Brian Jonestown Massacre

The Brian Jonestown Massacre is back and set to release their tenth studio album, Who Killed Sgt. Pepper? on February 23rd. The 13-track album was recorded throughout 2009 in Iceland and Berlin and features Spaceman 3 legend Will Carruthers on bass, vocalist Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir and a variety of international musicians contributing textures not previously heard on a BJM album. It is to be released on bandleader Anton Newcombe's own label, "a recordings LTD", distributed though Red Eye.
With this album, BJM's revolving door lineup now includes guitarist/vocalist and "Not If You Were the Last Dandy on Earth" songwriter Matt Hollywood, who previously left the group (other ex-member & Dig! scene-stealer, master tambourinist Joel Gion, has been back for a few years). The band's current lineup is posted below.

Brian Jonestown Massacre plays shows in Australia and New Zealand this February/March, Europe in April and May, and then a North American tour in late May and June. They'll play a show at NYC's Webster Hall on Sunday, June 6th. Tickets are now on AmEx presale. General sale starts Friday, January 22nd at noon.

Songs from the new album are featured below in videos put out by the band. In one, a stop-motion Lego zombie invasion is soundtracked by new song "Let's Go Fucking Mental." In another, public doman animation from China follows the band's "Dekta! Dekta! Dekta!" Both are well worth a look. Those, more album info, and all tour dates are below...

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2010 1:28 PM

this was exciting news until i heard that horrible lego song. yikes. notice that the rehearsal video has a lot of OLD bjm music playing over it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2010 1:30 PM

There last album was terrible. Pissed I actually paid for it.

Posted by anonymous2 | January 20, 2010 1:41 PM

These guys are irrelevant. And based on the new album title, they're desperately aware of that fact.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2010 1:42 PM

chances they actually make it to the end of this tour?

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2010 3:02 PM

I'm a BJM fan (although the new tracks above sound like shit) but that top photo of Frankie Teardrop really shows what years of working with Anton will do to ya.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2010 9:09 PM

Yeah Anton looks like a ball to work with. Some great music in the past but is anybody from the original lineup left except Anton?
Thats a lot dates in row there which might be a miracle to see finished judging by the past.

Steel Reserve top three worst "beers" ever made.

UB, Matt Hollywood is an original member, back in the fold.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2010 11:17 AM

The tambourine player Joel Gion is such a douche. Not sure why they need him, but I can't stand watching someone rock out and dominate the stage with a tambourine. Used to see him working at reckless records on haight street many many years ago and the dude was always glamming it up.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2010 11:19 AM

Love the photo of Frankie!

Despite the last two albums, their live shows were phenomenal on last year's tour. They mostly did old stuff and it was great to see Matt Hollywood playing again. No antics from Anton either. They've finally gone pro.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2010 10:34 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 24, 2010 2:58 PM

Im glad too see that you people have no sense of of what real music is. You just want another BJM album you can sing along too and tap your foot to make you feel like your cool or that you arent such a shitty person. Anyone who takes crap about BJM's "new sound" or"direction" might as well died in the 90's and or try making their own music. What he has done and continues too do is unearthly and priceless and im not sorry that you cant dig it. It makes me mad too hear the ignorance of the so called music heads. Anton, the new album is fuckin the shit, and i wana go fucking mental on all this whinny untalenetd little pricks who cant have "thank god for mental illness 2" go listen too your fuckin pop stations and ill see you in Portland Anton! much love and gratitude, everyone who isnt down, fuck off-dig

NEW BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE STUFF IS CRAP. ANTON IS RETARTED, LITERALLY.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2010 1:29 PM

There are 100 fucking people in my shitty little town alone who are doing the same SHIT Anton is doing right now, on thier Macs! It's NOTHING NEW. Ever wonder why they play mostly all their old music on tour? Because people would throw fucking rocks at them if the played crap like "Detka! Detka! Detka!" or "Let's Go Fucking Mental". I would LOVE to see the crowd reaction to a BJM set that cosisted of ALL new material. That would be hilarious! Bet ya 10 bucks they play pretty much the same set list they've been playing for the past 10 years. Starts with "Whoever you Are", ends with "Swallowtail" and all the standards in between. "Nevertheless", "Servo", "Nailing Honey To The Bee", "When Jokers Attack" and the ever present "WHOOOOOOO?" YAWN! Time to call it a day ANTON. Ricky should kick your ass and leave your tired band. Joel is an idiot. The Quarter After is a much better band! Props Rob!

To the uninitiated, musical "vegans" out there, I say, LET THEM EAT CROW.

http://www.cbbfestival.com/blog/2010/01/28/a-review-of-the-brian-jonestown-massacres-who-killed-sgt-pepper/

As you're obviously unable to evolve sonically with the times, and with the bands, perhaps you should stick to your cute little bands like We Are Scientists.

