Jay Reatard @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Jay Reatard

Matador Records writes, "We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we've ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We're honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly."

NY Times confirms with a quote from Goner Records: "It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along information about funeral arrangements when they are made public.""

RIP Jay. This is a tragedy.

As previously posted in an interview I did with Jay in October, there is a short documentary on the man himself called "Waiting For Something". Yes, he was only 29 years old and already had a documentary. Check it out below...

I'm the editor of the Death+Taxes magazine. Jay Reatard is our current on-stands cover story and I had the opportunity to spend some time with him this fall.

He was a great talent and his passing is a big loss to the music world. We'll continue to celebrate Watch Me Fall as one of the best records of 2009 and remember him fondly.

He was honest and revealing in his cover story, and we appreciate the special access we were given to one of the great songwriters of our generation.

If you'd like to join us in remembering him, you can read the cover story here: http://www.deathandtaxesmagazine.com/?p=1445

Posted by Isfet | January 13, 2010 5:07 PM

This sucks alot. RIP Jay. Shocking to say the least but lets keep this in perspective...I mean not to downplay his passing or anything but 100,000 people just perished in Haiti.

Posted by jb | January 13, 2010 5:08 PM

is there anything more budget than using the passing away of a human being for ones own advertising purposes? jesus fucking christ...

RIP dude, you put on sick shows with an attitude, the way this shit was meant to be.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:09 PM

Sorry to read of this loss...wait a sec, "Goner Records"?

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:12 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:18 PM

If the news had come out about how Jay had passed than it would be posted here and everywhere. It's obviously still under investigation. Don't leave the door open for anonymous commentators to speculate about this awesome mans death.

Posted by jb | January 13, 2010 5:19 PM

i love how the editor of Death+Taxes magazine just used this as a way to promote their publication. stay classy.

I was at one of the shows he opened and I remember a bunch of shitheads yelling the entire time he played. Good to know that they were, in fact, hipster snob trash.

RIP Jay

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:25 PM

RIP to hundreds of thousands of haitians too

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:26 PM

the thought that there will be no more music from jay makes the world seem a little more bleak, rest in peace buddy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:49 PM

really interesting that on his last cover he looks like jack nicholson in the shining, who dies in the movie right after that scene in the maze...and "It Ain'T Gonna Save Me" is the first song on the record.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:51 PM

To all the people either making jokes about his death or speculating on the cause go fuck yourself you are seriously the scum of the earth.

Same goes for you Death & Taxes Editor, using this to promote your mag is disgusting.

Posted by JT | January 13, 2010 6:08 PM

news says the US might turn gitmo into a haiti refugee camp... it's about a straight 200 miles from port au prince. jay shouldn't have done so many drugs but he probably achieved all of his life goals by this point.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 6:12 PM

he won't have to worry about blowing his "legacy," which is cool, even tho he DID do a piece with beck, which suxx. Same way that Kurt Cobain avoided his 1999 chart topping duet with scott stapp.
I bet everyone in haiti is rill torn up over this amirite

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 6:14 PM

That posted documentary is very powerful stuff. Especially with Jay talking about how he won't be able to make records any longer when he's dead. So sad. This guy was genuine, funny, cool compassionate, artistic and a million other flattering adjectives that basically sum up to him being one of this past decades greatest musical acts.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 6:16 PM

he was prolific

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 6:17 PM

it looks bad when people make stupid jokes but that's part of how people respond to the terror of death.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 6:33 PM

he was a funny fucker and a sweet guy. for everyone posting about haiti, yeah we get it there are alot of things going on in the world that trump this. the garage scene is a rather intimate one. this is a guy who has played in our living room, let us borrow his amp, crashed @ our place while on tour. it is disappointing to hear any one dies. let us share our grief without your junior varsity attempt at cut and paste intellectualism.

I find the editor of Death + Taxes magazine using this opportunity to promote his magazine crass and tasteless. As a matter of fact, I have written a blog post addressing this: http://chrysler5thavenue.blogspot.com/2010/01/jay-reatard-dies-editor-takes.html

Here at Taco Bell, we'd like to join you in paying tribute to the late Jay Reatard.

