Girl Talk
Girl Talk

Who needs a traditional ball drop when countless rolls of toilet paper are unfurled into the crowd? Continuous streams of white tissue were one of the festive components that helped Girl Talk ring in the New Year Thursday at a sold-out Congress Theater during a feverish 110-minute concert that evolved into a sweaty rave.

Backed by an elaborate stage set that featured a large-as-life dollhouse complete with a furnished hall, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, the sample-based composer created an unbroken chain of pop mash-ups from the comfort of a laptop. The home-themed design and anything-goes atmosphere allowed Girl Talk, aka Gregg Gillis, to play host to what doubled as the world's greatest block party. Perched behind a table, the ex-biochemist stayed in perpetual motion. [Chicago Tribune]

a BATH house!

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2010 11:05 PM

It's a pity that a fire didn't start halfway through.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2010 11:16 PM

All of the people there had more fun on NYE than 10:19 and 11:16.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2010 11:34 PM

Instruments are so 2009.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2010 11:50 PM

i dont give a fuck about his house

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 12:44 AM

as much as I despise this man, I have to admit that's a pretty awesome idea for a show.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 1:09 AM

This house looked fucking awesome, show ruled. The lights in the house were crazy, it must've cost a fortune to produce.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 1:30 AM

i don't get it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 2:08 AM

these photos blow

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 2:15 AM

this dude licks dicks on the regular

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 2:46 AM

studio 54 did it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 2:48 AM

i hope that 2010 brings less news about this loser

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 2:51 AM

WOW 2010

Posted by converter | January 3, 2010 3:15 AM

Fuck you, spambot @ 3:15

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 3:22 AM

not surprised to see there is a shot of Bruce Finkelman in there. He is single handily killing music in chicago. His motives are: money, money, and more money. He gives two shits about supporting Chicago musicians (ask anyone who has ever played at the bottle and gets paid 75-100 for a sold out show). Hope you made your quota this year you sketchy bastard.

Posted by bob | January 3, 2010 3:43 AM

old style beer can = nice. i heart chicago.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 9:51 AM

the fact that he had a t-shirt that proclaims he is not a DJ, shows that we are right in thinking he is a DJ

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 10:39 AM

2010 and this fad is still alive? People are even dumber than i thought. 2010... no hope. Girl Talk is another sign of the fall of this country. We are nearing the end of our civilization... we had a pretty good run. Glad I got to experience some of it before it turned south.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 10:48 AM

"ask anyone who has ever played at the bottle and gets paid 75-100 for a sold out show"

Are you talking about an opening band? Or the band that was actually responsible for selling out the show? If it was the former, that sounds reasonable. If the latter... I don't believe you.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 10:51 AM

He is not a DJ... he has far less talent than a DJ.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 10:55 AM

AND he gets PAID way more than any DJ.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 11:08 AM

MASTKRFT killed it in Philly

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 11:28 AM

Girl Talk's novelty has worn thin and the people at this shows now are just a bunch of those frat/sorority types-meet-faux hipster. Supposedly he's making non-sampled music on his next album, which should prove whether he's been worth the hype.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 11:32 AM

can't decide whether this looks like hell on earth or a photographer's dream come true (provided you have the stomach to withstand the crowds, that is).

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 11:39 AM

people having fun on new years eve? well i never.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 11:44 AM

those are some fab. faux titties in the fifth pic from the bottom. nice composition.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 11:46 AM

nothing like a little puke on the steps to make it look like an unforgettable night...

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 11:56 AM

Why do you people hate fun?

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 12:03 PM

I think I would much rather attend a Girl Talk show in Chicago, than in NYC.

Having said that, I would probably have more fun at many shows in Chicago than in NYC.

Why don't I just move to Chicago?

Posted by Freepster | January 3, 2010 1:04 PM

These pictures do suck. There's only one photo of the stage setup! Anyone have anything betteR?

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 2:52 PM

well if anyone has a band or any music they want me to review read my latest blog post here www.wrongfrequency.com thanks

2010 is the year that negative, malicious (but not salicious), and hateful comments disappear from BV!!!

Happy New Year, music lovers!

Posted by Regular reader | January 3, 2010 3:22 PM

omg! did he play mashups!?!?

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 3:36 PM

I live in NYC and the crowds universally suck.

