Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective

NPR and Stereogum both posted results of listener/reader polls. At Stereogum the contest is known as the Gummy Awards (an annual event). NPR titles it, "All Songs Considered Listeners Pick The Best Music Of 2009". Both lists rank "Best Album of 2009". Both ended up with Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective in the top two spots, but AC took #1 at Stereogum while GB triumphed at NPR. Both lists below...

this list is fuglier than our faces

camera obscura is a little too low on both of those lists. should be in top 5, at least.

YEAHHHH GRIZZLY BEARRRRR

Posted by imkoreansowhat | December 10, 2009 12:05 PM

they are both great albums, i am sick of this band versus that band anymore, sort of gets on me nerves

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:05 PM

no flaming lips on npr's list? shame on them.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:12 PM

Real Estate? Fuck Buttons? Memory Tapes?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:12 PM

Everything is so tasteful.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:16 PM

Both lists are basically the same yupster stuff. It looks like Pitchfork is going to be the only one this year to really go apeshit over Dirty Projectors, becuase thus far everyone else has put them nowhere near the top 10. I agree with 12:12pm, though, especially Fuck Buttons.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:17 PM

I stand corrected: Stereogum readers did put DP at 3.

"03. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca [Domino]"

well Time magazine placed Dirty Projectors high and completed neglected MPP (which is WAY overrated)

Veckatimest still made time's top 10 deservedly so

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:26 PM

Noble beast album of the yearrrr

Placed way to well:
Monsters of Folk
Neko Case
Bon Iver
M. Ward
Regina Spektor
Beirut

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 12:30 PM

how does bon iver's four-song EP even come up for consideration for "album"?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 1:05 PM

How does the Obits album fail to make the list?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 1:07 PM

Dinosaur Jr. - Farm

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 1:16 PM

Iron Maiden Flight 666

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 1:28 PM

First I feign surprise that my top choices - Metric, Camera - make the lists then I get bent out of shape over the dullness of the top choices. I can't satisfy myself.

The thing I don't get is - Stereogum is a very Kent and Third Hipster rag. NPR Music is a shabby coffee-drinking professor-type source. How do they both have the same top choices?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 1:32 PM

Grand Archives - Keep in Mind Frankenstein.

Posted by donn | December 10, 2009 1:50 PM

the newest Meat Puppets is really underrated. also where's the new Built to Spill at on these lists?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 2:16 PM

pitchfork is going to name mt. eerie as their top album of the year, people

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 2:39 PM

Predictable that two MOR albums get named best. But then again these are polls, and both of those albums blow.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 2:46 PM

People seldom remember The Banana Splits were an animal collective.

Blacroc – Eponymous
Blk Jks - Mystery
Tortoise - Beacons of Ancetorship

How on earth did the Handsome Pheasants not make either list?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 3:26 PM

2:46 is a real tough guy.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 3:30 PM

needs more Mew

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 3:40 PM

Grizzly Bear need to go back into hibernation. I dont care what critical acclaim they have, nor do I care how many hipsters like to cry themselves to sleep listening to them.

HAVE YOU PEOPLE EVER SEEN GB LIVE? A funeral is more fun. I dont need every show to be a dance party, but jesus christ, Grizzly Bear is terrible live, and thus, I will hate on their albums.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 3:49 PM

I guess mileage varies anon 3:49. I've seen Grizzly Bear live about 5-6 times. I think they are super-talented and really bring their sound to a different level. You say they are terrible live; I say they are one of the better live acts currently touring.

I enjoy reading everybody's comments on these best of the year threads because the comments give suggestions on albums I might have missed. Thanks for all of your comments.

Grizzly Bear > Animal Collective.
I think AC are so overrated and aren't really doing much new... Like, I find GB to be more original (especially with their harmonies).

Embryonic, It's Blitz!, Wolfgang Amadeaus Phoenix = Albums of the Year

2:39 are you serious about pitchfork naming Mt. Eerie their top album? They didn't even best new music it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2009 9:24 PM

does anyone honestly believe that pitchfork won't give top honors to Animal Collective? They might even have the top two songs in My Girls and What Would I want Sky?

Clean sweep.

Pains at Being Pure at Heart put out some great stuff this year!
* What about FOREIGN BORN-Person to Person!!!
It got rave reviews when it came out, and reviewers all said that it would be one of the most underlooked album of 2009. No surprises here, everyone goes with what's popular.
-Girls' new album is probably the most overrated garbage of 2009.
