Dark Castle @ Union Pool (more by Sam Marble)
Dark Castle

In recent months, the upswing in metal coverage on BV has rendered the moniker "Week In Metal" unnecessary. Small blurbs in "WIM" (as we call it around here) about Dark Castle have given way to photosets from their shows and posting of tour dates as they happen. Chalk it up to progress.

Starting this week, we will introduce a bit of a new direction for the old Week In Metal column, but without straying too far from the previous. The new column, entitled Short Wave Warfare, will scale back a bit, focusing on news that falls below the radar as well as shining a spotlight on new bands and upcoming shows in the NYC area. It won't be weekly. I hope you enjoy it.

Stay tuned for more upcoming shows in addition to Coalesce at Europa, Magrudergrind at Cake Shop, and The Hope Conspiracy at Union Pool, as well as a year-end best of 2009 post from myself and some of my favorite artists.

Thanks for reading. News on Portal, Oxbow, Master's Hammer, a collaboration between sunn O))) and Ulver, a new Haiyaino Daisuki & Gridlink, Amenra, Earthride, Kreator, Mammoth Grinder and so much more as (the new) Short Wave Warfare continues below....

Do you think Portal goes to church?

Portal

If your new band features members of Portal, it's safe to say that riffs wil be grotesque and utterly badass. Impetuous Ritual delivers on said promise on their new LP, Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence with a swirl of punishing atonal guitars but less of the utter mayhem that marks a Portal release. Recommended! Dig on the first track to trickle out from the LP, "Ceremonial Disembowelment" above and pick up that LP here. In related news, Portal was recently interviewed by Invisible Oranges and played a launch party for their new album Swarth, and the pics are astonishing. Dig on one below, and check out a bunch here.

Oxbow has released a new and limited 12" on Hydra Head, Songs for the French, out NOW. Featuring three studio tracks and four culled from European live shows (undoubtedly where Eugene removed his pants), you can order yours here or win a copy of this limited LP by emailing us at BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM with a subject line of "French Me"! In other Hydra Head news, the label will issue Harvey Milk's "Bob Weston Sessions" material (which surfaced as a limited 2xLP earlier this year) as a new CD on the label on 1/26.

Without touching on the current ongoing controversy with bootleg editions and the band, Master's Hammer have released their first album in fourteen years. Mantras is available directly through the band in CD, Digital and 180g vinyl formats. Stream portions of the entire record here.

If you missed it, we talked about the new Ludicra here, but you can download the new track above as well. Look for the band to hit the road in 2010!

The great Order from Chaos, which would go on to feature members of Revenge and Ares Kingdom, have returned, and scheduled a hometown (Kansas City on Jan 2, 2010) and a west coast show (LA on 1/16 with Gravehill). A Chicago, NYC, and San Antonio date is "in the works", but dig on the Order from Chaos flyer for the KC show below.

Order from Chaos

Haiyaino Daisuki has announced that their new EP, Invincible Gate Mind of the Infernal Fire Hell or did you mean Hawaii Daisuki?, is finally on the way, due on vinyl in Jan 2010 and on CD in March. Meanwhile, Jon Chang's other project, Gridlink, is prepping to record their new LP Orphan next year and will release the vinyl with a Bonus 12" of their previous LP, Amber Grey which will be two sided "with side A being the original mix (no bass) and side B being a new mix with a bass track by Ted Patterson" (of Burnt By The Sun). The remixed and newly bass-ed LP will be re-released with on CD as well.

Merrimack - "In The Halls of White Death" Video

Ohio's Fistula has followed up the awesome Burdened By Your Existence with a new EP, We The Beastout now via Choking Hazard. Dig on "Bi-Polar Bear" from that EP above. Fistula also has a split in the works with the mighty Ghast and are prepping to reissue vinyl for Hymns of Slumber via Hydro-Phonic Records. The Corey Bing side project Accept Death will also see the light of day on the label.

Sourvein are in the final throes of completion of their new album!

Chi-town doomers Indian are streaming a new song at their myspace.

Ulver Live
Ulver

Besides all of the Ulver live rituals that have been happening as of late, the band has announced two interesting pieces of news lately regarding upcoming recording:

...We are painfully aware of the passing since Shadows. It's time to get another Ulver proper out, and we have started to write. Our own dark brand.

Subsidiarily: We have recorded some hippie songs, from the sixties, bands like The 13th Floor Elevators, Byrds, Jefferson Airplane and stranger Aquarian folks. We aim to make this into a full album, a kind of Ulver kicking against the pricks. We'll put up a rough mix of our take at I had too much to dream last night, next week.

There is also a collaboration with Sunn O))). We had a terrific tracking session with the Nazgûls after their appearance at the Øya festival well over a year ago. We spent a month or so editing the material and adding our sheen to the sound. Since then it has unfortunately been lying dormant due to difficulties getting everyone together. We hope to join forces and finish the thing this spring.

Speaking of sunn O))), Stephen O'Malley's project with James Plotkin and Aaron Turner entitled Lotus Eaters, have reissued Mind Control for Infants on 2xLP courtesy Taiga Records.

