These Are Powers

"I'll walk you through it, it's kind of funny. You know when you pass by a grocery store and there's this grate that goes into the floor and then there's this narrow metal staircase that goes down into the basement where they have storage and stuff? It's like that. First thing we had to do was fit the staircase with these wooden 2 x 4s so people wouldn't completely die when they went down. So we fixed the staircase, and we built a soundproofing wall in between the space and the street, which was totally remarkable. You couldn't hear anything from the street--we had a subwoofer going off, and Knyfe Hyts and Sleigh Bells were super loud. I was so happy. It totally dampened the sound and that's like two layers of 2 x 4's with insulation in the middle. We cleared everything out of his basement. There's no stage. In the back we put soundproofing blankets on the door and the door to the bar area. In the back there's a bar. We built a bathroom in the back so everything's contained to one floor. We can fit about 125 people comfortably." [Greg Finch to the Villge Voice]
Under 100's third and final show took place at the venue on Thursday, December 10th. Darlings, Dan Friel and These Are Powers were on the bill. More pictures from that show, below...

Those are powers? In what sense? They do not seem powerful. What powers are they talking about? I mean, you can't necessarily judge a book by its cover, but I would find it hard to believe that they are, as they claim, a definition of powers.

"We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams.
Wandering by lone seas-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams, World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world forever, it seems" -Arthur O'Shaughnessy

ugh, these are powers are such a shitstorm of a band. empty, biting, unoriginal bullshit. stupid style over substance, lets do whats trendy while exhibiting no aesthetic taste in our music or our "look" crap. no thank you. dissapear.

I <3 These Are Powers. Then again, I like style. Substance can suck it.

I would agree with 1:39 if they had simply cobbled together their beats in ableton live but nah, they actually play that shit and it's fucking amazing to watch. drummer dude is a fuckin wizard.

These Are Powers used to sound a lot better than the stuff they are trying to pull off these days.

I can feel the power at a These are Powers show. One of very few bands that can live up to a name like that!

Ohh…how nicely the basement area was used for the show.. I am really impressed to know that. The way all arrangements made for soundproofing was amazing. Its really a nice example to arrange the show like this for others who can enjoy the live music on these guide lines. The pictures are good and give the feel that the arrangements were really proper. Everyone there was enjoying the music from the soul.
