Neon Indian

Going by phone/digital camera clips I'd seen online, I wasn't expecting what I got from Neon Indian Tuesday night. This genre called "chillwave" seemed to me all but doomed to ever really work well in the live setting -- not only is it all lo-fi and bedroomy, but Alan Palomo's peers (Toro Y Moi, Washed Out, Memory Tapes) didn't make the decision to recruit a live band. Opener Toro Y Moi was good, but yeah, there is only so much one man can do live.

Neon Indian, fresh off a European tour, played with loads of confidence, improvising, tweaking, and expanding. And they delivered: "Terminally Chill" hit hard, as did "Deadbeat Summer," and the rest of the highlights from their great record. I didn't think there were any songs left for an encore, but what did they do? Come back out (sans-Leanne Macomber) as Vega to play an extended (12" version?), totally spaced/funked-out "No Reason," temporarily turning the place into the best club on earth.

Neon Indian finish their three-night NYC run at Brooklyn Bowl tonight (12/17) with Tigercity and Awesome New Republic (tickets available at the door?). More pictures from the first of two shows at Mercury Lounge below...

Hipsters listening to this garbage and thinking it's so great......

damn.

Great show. Nice guys.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 12:02 PM

Loved the guy who yelled "play that song from pitchfork, man" at them. Then they played it and for a moment everything seemed like I was watching it on indie TV.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 12:04 PM

tix are at the door tonight?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 12:29 PM

I love the album, but I thought the songs sounded incredibly boring live.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 12:39 PM

Saw them last night and I have to agree they far exceeded my expectations. I'd go see them again. First thing that hits me live is that the songs are so much more powerful with more prominent drum and bass. Great basslines. And Paloma's effected voice sounded fantastic. Didn't realize some of the synthier melodies were played on a guitar. Another band whose album and live performances are different in a good way.

You should stop hating and go see them live.

Did MNDR just stand there giving people the finger all night?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 12:49 PM

They killed. They will be huge in 2010.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 1:05 PM

@12:39 - were you at all intoxicated/altered? then it probably was boring!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 1:06 PM

sorry i meant to say "were you not intoxicated"

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

""Loved the guy who yelled "play that song from pitchfork, man" at them. Then they played it and for a moment everything seemed like I was watching it on indie TV.""

- This is the downward spiral, now music will be resurrected just like Disco. Like Disco's desperate attempt to comeback.

Seen this guy as Ghoshustler, Vega, and Neon Indian.
All boring, but RIPE for this atmosphere of Animal Collective & MGMT have created

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Posted by aNoN | December 17, 2009 1:21 PM

i'd hit MNDR

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 1:25 PM

Idiot, why do you keep going to see him if he's so zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Sounds like you secretly love him.
Hey, did tonight BBowl show sell out? are there really gonna be tix at the door?

Great show last night. I was definintely impressed with how well all the stuff translated live with a full band. Toro y Moi's set ending jam was also one of the best parts of the whole show

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 2:33 PM

ARE THERE GONNA BE TIX AT THE DOOR?!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2009 3:17 PM

MAYBE!! NOBODY KNOWS!! IT DOESN'T MATTER!! IT'S F*CKING NEON INDIAN!!

That said, you can buy tix here: http://www.brooklynbowl.com/event-detail?id=2631

Doors are at 6 and I can't imagine they won't be selling tickets.

Neon Indian was decent, I felt a little was lost in the translation from album to live show. Good venue for them.

i am sure MNDR would hit you back.

nothing wrong with trying to be meaningful instead of copying Aerial Pink.

Neon Indian were good live. Toro Y Moi was good too, and a decent guy as well.

Was up front at the bar while MNDR played. Sounded ok, I guess, but she looked like pure nonsense.
