man, she keeps it real....REAL INDIE!!!!

it don't go more indie than Joanna!

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 9:26 PM

of all the phony sex symbols in so-called indie rock, this is one of the oddest.

while she looks pretty in that one photo at the top, the reality is she isn't even hot by average standards.

do you guys' eyes not work when you're looking at women who aren't famous?

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 9:49 PM

i honestly think that when i walk down the street i see prettier girls than most "models"

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 9:54 PM

Joanna Newsom is beautiful. haters be gay

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 10:01 PM

agree

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 10:07 PM

barely pretty, mostly plain

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 10:24 PM

Maybe we think she's sexy because ... she's talented? She plays a freakin' harp for Christ's sake.

Posted by Cuse | January 5, 2010 10:24 PM

she's not that talented. she's boring as sin

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 10:25 PM

right up there with regina spektor in losers fawn of them but in reality they're plain janes / not particularly attractive indie rock chix department. far hotter girls at your average rock show.

just because someone does modelling doesn't really make her a model. she's asked to do modelling because someone is attempting to pander to the demographic they think her fanbase represents.

the girl would never get a job as a "real" model. she's not very pretty!

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 10:28 PM

Nice green dress. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 10:29 PM

bleurgh.

Posted by itsoktosweat | January 5, 2010 10:30 PM

"far hotter girls at your average rock show" = I suppose you don't mind that most of those girls are probably about as interesting as a bag of rocks when they open their mouths ... why don't you spend some time with one of them (I mean really spend some time, after you've had your awkward drunken hump) and let us know how it goes ...

Posted by ughshutup | January 5, 2010 11:34 PM

2010

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 11:38 PM

1134 ... ur dumb for saying that.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 11:45 PM

I'd rather bang Miranda Kerr, but I'd rather TALK to.... eh, actually I'd rather talk to Kerr, too.

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2010 11:52 PM

Good for her. I can't wait to see more new stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 12:46 AM

Lily Cole ftw.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 1:30 AM

so...

Posted by michelle | January 6, 2010 2:12 AM

"i honestly think that when i walk down the street i see prettier girls than most "models"

Kanye said it best: "We like the girls who ain't on TV 'cause they got more ass than the models!"

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 2:16 AM

actually, it's more like some women get endlessly photographed and filmed and thrown on magazine covers not because they are exceptionally attractive or exceptionally talented.... but because they are extraordinarily well connected and privileged either by birth or by fantastic luck.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 3:20 AM

Oh yeah. I would do her in a Dark Crystal sort of way.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 3:22 AM

^ true, it is about money. rich people are hot to most people.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 3:26 AM

not true. rich people are simply connected to the powers that be and are able (a.) to pull strings and get themselves chosen in the fame lottery and b.) are able to afford endless aesthetic consultation and makeovers, of both the surgical and normal varieties.

speaking of which, if Joanna's going to be all over my tv and magazines, spend the cash and get your nose did, bitch! You're already spending piles of cash on fancy clothes and hair and makeup, what's stopping you? It's not like you're not a totally phony character already.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 3:34 AM

does anybody ever really find paris hilton or tori spelling or casey johnson or nichole richie or any of their ilk to be hot in any real way? nope. they were just on the tv a lot and became sex symbols by default.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 3:41 AM

how old are you to compare paris hilton to tori spelling?? that's like a fifteen-year span between respective periods of hotness.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 3:52 AM

she is pretty and scary simultaneously. i bet she has a sweet pooper.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 3:56 AM

now that I think about it I did think Tori spelling? was hot when I was twelve and I think Paris hilton is hot now that I'm thirty

Posted by 3:52 | January 6, 2010 3:59 AM

she dont got it, she shant flaunt it.

but i'd hit it

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 4:10 AM

11:52 - high five!

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 8:14 AM

whatever...

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 9:00 AM

The face ain't anything to write home about, but makeup and airbrushing can fix that. That bod is pretty nice. Definitely hit it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 9:04 AM

Butter face

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 9:19 AM

these are the saddest comments i've yet read. congrats you miserable people!

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 9:22 AM

First Unitarian Church in Philly is so much better than any NYC venue.

We get 2 nights, you get none....SUCK IT!

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 9:23 AM

I second (or third) the Miranda Kerr comment.

Posted by Dan | January 6, 2010 9:32 AM

9:23 we are NYC and you are Philly so suck it...

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 9:32 AM

lol philly

Posted by isfet | January 6, 2010 9:32 AM

You can love her or bash her and it wont change a thing. She composes all musical/orchestral pieces, writes her own poetic and beautiful words, and of course composes on the harp and piano. So you may not like her..but for many people she is a very innovative person. She doesn't care how many people like her. You may thing shes the Indie queen of our nation, that her looks are plain, but you are all looking quite dumb for even arguing those points. They aren;t what matter. The girl is very smart and shows superb talent in many feilds, so you have to at least appreciate the art form. You are all judging her because of her looks. of course. it's the only thing people can really wrap their heads around eh? you see magazine adds and allow them to provoke an emotion from your silly minds. Just what they want from the people the advertise. Get off this site and try listening. Stop chewing on your media fixed ideals and your arguments of who has a better ass.. open your eyes to get away from the narrow minded, subliminally messaged mass public. have field day as you bicker because of what i type here now. i hope that people at least respect the comment i leave but we know thats too good to be true right? i know this will only make you mad, haha. I'm a Joanna Newsom fan and that is all. I have waited a long time to see her live and now I will.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 10:08 AM

like a tire brake reciting a poem at a renaissance fair-
Pitchfork bullshit for well to do white boys with no balls.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 10:14 AM

that armani/w mag picture is a candidate for http://photoshopdisasters.blogspot.com/

or is her head really that big compared to her body?!

