren "is this where the mgmt party is?'
2)after the Health show in MHow for after the jump "is this where the party at?!"

had no idea that they had so many restrictions, i just gathered they really liked to party

I don't go to BK very often, but I was at some perogie place that was turned into a bar. (The name escapes me right now) And a hasidic came in alone. Bought a few Budweisers, and proceded to get down. And by get down, I mean this guy was dancing like nobody was watching. Although we were. We were all watching.

"is it true that hasids show up to a lot of the hipster parties/bars and generally act pervy and awkward? my friend told me this but i wasnt sure if i believed him"

yes it is true. It's true that repressed fundamentalists of all religions show up at all kinds of places and act "pervy". Fundamentalists of any religion should be avoided at all costs. Hasids are creepy and pervy... but compared to catholic Priests!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 11:56 AM

Why is NYC taking away a bike lane that makes a lot of sense & is very safe away for Jews in funny haircuts & hats but not a hazardous bike lane on Grand Street where emergency vehicles cant get through in a timely fashion???????????????

Cars should have been banned in Manhattan 80 years ago. A bicycle IS legally considered a motor vehicle despite having no motor. Try going to the ladies-only swim at the Grand St. pool. Great photo opp of hasid women with flowing black garb in the pool together.

Can someone, once and for all, tell me how you're supposed to stop on these "fixies"? And what is the allure of having no brakes?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 12:42 PM

this is a violation of separation of church and state. if it was a physical safety issue to pedestrians and motorists they may have had a chance. im surprised bloomberg and the DOT caved to the orthodox community.

my question is can i ride down beford still?
if im accosted by the 'neghborhood watch' im not gonna tolerate it. this is america.

ok my post is a lil boring... i did hear that the men were masturbating on the street and thats why the rabbis freaked out.

god bless us all

Posted by the truth | December 9, 2009 12:56 PM

12:42, To stop on fixies, you just don't pedal. I hate fixies because you can't cruise; you have to pedal continuously.

Re: Being unable to stare at scantily clad members of the opposite sex -- Close your eyes.

I can't make generalizations about the Hasidic community, but I'll share this anectdote: once I was in Williamsburg with my girl friend and a Hasidic Jewish man comes up to us, asking, in a kinda creepy tone, if we knew of any "massage" places nearby. (We are both Asian by the way.)

Until the bike lane is put back, we should pursue a two tiered strategy of litigation and regularly sending scantily clad bikers through the neighborhood. There is a NY court ruling allowing women to go topless in public.

"is it true that hasids show up to a lot of the hipster parties/bars and generally act pervy and awkward? my friend told me this but i wasnt sure if i believed him"

yes...threw a party at glasslands. 2 hasids showed up acting weird and inappropriate towards everyone...it was a booty party so the dancing was pretty raunchy, and the dudes were gettin up in it and freaking everyone out....then later than night the staff were pissed at us cause the bathrooms were VIOLENTLY trashed...broken mirrors, flooding, and such....and they accused our friends. when i brought to their attention that there were 2 young hasids acting very weird and out of place, the staff shunned the accusation off, like there was some political issue for them with these dudes (sons of the landlord?)....very weird.

what gets me about all this bike lane issue is that the hasidics own most of williamsburg, bedstuy, crown heights, and bk for that matter, jack the rent and rent the apts to hipsters, then have a problem when their "tennants" have to get from point A to B.....

antisemitism my ass. i feel bad for jewish people having to b clumped with these ass backwards people. its not a jewish issue, its an issue of extremists that is permeating every major issue in the world right now.

Since when do I need a bike lane to drive through 1870s Vilnius? People rode bikes through the shtetl before the bike lanes and they will continue to do so because Bedford Ave happens to rather perfectly connect North Brooklyn to South Brooklyn and to the various arteries leading to the bridges to Manhattan. Incidentally, one of the things that gives Brooklyn its character are its quaint ethnic enclaves; on the other hand, I suppse the same could have been said about the Balkans. Bottom line: This is America, people can live wherever they want, there is no "right" to a homogenous community, and if these Brooklyn Taliban don't like other New Yorkers biking through their neighborhood then they need to move because it's a free country. They're free to dress as they wish and practice their religion as they wish, but they are not free to impose their religious viewpoints on the public space.

Frankly speaking, I don't see what difference it makes. I bicycled up Bedford all my life! Before they painted bike lanes and do it now, moreover will continue to do till the day I die whether or not there are bike lanes. It seems to me, no one pays much attention to them anyway.Several days ago, riding to Battery Park City, I counted 27 vehicles parked in bike lanes on my route. Yes, it's little bit above normal but not that astonishing, don't you think so???