He was a great talent and his passing is a big loss to the music world. We'll continue to celebrate Watch Me Fall as one of the best records of 2009 and remember him fondly.

Now, please remember to think outside the bun and buy our products.

For now you can donate some money to me over at my website and write down the buger amount for me to send it to you, which isn't a problem.

I don't know about who died today , or the tidal wave, etc, that's not what this is about, this is just about getting ready to eat some food and believing in me.

Exactly. I find it entertaining how they're visiting the blogs now to promote their publications. Everyone knows deep down that they visit places like BV to obtain content to write about and steal their ideas while struggling to maintain relevancy in a digital world. Keep up the good work Death & Taxes, and just remember that popular blogs will always be 2 steps ahead of you!

“This is very sad news,” Spoon frontman Daniel said in a statement. “Jay was a one-of-a-kind guy with an incredible spirit. He was a great rock and roller. He will be sorely missed.” (Spoon and Reatard shared a stage more than once, most recently at a Dec. 31, 2009 show in Milwaukee.)

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 8:32 PM

Jered Gummere, frontman of The Ponys and a friend of Reatard’s, wrote via email, “It’s so hard to sum up a friendship in one sentence, but the thing I will always remember is he put every ounce of his soul and every emotion he had in every song he ever wrote. I love him like a brother.”

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 8:32 PM

he was a childish bratty dickhead most of the time.

but he wrote good songs and shouldn't have died today.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 8:41 PM

RIP to Jay and thousands of others on such a sad day.

Posted by redpoint | January 13, 2010 8:43 PM

don't the best musicians die at 27?

Posted by grim reaper | January 13, 2010 8:47 PM

classic cautionary tale about what happens to former child prodigies, to over amped egos, and a people who live their lives in the closet.

he also had a lot of talent, and it didn't have to be wasted so young.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 8:48 PM

I was with him. His last words were "Fuck Haiti."

Posted by a friend | January 13, 2010 9:14 PM

Damn, was just listening to his latest a few days ago...

Posted by MotorYogurt | January 13, 2010 9:31 PM

@8:41- isn't that kind of what made him fun, though? i mean, he was a jackass, but he was an interesting person, and someone that loved making records. that's it. i mean, whatever the music was aside- you have to respect that.

this makes me sad. he was going in a real cool, surprising direction and i'm sad i won't get to hear any more.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 10:00 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 10:29 PM

Does anybody know if PopJew released a statement?

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 10:30 PM

I've never seen a more intense performer. His music helped me survive the last rough couple years. He will be missed.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 10:31 PM

Weeps bro. Seriously, intense.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 10:34 PM

I don't say this out of hate... but sincere worry.

If it comes out it was drug related I hope the community takes this message seriously.

Posted by jason | January 13, 2010 10:48 PM

of course it was drug related. at least he won't have to deal with fighting anymore people on stage

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 11:40 PM

Saw him open for Dinosaur Jr in Memphis 2007. He was out there. Someone has to be but do they all have to die young?

Posted by nkf | January 14, 2010 12:01 AM

wanna know what happened with the tire slashing. someones gotta track down sarim in liquor store. send mike wallace. On the Terminal Boredom message board, Reatard's Facebook page was quoted as saying: “Little bitches in Liquor Store just stab [sic] my tires! I will kill you.” Little else is known about what happened at this point, but Terminal Boredom user stellar-active allegedly spoke with members of Liquor Store, saying, “The story is amazing. It involves freebasing, a disco ball, $50,000 cash, and a chainsaw. I can't spoil it.”

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 12:25 AM

I hope he's in a better place where he can punch as many fans as he'd like to. RIP

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 12:31 AM

Jay was a mess. this is sad, but it's also a useful cautionary tale. Do not imitate him. He was a genius sometimes but he was not an enviable person. He treated his fans, the people who worked with him, and himself all terribly.

His life's failure is an lesson that you have to deal with your demons and not let them win. Jay was a sweet dude inside, you hear that in some of the music; he didn't have to go this way. It's his own fault that he did. If you want to celebrate him, do it by avoiding his mistakes.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 1:58 AM

why was he so obsessed with death in his music? did he know? did he wanna die?

