"The menu here read like a map of the zoo." - Yelp Reviewer

Duck Monkey

"One of the most intriguing restaurants and performances spaces in New York will close next month: RIP Monkey Town, a multi-room destination for adventurous food, performance art, music, and video. Owner Montgomery Knott tells Brooklyn Based that "due to landlord issues" the space will close on January 24th." [Gothamist]
This news is bittersweet. As much as I think the venue does great and creative things with and for artists, I won't be sad to see one less establishment in this city that thinks its ok to serve foie gras.

dipshit

AGREED WITH YOU THERE BV <3

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 4:50 PM

but i don't get the foie gras thing. so you don't eat cow but tolerate cow eating establishments but foie gras isn't okay. if you think meat is murder, isn't it always murder? and isn't murder, you know, murder?

"i don't like people murdering old ladies, but that's acceptable as long as they're not murdering school children"

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:01 PM

MURTHER

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:02 PM

"if you think meat is murder, isn't it always murder? and isn't murder, you know, murder?"

1) realistic steps
2) foie gras = crueler than usual and completely unnecessary

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:03 PM

seriously, just don't eat.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:05 PM

Jesus Christ, I had no idea foie gras was made like that. I'm pretty cold about shit like that normally, but that is well beyond the realm of decency, even for someone like myself that's pretty thrilled being carniverous.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:08 PM

foie gras is exceptionally brutal

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:14 PM

Agreed onthe foie gras but god thats a great venue.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:23 PM

i work for a film distributor, and have had problems over the years with monkeytown hosting public screenings of (and charging admission for) films they have not legally licensed. i, for one, will shed no tears for the shuttering of a dishonest venture.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:44 PM

sounds like "monkey business"

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 5:55 PM

I only eat the meat. No internal organs please. Disgusting.

Posted by dee | December 18, 2009 5:57 PM

id kill for some meat

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 6:09 PM

fuck you brooklynvegan, monkeytown was awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 6:37 PM

wait, seriously, you take the closing of an awesome venue and turn it into a vegan rant? c'mon...

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 6:44 PM

foi gras is not as evil as it sounds. those animals are probably treated better than most any on a factory farm. Peta heads don't like cause rich fancy pants people eat it... and that inherently makes it more evil.

Brooklyn venue Manhattan closing

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 7:07 PM

they should have just had hummus on the Menu.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 7:25 PM

There are only two suppliers of Foie Gras in the US. Hudson Valley is the east-coast supplier. Please visit them, as they are only a 30min drive from NYC. The treatment of the ducks is better than mythologized

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 7:58 PM

i like foie gras stuffed with hummus

It's great to finally see a vegan post up here, BV! Keep up the good message.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2009 9:12 PM

Good Riddance! The people who ran it were assholes and did not pay the artists licensing fee when showing some films.

why the fuck would you even come to this site then, you fucking dipshit? VEGAN is right in the name. you have no right to criticize anything posted.

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 1:06 AM

Oh god, seriously

Posted by MP4 Converter | December 19, 2009 1:09 AM

jeez, people have beliefs, i don't think it's fucking going to far to say Foie Gras is cruel. If you don't want to construct a decent response then what are you saying.

"doesn't conform to my elitist and boho dietary standards." elitist? really? because someone doesn't endorse force feeeding a fucking duck until it's liver becomes unaturally enlarged?

monkey town was notorious for it's poor treatment of artists and patrons. montgomery is a complete dickbag and the sooner he drags his sorry ass off the block the better.

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 9:38 AM

dickbag = Rage against the Machine

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 10:24 AM

I like foie gras.

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 10:54 AM

I've never heard the term "dickbag" before.
I dont get it...

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 11:07 AM

ask your mom

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 11:19 AM

are you saying my mom is a dickbag?

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 1:43 PM

This is one of the the most spectacularly inane things I have read in a long time. All I wanted was to know why Monkeytown was closing and if it might be opening somewhere else, and instead I find people calling each other assholes, dickbags, and slurring each other's moms over things that have nothing to do with the main reason people visit this site, which is music.

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 2:15 PM

you're right, 2:15pm.
the point if monkey town is/was an AWFUL venue and i think that there are a high number of brooklyn residents and artists, myself included, who will excitedly bid them adieu.
regards

Sure are a lot of "artists" around these days. All living in Williamsburg too, the only place pretentious enough to have a crappy venue serving pretentious food.

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 3:09 PM

so now brooklyn vegan himself has become the target of the bitter, hateful commenters that he himself created (by encouraging people to post ugly comments by letting people post anonymously and not removing offensive comments). It's like the indie music blog version of Frankenstein.

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 4:39 PM

foie MEH

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 4:42 PM

the site is called Brooklyn Vegan and the overtone of showing respect to animals adds a nice dimension to the music and pitchfork bashing.

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 5:31 PM

bad news for football fans, as the back room of this place was the best place in the city to watch the World Cup.

Posted by jim | December 19, 2009 5:31 PM

artists BAHAHA

Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2009 5:42 PM

Last night I had a dream that Bradford Cox pooped on my tits... and I liked it. Is that weird?

Posted by Just wonderin | December 19, 2009 6:09 PM

Hey BV, animals will always be killed and you will never win, so get used to it and enjoy life on top of the food chain you pussy.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 1:03 AM

wait, this place is called brooklyn vegan? All this time I just thought it was an informative music site with a ridiculously stupid name. I didn't know it was actually an anti delicious food website.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 1:12 AM

anon 3:09-it would be pretentious food if it was gilded in gold, but on it's own, foie gras is simply a delicious delicacy.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 1:19 AM

@ 6:09:

yes. bradford cox does not produce poop.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 2:13 AM

Meat eaters have brain cell issues.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 4:53 AM

foie gras is a particularly cruel food, which is why CA and other places has outlawed serving it. Monkey town is an awesome venue and its owner is very upright and forward thinking about music. They have been very supportive to the musical community here.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 11:39 AM

Foei gras is not even on their menu right now!

Monkeytown was a unique and special venue and there is nothing else like it anywhere around here. Big time loss.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 1:07 PM

monkeytown should have closed down a long time ago.
