Grant Hart
Grant Hart

Blurt: Do you ever feel like your contributions to Husker Du are overlooked?

Grant Hart: This isn't thrown out as a condemnation of Bob, but I think that my fans know my material better than a lot of Bob's fans know his material. The reason I say that is every time I've gone to see a Bob Mould concert, someone has yelled out the name of one of my songs. When I'm out touring, I maybe hear that one out of five concerts.

The last couple of years of Husker Du proved this, but the larger your audience is the more dumb elements it's going to encompass. Bob's fans who never heard Husker Du, but heard Sugar first have more of a "Grant sucks" kind of attitude. I think with the popularity of Copper Blue, Bob ended up with a bunch of cowboys for listeners. If Bob and I were as competitive as our fans are, we would have never gotten past Land Speed Record.

That Grant Hart interview also revealed that the main reason there will never be a Husker reunion is not any rift between Grant and Bob, but rather that neither of them wants to work with Greg.

do people still go out here in the snow? just moved here from texas, and i still want to go out, hoping that things are still fun.

That comment about Greg Norton was way bigger than anything about 'Bob fans vs. Grant fans' - though it seems a bit like it was taken out of context/said wrong. Greg Norton isn't a professional musician anymore, like the other two - he's a chef, has his own restaurant.

I think/hope that's what Grant Hart was trying to say - because it did sound like an insult.

The Grant Hart show is still on. Just spoke to someone at the 92YT and he confirmed it.

Of all the shows to cancel due to weather, why tonight's DBA show? Blank Dogs and Led Er Est are both NYC based. I don't get it, especially with all the other shows with out of town bands pressing on.

Grant Hart and SR&HHH were great. Well worth the trip in the snow. Very light turnout which is unfortunate because people missed a very good show.

GROOMS played effortless after a 4 week tour. a younger band open called Total Slacker. these kids dont even have an album out or anything, they played they're hearts out.

Posted by lydia | December 20, 2009 1:21 PM

were you even there? total slacker was terrible

Grant just can't seem to get a break. It is a shame. He is a solid musician. But man...he MUST get over Bob. He is simply not Bob Mould, and simply will not attract the sizeable audience that BM has had and still has (albeit smaller than the Sugar days, but still respectable.)

Bob Mould does not go off on Grant Hart in every interview, in fact he really hates having to talk about him at all - and not so much because of animosity but more because people keep looking for animosity (and Grant doesn't help sometimes.)

MOVE ON GRANT!

Hoping he comes back to the city on a night where more people will go see him. He deserves better as a musician. But as a person...who knows.

^You are playing into exactly what Grant was speaking to, fans who keep the feud going in the blogsphere. Think about it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 7:43 PM

no, in this case the response was to a press interviewer provoking the stoking of the feud, which aside from business problems with rights, masters, and SST royalties, isn't a personal feud anymore. If, like Bob at this point, Grant only focused on the legacy of the band (as he has finally started to), he could do these interviews about Husker without sounding jealous and sour.
His music is beyond the need to.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2009 8:19 PM

but the point is taken re. saying that "Grant isn't Bob"...true that can come off as "Grant Sucks." He doesn't. It does have to be stated though that Bob Mould has had a consistent and prolific post-Huskers career in the past 2O years starting with Workbook - and between 1989 and 1993 all of his work matched his work in Husker Du. Since '94, he's had great moments but not in the same stellar sphere as 83 to 93.
Hart had a great start with Intolerance in 89, but he hasn't been able to maintain a strong body of work since, despite some very good material here and there. How's the new one?

Greg is friendly w/Bob and Grant. Additionally,Greg plays music with David King drummer from The Bad Plus in a band called The Gang Font. December 19, 2009 5:33 PM

Re: Which is really telling because Dave King is a big ass with an attitude that plays derivative jazz and previously played funk jam band music that was bad. Not good bad also.
Big rock star attitude in which he goes back to Mpls and has a NYC chip on his shoulder from playing here at West village jazz clubs.

You dont usually see Bob talking bad about the old band and whatnot. He usually leaves it alone. SST was not kind to many bands and Husker had a few major label changes.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2009 11:01 AM

and Bob isn't friendly with Greg actually. No big fight, but there is no rapport anymore at all between Bob and the other two.
