Pheonix

One night after headlining a bill with three openers, Phoenix were the only act of a special Clear Channel-sponsored performance (for online station iheartradio.com) at the P.C. Richards & Son Theater in TriBeCa (12/3). They played six songs in a tight 35-minute set, with very little banter, for a full house of contest winners and VIPs. It's been a wildly successful year for the newly-minted Grammy nominees, who also performed their cover of Air's "Playground Love", though Gordon Tracks aka Thomas Mars of Phoenix also sings on the original. I was there, front row, slightly to the left. It was amazing. And then i got to meet the band after in their VIP room, and got autographs and pictures with them.

It was so different than seeing them at a 6000 person Central Park show.

That Maxwells show was sold out. The room was emptyish because Camel Cigerats, promoter of that tour, why else would they play Maxwells and Bowery Ballroom at that time, they were, for sure, much bigger in New York City by then, they had already sold out Bowery before the record even came out, and now again with the record being released to rave reviews, blocked off half the venue.

This attitude, this IKNEWITFIRST doesnt work.

See, I know they're not sell-outs, because they never were really indie to begin with... I still felt like a piece of human traffic in that show last night. Bring'em in, lackluster audience, singer begging for more applause, then it was over. What did I expect...

"That drummer is awesome."

Indeed he is! It's Thomas Hedlund from Cult of Luna and you should check them out!