GIRL TALK SHOWS ARE FUN. UNCROSS YOUR ARMS HATERS AND GET LAID.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 4:43 PM

i saw so many boobs at the show. the show was great, but the boobs did it. i am 16 years old.

Posted by jack | January 3, 2010 4:47 PM

Dear haters,

Find me one person who was at this show and didn't have a good time. I know I had fun. There was so much effort put into this show, from the massive stage setup, the insane lights, confetti everywhere, amazingly awful karaoke in the lobby. Couldn't ask much more from a new year's eve show/party, IMO.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 6:14 PM

I totally went home with that laptop after the show.

Posted by Suzi | January 3, 2010 6:14 PM

Were they even selling Alcohol at this
Nickelodeon NYE?

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 6:30 PM

Gotta give it to this guy, he takes a lot of people's money, well done Sir.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 6:31 PM

"Gotta give it to this guy, he takes a lot of people's money, well done Sir."

it looks like he spent everything from this show on building a HUGE FUCKING HOUSE!!! amazing

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 7:04 PM

dumb music for dumb people... that's all. Don't try and tell me that it is anything else. Sure... have a good time idiots. Good for you.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 7:54 PM

BEST SHOW EVER

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 8:03 PM

Anon 7:54, you sound like a real nice guy/girl!

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 8:07 PM

I dont know about the whole laptop thing.. Ive seen artists jam from their laptop and make an effort to make a physical connection with their audience and I think that is cool; but some dude just clicking his mouse and sweatin balls is little silly to me.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 9:39 PM

"Ive seen artists jam from their laptop and make an effort to make a physical connection with their audience and I think that is cool; but some dude just clicking his mouse and sweatin balls is little silly to me."

Girl Talk makes more of an effort to have a physical connection with his audience than anyone I've ever seen. Not just laptop guys but anyone. He jumps in the audience and gets the crowd on stage with him. He goes wild for the whole show.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 10:28 PM

Tom Willis >>>>>> Gregg Gillis

Posted by George Jefferson | January 3, 2010 10:35 PM

the haters are hilarious. when night ripper came out in 2006, all the typical assholes on BV were saying "no one will remember his name by next year." it's 2010 and this guy is larger and more critically acclaimed than ever. the assholes still can't give him any credit when goes ahead and puts on one of the most epic new years shows of all time, complete with a glowing, strobing, fully furnished house on stage!

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 10:38 PM

these pics don't do justice. the house and its lights were bananas

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2010 10:42 PM

B-A-N-A-N-A-S!!!

"Girl Talk makes more of an effort to have a physical connection with his audience than anyone I've ever seen. Not just laptop guys but anyone. He jumps in the audience and gets the crowd on stage with him. He goes wild for the whole show."

He goes in the audience AND let's people on the stage? WOW! That that has never happened at any show ever, how innovative! Thankfully all he's doing is clicking a mouse, could you imagine how wrecked the music would be if he did all that and had an instrument in hand? IMPOSSIBLE.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 1:53 AM

Keep distracting the audience with flashing lights and sweating in the audience. Maybe they won't notice i'm not doing jack shit on stage.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 1:53 AM

the guy is behind the laptop 95% of the show. sasha frere jones did a write up in the new yorker outlining how he performs on the computer. it turns out that is completely live.

get over it, assholes.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 2:24 AM

why are people still writing articles about girltalk? so bizarre to me...

Posted by a guy | January 4, 2010 4:11 AM

because he's pretty damn popular. biggest pool party of the summer in brooklyn?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 4:56 AM

All of you blow balls. Gregg Gillis is punk as fuck and the fact all dude asks for is a few inches of space for his right arm to work, is one way to prove that. I agree that the crowd of 2k9 definitely differed from the 2k8 etc. crowd, but who cares? We are not 16 anymore, we can not still be right in thinking we have the power to save our local VFW scene. Let the dude be, go to a show and try REALLY hard not to act so fucking A B O V E I T.

Posted by J | January 4, 2010 5:23 AM

F ALL YOU HATERZ!!!!!!!!!!

At this moment you are:
(a.) unemployed or (b.) sitting at work....either way, Gillis is MUCH cooler than you!

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 8:49 AM

i like these photos...