Amenra have released a new and mostly acoustic EP entitled Afterlife. The release is not the usual doom-and-gloom fare from the Belgians, as the EP serves to provide "comfort and solace to the band's newborn children after they are gone". Dig on a track from that EP above. In other news, check out Amenra on VBS.tv below. A good portion is interview (in their native tongue), but there are KILLER live clips that bookend the segment.

In the past couple months, Translation Loss has dropped a pair of notable releases including Struck By Lightning's Serpents and Fight Amp's Manners and Praise. Download one track from each LP above. Brutal Panda is set to release the Fight Amp LP on wax (they are also responsible for the recent split 7" with Black Tusk), with preorders ongoing here. Struck By Lightning, which features Greg Lahm of ex-Mouth Of The Architect fame, recently returned from a set of dates with Pelican and Black Cobra. No NYC dates are currently scheduled for either, but we'll keep you posted if that changes. Full Fight Amp dates are below.

Hooded MenaceHoodedHooded Menace is mixing their new album for Profound Lore as well as some material for split releases. In addition, the boys have released their 2007 demo The Eyeless Horde on cassette.

Though the body isn't really cold on last year's Antikosmos, Swedish black metallers Arckanum recently dropped another new LP, ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ via Moribund Records. Download "Þursvitnir" from that album above.

Vacant Coffin - "Leprosarium Tombs" VIDEO

Featuring members of Balboa and Towers, Philadelphia's Elder play a fierce brand of post-hardcore and have released their new LP Reflect via Forge Again Records. Buy a copy of that and/or their debut 10" here, stream the entire album here, and download "Friendly Fire" above.

Purveyors of pure Maryland Doom, Earthride, have begun work on their new LP.

Save the date. The Dillinger Escape Plan's Option Paralysis impacts on 3/23/10.

Mammoth Grinder - "Sentenced To Hell"

"Shamanic Doom" quartet Bong's 3CD live extravaganza Novum Castellum was a fascinating document earlier this year; sitar collides with minimalistic doom... it's what I expected Om to sound like when Al added a member of Grails. Now the minimalistic doom band is prepping a new live album called Gilgamesh Lives for Blackest Rainbow Records, and if you enjoy Om but with a heavier Eastern influence (and don't mind lo-fi recordings) pick up a copy.

Cathedral will release a new LP, The Guessing Game, this spring for Rise Above Records (vocalist Lee Dorian's label).

Metal-noise terrorists Wold will release Working Together For Our Privacy in mid-Feb via Profound Lore. The album features three compositions of "experimental, surreal, hypnotizing, and bizarre? material yet.

The Gates Of Slumber - "Blood & Thunder" Video

The previously discussed Buzzoven material will surface on Violence From The Vault, due in Jan via Relapse Records.

Harvey Milk - "I've Got A Love" at The Milestone

Final and Fear Falls Burning have completed a self-titled collaborative LP which is up for pre-order via Conspiracy Records. In case you missed in, Justin Broadrick's other project, Godflesh, is reuniting. Stream a few of those tracks at the FFB myspace.

Speaking of Fear Falls Burning, the band (and Nadja) recently contributed to Year of No Light's submissions to their split with with Machu Picchu Mother Future, a one off project featuring members of Lesbian, Conifer, and Souvenir's Young America. Stream MPMF's contributions at their myspace. AYONL's contributions will surface on a CD in the new year.

Pollution has released their new n.s. DRUGS 7" on Desensitized Records. More details can be found here.

Kill The Client have dropped a new split 7" with Thousandswilldie via RSR.

Acheron's "I am Heathen" Music Video from their new LP The Final Conflict: The Last Days Of God. Pick up a copy here.

Kreator has scheduled US tour dates including Nokia Theater on March 6th with Voivod (!), Nachtmystium, Lazarus AD, and Evile. Tickets are on presale here. Nachtmystium is currently working on Black Meddle II (the tentative title) to be recorded in January.

Lions of Tsavo is streaming a new song, "Blood Meridian", at their myspace.

Grand Magus has begun work on their new album, prepping to hit the studio in late December for a release on Roadrunner Records in Spring 2010.

Some great nuggets in here. I bought my Kreator/Voivod ticket about the second it went on pre-sale. I'm glad they are giving it a go (at least live) without Piggy. It would be dishonorable to him to not go out there and bash out the old tunes.

NEW CATHEDRAL! Hopefully they'll tour America for it. I'm DYING to see them live. If Entombed are coming over this Spring, I hold out hope for Cathedral as well. Shit, maybe they'll play Maryland Death Fest too.

Posted by noamjamski | December 9, 2009 4:34 PM

that was pretty harsh 4:33.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2009 4:35 PM

at least he could have said why he thinks they suck. admittedly, i am not a HUGE fan of portal but what they do is different and more original than 90 percent of the shit that comes out nowadays that passes for "metal." fuck internet critics. go see the band then say they suck. idiots.
