Dude in the picture is a male model as a side gig to his fulltime job being a slumlord of shitty rundown apartments with jacked-up rent prices in the Burg, right?
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 9:57 AM
wow, is it Make Fun of Jews day on brooklynvegan or something? kinda weird.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:15 AM
Just for the record, I can't tell if 9:57 is being racist or not, but the post itself does not Make Fun of Jews.
Posted by brooklynvegan | January 12, 2010 10:22 AM
that video is a waste of time.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:22 AM
yeah, my comment was more directed to 9:57's generalization.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:26 AM
I don't think the post makes fun of jews but it stereotypes individuals. As a jewish person I feel a bit weird about that photos inclusion in this entry.
If the call had been for greenpoint types, putting an obviously polish individual would have had the same effect. I think the word the poster was looking for was inappropriate...
BV, you could have NOT gone this route, but you did, right?
Posted by jason | January 12, 2010 10:26 AM
ummm how do we contact them?
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:28 AM
I think it's making fun of Dinner With the Band whose post calls for "Williamsburg and Lower East Side types".

if you weird about that photo then you are self-hating

"Williamsburg/Lower East Side types - Models okay."
Are they ashamed to ask for hipsters? No need to be all sly about it.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:37 AM
10:34 no. 2 justifies me feeling weird about the inclusion of that photo.
BV seriously. You meant well... but take it down.
Posted by jason | January 12, 2010 10:37 AM
10:15...you mean for a CHANGE? I notice racial bias (especially towards Jews; check the whole Williamsburg Naked Bike Route from December) a lot on this site.
Sort of demoralizing. But I need to remind myself that the so-called "Art/Music/Youth Culture Blogs" are about real estate, right RT?
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:48 AM
you'd think that our community, however much a community it is, would not include people whose very first instinct upon seeing a photo of an orthodox family would be to make a pretty shitty jewish joke. but then you think about this community, and you read some of the other comments on this site, and it makes total, unfortunate, sad sense.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:51 AM
the combination of the title and the picture does "Make Fun of Jews" (i'm not a jew by the way). I don't think people should be offended but that is really what you're doing. You're trying to be funny at the expense of those religious jews.
not to mention that you probably know that using that picture will invite anonymous people to make tasteless jokes.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:55 AM
I never suspected BV of having a real handle on biting social commentary, and assume he put that pic up as a poke fun at the casting call description. But now that the informed rational bunch of us have spoken, can you please take the pic down, as it only fuels the stupidity and hate?
Posted by jason | January 12, 2010 10:55 AM
these 4 people in the photo are individuals who probably hate the internet for it's offensive content and therefore choose not to log on. i think they'd especially dislike being part of it. out of respect for these 4 human beings i suggest it comes down.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:56 AM
10:55 #1 - an example of rational and moral thought.
Posted by jason! | January 12, 2010 10:57 AM
addition to 10:56: the casting call does deserve to be made fun of though.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 10:58 AM
also... who took the photo? did they give permission to have it used in this fashion? You usualyl credit your photogs... not this time?
Posted by jason | January 12, 2010 10:58 AM
it isnt that big of a deal but imagine you wrote "Dinner with the band needs audience members from NYC" and then you had a picture of a black guy dressed like a "thug". i bet you'd be a lot less likely to do that.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:00 AM
Why is everybody so fucking uptight on here?? Lighten up, people!!
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:05 AM
agreed with 11:04. Jason, CHILL OUT PLEASE.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:12 AM
11:00, your example is not a good analogy.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:13 AM
Is this the first "Serious" BV thread ever? Please, nothing here was offensive compared with the crap that gets posted on RIP threads and elsewhere on this site.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:20 AM
brooklyn vegan, if you take down this photo you are embarking on a slippery slope. What's next? taking down the "I'm glad he died" comments?
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:21 AM
I don't think Jason needs to "chill".
The opinion thus far was that BV didn't do anything offensive but clearly it caused and will continue to to further hateful comments.
Jason's right to be offended is as important as your right to tell him to not be. Neither are hate. Hate though, should not be tolerated, and if a benign action causes hate and can be reversed? It should be.
Posted by hyde | January 12, 2010 11:29 AM
I'm more offended about the fact that you have to give your height & weight in order to be an audience member.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:30 AM
it's weird that people identify with race and religion so strongly.
-rational atheist person
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:30 AM
if it doesn't involve a duck then brooklyn vegan doesn't care. jews are below animals for him.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 11:37 AM
i enjoy BV's reminders about Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Hannukah every year.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 12:01 PM
If identifying with race and religion so strongly is part and parcel of celebrating the diversity of people's ethnic and cultural heritage/practices, then it is far from weird. It's weird to live in an atheistic disconnected world and perceiving your isolation and aloofness as "rational".

As a Jewish person, I don't identify with Hasids at all. You can make fun of fundamentalist cult-member wackos of any type all you want.
Contrary to popular belief, Hasids have nothing to do with traditional Judaism. They are more similar to a cult and a fairly recent phenomenon. In fact, in many neighborhoods, the Hasids drove away the "regular" Jews and took over. The only people I detest more than Hasids are fundamentalist chauvinist, child-murdering Muslims and fundamentalist right-wing christians.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 5:59 PM
I think the post is just pointing out that just because the ad asked for Williamsburg/Lower East Side types doesn't mean they will get applicants who shop at urban outfitters/play music/may have tattoos. They could just as easily get Orthodox Jews applying to be on the show since they also live in those neighborhoods as well.
Posted by JM | January 12, 2010 6:47 PM
i think BV is actually down with the Yids. the first poster, however, probably belongs to Sharpton's or Farrakhan's congregation.
Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 9:52 PM
The ad called for "Williamsburg/Lower East Side types." The photo is of people who fit that description, though obviously very much not in the way the ad meant. Come on, people, it's hilarious. (For what it's worth, I'm a non-chassidish Orthodox Jew.)

Cry wolf there touchy guy who doesnt allow any criticism if you happen to be a supreme thinking orthodox man of any ilk. Who owns the poorly taken care of apts in Williamsburg anyways and the DOB violations warehouses?

Well said there. Boy its so predictable some one is gonna cry racism about a post with anything to do about a Jewish topic. Being so paranoid proves theres even a Jewish right wing in the younger "arts" crowd. Sad.
Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 2:33 AM
For real. Christian, Muslim, Jewish, all extremists are fucking tweaked and for some reason they are all really into fucking little boys. Why are the most "righteous" people always sucking on baby dicks?
Ain't no such thing as God. We're just spinning around on a long Merry Go Round of bullshit. You turds need to straighten your panties out.

Oh, and what about those question marks on Sunday's text in the concert poster below? No, that isn't saving a spot for a Smiths reunion or U2 debut on the Coachella stage, it's the way that Yorke presents himself as a solo star, the marquee at his Orpheum concert had the same punctuational flourish.