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 8:57 AM

"Gregg Gillis is punk as fuck"

RIGHT!!! An ex-scientist mashing up cheesy cliche pop songs for teenage girls sure is "punk as fuck". G.G. Allin had nothing on this guy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 9:05 AM

I have that same chandelier at my dining room table from picture 28.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 9:46 AM

I think your sarcasm pretty much made you fail, 9:05. Cuz yeah, that is fucking punk as fuck. Fuck GG Allin, he tried too hard.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 12:36 PM

the best moments on night ripper are some of the most revolutionary seconds in music in quite some time. though most if not all of his fans do not understand/yet care why, the true idiots here will begin to understand when they see what happens in a few years. peace.

Posted by jakob | January 4, 2010 1:10 PM

bob from chicago... you don't know what you're talking about. do the math.

Posted by ben | January 4, 2010 2:08 PM

www.videofingers.com has the best footage of the night and will prove that is was a fun as hell evening. and i hate girltalk... check it and then try to hate...

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 3:39 PM

DO WE REALLY NEED TO SEE PUKE PICTURE? VERY PROFESSIONAL. OH WAIT, i GET IT!

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 4:47 PM

seeing these pictures (http://www3.timeoutny.com/chicago/blog/out-and-about/2010/01/girl-talk-at-congress-theater-photo-gallery/) gives reason as to why Girl Talk has gone down hill these past six months or so. Everyone in the crowd are bros and slutty girls who have no idea what good music even is, just enjoy grinding up on other people. Girl Talk was definitely fun in, say, 2007, but has now been ruined by the people who attend the concerts. I'm not bashing Gregg Gillis at all, just his horrifying fans.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 8:00 PM

Bad (and breaking) news for Anon 8pm: Welcome to life. You live in a country that elected George Bush president twice (sorta) and whose deadliest problem is overeating. Sorry for the bad news; my advice to you is just try to make the best of it - if you can not preoccupy yourself with how much better you are than everyone around you, you might just enjoy yourself!

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 9:25 PM

Hell yeah! Greg Gillis is incredible! Would loved to have been there.

Could've done without that barf on the steps, however...

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2010 11:19 PM

"Sorry for the bad news; my advice to you is just try to make the best of it - if you can not preoccupy yourself with how much better you are than everyone around you, you might just enjoy yourself!"

You are right. As depressing as that is.. you are right. Don't have any expectations anymore... just enjoy yourself. Oh... and on a related note, watch the movie Idiocracy. So poignant... Greg Gillis should have done the score.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 9:13 AM

You guys should all check out my new album that is supposed to drop later this year. It is a concept album- every song is about candy. You can dance your fucking ass off to it. Yum... candy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 9:19 AM

Yea - GT is on the way out - my ASS. Maxim is doing an article on him and should be out in Feb. He won an award from WIRED Mag.in 2007. You haters should be so lucky- he's got brains and talent and found a nitch that is making him millions. go f=yourself - loosers!!

Posted by legman | January 5, 2010 4:24 PM

While I seriously doubt that anyone is making millions in the music biz these days, much less someone who gives away his product for free on the internet, I agree with your point. I don't understand the source of all this hipster vitriol on this message board.

"You haters should be so lucky- he's got brains and talent and found a nitch that is making him millions. go f=yourself - loosers!!"

Posted by michelle | January 6, 2010 2:37 AM

GREGG GILLIS TRULY IS PUNK AS FUCK. Regardless of whether his music is or isn't revolutionary, talented, or well put together doesn't matter. It's not about that. Going to a Grl TLK show is just something you need to experience before you die, just like if the original line-up of some legendary artists ever played a show again, your fucking pretentious ass would be there for 'the experience,' even if you hate them. B L O W M E.

Posted by r | January 7, 2010 12:28 AM

^-----------HAHAHAHA... you truly are a dumb fuck. It doesn't take much too impress you. You probably think shiny things are "awesome" too.
Wait a second... has the definition of "punk" been changed without me noticing? A guy getting paid $30,000 to click cheesy pop songs on a laptop for privileged teens to dance to is "punk"?

pro-girl talk.

Posted by L | January 11, 2010 3:08 PM

dont know why so many people are rippin on this guy .. his mashups are put together well . listen to supermash bros and listen to how shitty there stuff is compared to his .. everyone just hates on everything now a days .. not cool

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2010 4:06 PM

I totally agree with 4:06... his mashups are extremely complex and his shows are dope.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 1:56 PM

Happy 2010! Nice to see everyone having a good time =) Although that shouldn't take away from the fact this guy is talentless. Don't be fooled, he's playing solitaire while his pre-recorded mash-crap plays. Lame.
