"omfg!!!!! watching tune-yards on stage now. this is some of the GREATEST ish I've seen in a minute!!!!" - Questlove

Tune Yards

tUnE-YaRdS blew away Questlove (and everyone) while he was waiting to join the Dirty Projectors on stage on 11/22. A set of pictures from her opening set at that Bowery Ballroom show are in this post.

Her next show is her only scheduled one that I know about, and it takes place in NYC on December 23rd at The Stone. She goes on at 10pm after an 8pm set by her sister Ruth Garbus ("Formerly of the group Feathers, and currently of Happy Birthday, Ruth Garbus has been spending most of her time making songs in Vermont. She comes south to share her lilting and penetrating music for voice and electric guitar.")

The Bowery show with The Roots was the last show of a tour for tUnE-YaRdS and Dirty Projectors. It was also the fourth of four NYC shows in a row. Two were at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and the first was also at Bowery Ballroom. More pictures from the last, below...

This look like the girl version of the guy from Baltimore who opened up for No Age/Dan Deacon/Deerhunter show at Brooklyn Bowl back in August....

The initial novelty quickly faded to an annoying vocal loop gimmick repeated throughout the entire set, laughable facial expressions, and over the top screaming substituting for excitement. Reminded us of a girl performing for her indulgent parents.

We almost left the venue to escape her relentless onslaught of quirkiness before the (amazing) Projectors set. Even the band name is annoying: lower cases, caps, dash. Oy.

Yeah, John. Couldn't stand that relentless onslaught of memorable hooks, dynamic harmonies, tight bass lines, and rhythms you can actually dance to. Not to mention real passion and warmth. Glad you enjoyed the Dirty Projectors though. What a technically precise, sonically diverse, culturally significant set they played. Love their lyrics.

4:10 didn't work. Try again

I agree with Anonymous 4:35 about the bass player being tight. But, in agreement with John about everything else, I actually felt sorry for him.

I love her music, and think the MEH thing is the epitome of the bummer part of this scene, but come on, her name is MERRIL!

Stunning missed opportunity 4:10
