I don't think the post makes fun of jews but it stereotypes individuals. As a jewish person I feel a bit weird about that photos inclusion in this entry.

you'd think that our community, however much a community it is, would not include people whose very first instinct upon seeing a photo of an orthodox family would be to make a pretty shitty jewish joke. but then you think about this community, and you read some of the other comments on this site, and it makes total, unfortunate, sad sense.

the combination of the title and the picture does "Make Fun of Jews" (i'm not a jew by the way). I don't think people should be offended but that is really what you're doing. You're trying to be funny at the expense of those religious jews.

not to mention that you probably know that using that picture will invite anonymous people to make tasteless jokes.

I never suspected BV of having a real handle on biting social commentary, and assume he put that pic up as a poke fun at the casting call description. But now that the informed rational bunch of us have spoken, can you please take the pic down, as it only fuels the stupidity and hate?

these 4 people in the photo are individuals who probably hate the internet for it's offensive content and therefore choose not to log on. i think they'd especially dislike being part of it. out of respect for these 4 human beings i suggest it comes down.

The opinion thus far was that BV didn't do anything offensive but clearly it caused and will continue to to further hateful comments.

Jason's right to be offended is as important as your right to tell him to not be. Neither are hate. Hate though, should not be tolerated, and if a benign action causes hate and can be reversed? It should be.

If identifying with race and religion so strongly is part and parcel of celebrating the diversity of people's ethnic and cultural heritage/practices, then it is far from weird. It's weird to live in an atheistic disconnected world and perceiving your isolation and aloofness as "rational".

As a Jewish person, I don't identify with Hasids at all. You can make fun of fundamentalist cult-member wackos of any type all you want.
Contrary to popular belief, Hasids have nothing to do with traditional Judaism. They are more similar to a cult and a fairly recent phenomenon. In fact, in many neighborhoods, the Hasids drove away the "regular" Jews and took over. The only people I detest more than Hasids are fundamentalist chauvinist, child-murdering Muslims and fundamentalist right-wing christians.

I think the post is just pointing out that just because the ad asked for Williamsburg/Lower East Side types doesn't mean they will get applicants who shop at urban outfitters/play music/may have tattoos. They could just as easily get Orthodox Jews applying to be on the show since they also live in those neighborhoods as well.

i think BV is actually down with the Yids. the first poster, however, probably belongs to Sharpton's or Farrakhan's congregation.

The ad called for "Williamsburg/Lower East Side types." The photo is of people who fit that description, though obviously very much not in the way the ad meant. Come on, people, it's hilarious. (For what it's worth, I'm a non-chassidish Orthodox Jew.)