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:03 AM

if he wanted to die he was an ass. millions of people wish they could have his talents and his life.

he was an incredibly lucky person and he should have realized it. I feel sorry for him, but don't think he was a sage, or a victim. He put himself in the position he was in, in both his successes and his failures.

It's amazing and sad we live in a time where "hip" people hate a musician because he was rude or crude or exciting and pretend that we should use his death as some sort of lesson to live healthier. Go fuck yourselves you lame assholes. Skip the part where you read pitchfork and pretend to care about music and go straight to business school. Let everyone else listen to music that really affects them even if it's ugly.

I didn't realize that Jay was playing The Music Hall of Port Au Prince!

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 3:34 AM

2:56 Even if he had been personally mean to me, the fact that a lot of great art, and especially music, comes from abrasive personalities stands. I just hate the mentality trying to stamp out anything that isn't nice.

And 3:16, you're right. "Hate" wasn't necessarily the word. I should have just said that they dismiss him unfairly. I don't think the people I was addressing think that he's a genius and neither do I.

"He was smokin coke out of a skull bong and freebasin and had 50 grand in his closet"

The big story here is that somehow Jay Reatard had $50,000.

29/M/The fucking ground

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 4:15 PM

While we're busy making a saint out of him, let's take a moment to remember that he was actually a dick. I saw the Lost Sounds play their last show because of Jay Reatard. Alicia was losing her voice and Jay was just screaming at her, onstage, in front of incredulous fans who couldn't believe what they were seeing. It was a fu**ed up scene, and it marked the end of the band.

The band I'm in has played with Jay Reatard and also with the Angry Angles. He made great music, but was always a complete asshole. Considering how many assholes I know and like, that's saying something.

A loss for music, but not necessarily humanity.

hit that nuke nigga!

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 5:25 PM

4:16, that was the sanest comment anyone's left.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 6:09 PM

jay's death is being investigated as a homicide now

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 6:48 PM

flu like symptoms = ran out of dope/oxy. your tolerance goes down, but the amount you wanna sniff/slam does not.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 7:15 PM

wait wait so he was possibly murdered? that's so fucking awful.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 7:28 PM

I remember Nardwuar going through a list of insane things Jay Reatard did, such as freebasing all night then covering his dick in oven cleaner (no lie) and ending up in the hospital with 2nd degree burns all over his peen.

I'm sure the homicide investigation is due to him buying some bunk dangerous street crank that made his heart explode.

Posted by lulz | January 14, 2010 7:30 PM

he was murdered by Dr Mario

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 10:07 PM

exactly right 7:30, youre only supposed to buy good safe street crank. everyone knows that.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 11:10 PM

maybe someone killed him for the $50 grand in his closet

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2010 12:36 AM

There are alot of ghetto brothas in that neighborhood of his in Memphis. Probably got robbed and jacked.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2010 12:36 AM

homicide? makes sense, sometimes assholes get murdered.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2010 12:39 AM

"He tried to attack us with a chainsaw after throwin around wads of money and burnin 20s and askin us if we thought he was a sellout but he was so fd on coke he couldnt even turn it on then he hit me in the face with a disco ball full of sand and cracked my nose open and kicked us out of his house after he invited us there to stay there and i was all bloody and my friends slashed his tires it sucked He was smokin coke out of a skull bong and freebasin and had 50 grand in his closet" - local band Liquor Store's run-in with Jay Reatard last week RIP.

THought this needed to be pointed out again and 4:16 said it well too. Theres way tooo much violent garbage he pulled that reminds me of a little of Brian Jonestown Massacre singer but worse. Not punk, and not to be debated how cool or misunderstood it is to be coked out of your mind etc. being as bad as the people he saw next door as a younger guy he mentions in that video.

Oh, and what about those question marks on Sunday's text in the concert poster below? No, that isn't saving a spot for a Smiths reunion or U2 debut on the Coachella stage, it's the way that Yorke presents himself as a solo star, the marquee at his Orpheum concert had the same punctuational flourish.