Posted by Oliver Twisted | January 30, 2010 3:10 PM

100 people in your town doing what i am doing?releasing songs in russian in russia?

eat my fuck but don't bite too hard when i cum anonymous little internet nobody.i wish them luck if they are.atleast they are doing something...you should try it sometime.and about me playing the same set for the last ten years?

you wish i could name one of your songs...one of your anything...thats the point...you don't mean shit...and more than half of my set is under ten years old...just like the girls you fancy you fucking tit.

ha...admit it...you wish someone cared about anything related to you or what you have done unfortunately most people go to burger king because they are stupid and hungry, not because of the cook...

whatever.

This music is for the future...
it may not appeal as much to the simple, mundane lot of thinkers and listeners that are ignorant to the higher artistic expression few who claim to be musicians actually utilize. Anton, you're a true artist and musician. I appreciate your sacrifice and genius.

Posted by nigger lover | February 3, 2010 8:11 AM

Anton's schtick is really getting tiresome.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2010 8:49 AM

This is all pretty fucking hilarious - people bitchin' about older sounds and newer sounds = just bitchin'. I dig the BJM, period. The earlier stuff rocked my world. Hopefully this stuff does too, but if it doesn't, I'm not about to start calling Anton N and the crew a bunch of retards - I'm just gonna hit as many shows as possible and groove.

Peace.

Posted by AntonK | February 3, 2010 8:13 PM

Way to go Anton! New album is nuts, from Detroit but goin to chicago for the show. Genius man cant wait for the next one.

Posted by Dan | February 5, 2010 4:24 PM

Wow - i had no idea this had gone so far. I posted the original (don't like the Lego song) comment, but didn't mean anything that bad. I just checked back in. I am a turd. You are one of the greats of our generation. Sorry, Anton.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2010 4:38 PM

I've been listening to Smoking Acid and some of Who killed Sgt. Pepper and my friends are all like, "Wow, what the fuck is that?" And I'm like "BJM" and their jaws drop. I dig it, too - especially the sheer technical proficiency of it - but I sense an emotional disconnection - a distance. Maybe that's the point. Am I missing some pathos here? Is that what it is? The vocals are so buried... it's like a huge thrumming wail of sound... a little frightening.

Posted by antonk | February 5, 2010 9:09 PM

I mean, shit... I just listened to Swallowtail and that tune put a chill up my spine - for a jaded freak like me, that's rare. Haunting stuff, Anton.

Way to go Anton! You are coming to Missouri! Saw Dandy Warhols here and their show was brilliant, I like their new stuff live better than recorded. Looking forward to seeing your show. I never thought you would come here. Bring a long long show please, none of that in and out in five songs like the early Stones did. I can't say why people didn't get MY Bloody Valentine or this new stuff, probably they just want the same stuff originally put out in BJM early days. This happens to every band when they change something, everyone thinks they have sold out or lost imagination or talent. Drug music indeed. I'm sober and I catch a buzz from it. Anton, we are gonna need you to legalise pot pretty soon, the beer and wine ain't cuttin it. Can't wait to see the show. By the way, hope the volcano in Iceland isn't screwing up your flight plans or way of life. Hope you play Here It Comes live, and bring Miranda Lee Richards if her career isn't keeping her busy. For that matter bring the Dandy's for a legendary show. Love your music then to now! And don't listen to all these idiots, just keep your normal professionalism, talents, and vision honed to a nice sharp edge. thanks

Anton responding to a forum in barely comprehensible ranting...followed by 10 "we love you anton" posts.

never saw that one coming.

ya'll need to stop poking the bee's nest - just let them keep to their isolated patch of flowers, drinking their own diluted honey.

of course, this being BV - can't expect that. maybe just pick a less obvious mark.

Saw last nights Toronto gig, and it was probably the best gig they have managed here (there have been some disasters in Canada along the way). band was tight, no drama just good times.
Unfortunately I had to leave at the 2 hour mark (when the show was getting even better - Anton - - Tim Hortons Sucks sorry man but it's shitty coffee)
Glad to see sobriety is working for the band,
As for the album I picked up the vinyl last night (keeping the band in cigarettes for another day) and am looking forward to listening tonight (i'm listening to crappy mp3 of it at work and so far I like the whole album, fuck people why should he keep doing the same shit over and over I hate bands that don't grow)
Only regret is I was denied media due to the oversold situation (it was packed), could have got some great pics
Go see the tour you won't be disappointed

Posted by eddie | June 3, 2010 8:57 AM

I absolutely love the new album and the new direction of the last 2. Some of it rocks my balls so hard that literally go berzerker. Iceland. so very cool. Everything these guys do is never redundant. If people want you to keep writing the same music, which has always been brilliant. They should just stick to Tepid Peppermint and delve into the great history of rock where that music came from. A good artist will always evolve and change. A mediocre one finds something they are successful with and keep doing a little change to it each time. Ho Hum. ANTON PLEASE CONSIDER COMING BACK TO CHICAGO SOON OR DETROIT OR GRAND RAPIDS. Your band is Fucking awesome
