Jawbox

"JAWBOX IS REUNITING ON THE SHOW TONIGHT! Last week, this iconic 90's post-hardcore band re-released their classic album For Your Own Special Sweetheart. Tonight, they perform together again for the first time since 1997! They are not touring or performing anywhere else - THIS IS IT!" - Jimmy Fallon (actually Sara Schaefer)
As previously mentioned, Jawbox played four songs during an early "rehearsal", and then played "Savory" agan on the actual show last night (12/8). You can tell the above picture was taken during rehearsal because Fred Armisen isn't sitting on the stage next to his Trenchmouth bandmates and his ThunderAnt bandmate Carrie Brownstein of Sleater Kinney (like they were during the actual show) (Trenchmouth and Jawbox played shows together back in the day). Two videos from rehearsal and the one from the actual show, below...

"FF=66"

"68"

"Savory"

I heard the hummus guy is joining Wavves' new band.

Sure seems like SNL these days is afraid to poke fun at Bloomberg with his hypocrisy.

I remember seeing Jawbox in Minneapolis many years ago and missing Trenchmouth. Its cool to see the old pictures on their myspace page of Fred Armisen from back then.

Great band, but that didnt sound so great.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 8:07 AM

Yeah what happened there?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 8:16 AM

Sounded pretty good, what are you talking about?

Posted by John | December 9, 2009 8:58 AM

talking about tuning down half a step, and then bill being out of tune, and then the mix being really bad on top of that

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 9:31 AM

God damn i miss rock and roll that's worth playing.
Maybe not the cleanest performance, but the songs' brilliance and the players' abilities are still there.

Posted by Jim | December 9, 2009 9:39 AM

the 2 rehearsal tracks sounded much better than Savory did. still, great to see them temporarily back. play some shows!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 9:44 AM

after seeing this, i think this was a pretty crumby way to reunite after 12 years.

the sound sucked and they shouldve been doing this in front of their fans.

also, when did zach start to suck on the drums?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:57 AM

It's cool to see them play at all! I mean yea it sounds a bit off but they haven't played together in 12 YEARS! Thas a long time! I'm hoping they had enough fun to play some shows!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 11:07 AM

when did zach start to suck on the drums?!
are you fucking insane?

what show were you watching?

i'm glad they did this, fallon or not -- everyone still loves them, everyone i know was really excited for it, and everyone i know had smiles on their faces when they talked about it last night.

horrible mix. disappointing to say the least.

Posted by JT | December 9, 2009 11:13 AM

Anyone who expected fucking Jimmy Fallon to do justice to a band this good is obviously a retard. Jimmy Fallon fail.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 11:17 AM

You people are fucking crazy.

The mix sounded fine, J.'s voice sounded great, Zac's drumming was as good as ever.
You people are the same ones that think they should tell a soundguy how to do his job at a club.
If you think Jawbox didn't sound good... do NOT ever listen to live music. Only listen to very produced studio recordings because you have no imagination whatsoever.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 11:37 AM

haha there's carrie brownstein and fred armisen rockin out in the back.

Posted by ihatehipsterscum | December 9, 2009 11:43 AM

Anyone who thinks that wasn't fucking amazing, does not know shit about Jawbox.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 11:49 AM

it sucks that the mix (when does tv ever get it right?) is overshadowing the reunion for some of you. who cares?! they rocked it. enjoy it.

Posted by beth | December 9, 2009 11:50 AM

Everything sounded great, and Zack's drumming was as good as ever.

The only thing that was different and sort of changed the overall sound of the band, was Bill's decision to use the Fender amp. It added a "jangliness" that was absent during the Jawbox days. Cool idea to define his guitar parts a bit, but not the same as his "usual" sound.

None of the guitars were at all out of tune as previous posters have complained. They were in the same low tuning that they always played in.
The mix was fine. The people complaining about "the mix" are the same idiots who complain at live shows all the time. Shut up already you know-nothing idiots.

ANONYMOUS: amen sister.

stop hatin' start celebratin'
wooo-woooo!!

i know that some fans want to be really positive about this because it's jawbox and they were an amazing band, but i've got to agree with a lot of these comments: the sound on fallon was bad and the performance not spectacular. i imagine it sounded a lot better live in the room--as far as the mix goes--than it does from the board recording that we're all hearing on tv/hulu... i'll still shell out some cash to see them live if they chose to play some shows, though. i'm sure it would be way better than these performances.

I would have killed to see this in person. Here's hoping they play some shows!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 1:18 PM

the haters are wrong.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 2:20 PM

gnarly drumming. robbins needs to step up to that mic a little more, as the vox kinda went in and out. agreed that this is an odd way to reunite after this much time. shows please?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 2:49 PM

drumming ruled.

know nothing? i know it sounded out of tune and was not distorted enough, and I don't think it was J.

to the person blaming Fallon, how is this his fault? in fact, he gets points for having Jawbox at all. not to mention the Obits a while back.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 2:56 PM

"know nothing? i know it sounded out of tune"

Yep... know-nothing. The guitars weren't even SLIGHTLY out of tune. Just because it doesn't sound exactly the way you remember it sounding on the record, doesn't mean anything is wrong. It just means it is LIVE.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 3:30 PM

Wow - some of you need to grow up. Sorry J. doesn't have time to rehearse to your standards and go on a reunion tour, I think he might have more important things to worry about like his son's health - http://callumrobbins.blogspot.com/

I also wish that they played somewhere else but at least they did this.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 4:12 PM

Will someone tell them to play some reunion shows consarnit, it won't kill you to do a handful for your fans and call it a day.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 4:35 PM

jawbox doesn't owe you anything. be glad you got three songs out of them.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 8:50 PM

They owe us everything actually.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:29 PM

playing for Jimmy Fallon on NBC, way to mess up that legacy there.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 10:37 PM

This brings back a ton of memories. Saw them a bunch of times back in the day, and this measures up nicely.

Jawbox/Jawbreaker reunion tour.

Posted by Eggs1234 | December 10, 2009 9:31 AM

One of the amps had vibrato, they both bend their strings a lot, and a bit of reverb too. Thats the way they sound.
Fallon is OK but yes not the greatest place to play with the contrived crowd in the back.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2009 1:52 AM

to all the haters, zach may look different but he plays exactly like 1996 so i have no idea what the hell you're writing about. j is a master as is bill and to be frank, they were the same band the other night as in 1996, i can tell no difference except a few bum notes and bum vocals. all in all, they were stellar and who fucking cares if a beat or a strum was fudged. still 1000 times better than the shit out on stages now.

Posted by blakeley | December 14, 2009 12:58 PM

know nothing? i know it sounded out of tune and was not distorted enough, and I don't think it was J.

to the person blaming Fallon, how is

The video's down unfortunately. Too bad, I'd have loved to see these guys performance. Still, anyone else here hate Jimmy Fallon? Whenever I watch that dude I just want to pull my eyes out.

Posted by Tumi Luggage | April 18, 2010 10:38 AM

I’ve never heard/seen Jawbox before. It looks like they got someone’s mom to fill in on bass (at least in the video for 68).

Posted by USB Gadgets | October 2, 2010 5:38 PM

Lol. She is the original bassist and not filling in. Yeah, she is old enough to be a mom, they have been around since 1990.

Shucks the videos have gone the way of the illegal music on Youtube. They seem to be rocking it in the picture.

Posted by Mothers Day | October 15, 2010 7:26 PM

It would be nice to see them play live! I hope I get a chance to see them someday performing live (preferably near our state, Texas). :)

I can't view the video anymore. Can't find any other similar videos like these too. Could you please link another video? Thanks in advance!