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 10:50 AM

And again, comments focusing more on a woman's looks than her music. I know it's hard to type with one hand as a 15 year old boy, but how about some critical thinking.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 10:53 AM

I'd rather see Jenny Lewis or Zooey Deschannel

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 11:25 AM

10:08, not to nitpick, because yours is one of the few non-nauseating posts here, but Van Dyke Parks arranged all the orchestration on Ys.

But yes, agreed that she is easily one of the most talented artists of our generation, and it's a shame to see a thread about her turn into Hot Or Not? Isn't there a Maxim website you guys can go troll on?

The internet is such an incredible insight into what really goes on in people's minds. And it seems to mostly be racism and fears of sexual inferiority.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 1:19 PM

11:25, thanks for letting us know which celebrities you find the hottest. We all learned so much today! Lots of love, right? Lots of love!

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 1:21 PM

She's lining up a show at the Apollo Theater around the 23rd. Be patient, NYC.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 1:29 PM

Thank you 1:29...had to go through a whole bunch of chavanistic comments to find out the real info I wanted, which was to see if there would be any NYC dates. I really hope so cause like a few of you said, she is an extemely talented MUSICIAN.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 1:50 PM

I think she'd be better if she worked on her voice (maybe she has) and played shorter songs.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 1:58 PM

It's not really the point about her looks, it says more about the desperate need to have a image that is pretty transparent, and the desperation for someone who wants to be famous...I thought she was a "hippie"??

She had never heard of Van Dyke Parks, before he had agreed to do the arrangements on her album. Just a nice tactic to sell her to nerd bloggers and record collector geeks who can then get excited about her.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 2:07 PM

Andy Samburg...really? I guess I am very late on this but I thought she was married to Bill Callahan. Were they never actually married?

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 3:09 PM

"Van Dyke Parks arranged all the orchestration on Ys"

Ah, yes - Van Dyke Parks, the Sharkleberry Kool-Aid to many a musician's rich chocolate cake. His filthy artistic thumbprint is why that album was easily one of the most deeply bungled records of the past decade.

"But yes, agreed that she is easily one of the most talented artists of our generation, and it's a shame to see a thread about her turn into Hot Or Not? Isn't there a Maxim website you guys can go troll on?"

Talented, yes - but when she presents herself in the context of haute couture, or the cover of a magazine celebrating her as one of "65 beautiful people" - imagine a world so small! - naturally there's a focus on her looks, or lack thereof. We judge - and covet - what we see in front of us. Men are visual creatures. Hence these comments - and your offensive naïveté. That said, what you should really be offended at is why she hasn't been brought up on charges of crimes against humanity at The Hague for her involvement in that MGMT video.

"The internet is such an incredible insight into what really goes on in people's minds. And it seems to mostly be racism and fears of sexual inferiority."

This just in: water recently determined to be "wet".

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | January 6, 2010 3:48 PM

She wasn't trying to be a model for that W magazine shoot--they were taking pictures of ARTISTS from various fields. I think Joanna is brilliant and beautiful. Of course everyone from "Brooklyn Vegan" would get all up in arms about a woman expressing her sexuality--even the name of this website screams DOUCHE.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 4:42 PM

She's not the only person in the world playing the bloody harp. Go to the Met Opera or Carnegie Hall - there's people other than Joanna Newsom playing it. And doing it better, except for nobody talks about them being "talented" because they don't write rubbish songs about wild animals or date SNL wash-outs.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 4:56 PM

What was up with that kids video anyway? Poor kid

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 5:02 PM

She sounds like a dying cat.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 5:09 PM

i've never been a huge joanna fan, but i saw her at bam last year, and she was fucking amazing. i mean really staggeringly good, i don't think any musician could watch her play and not be impressed. her voice has gotten a lot stronger, and she doesn't hide anymore behind the twee little-kid warble thing. and whether it comes across or not in pictures, she is incredibly sexy in person.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 7:14 PM

Yeah her show at BAM was one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2010 8:02 PM

tickets for the two philly shows are actually available for purchase RIGHT NOW! must be a glitch. or just a mistake. either way, i got my two for march 20th! w00t!

8:29 tickets still left and it is GA so big whoop!

Posted by Anonymous | January 8, 2010 9:32 AM

wheee, tickets purchased for 3/20--no problems there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 8, 2010 10:15 AM

Um, yes she had. Bill Callahan gave a copy of Song Cycle to her when they were on a road trip. She fell in love with it and Bill encouraged her to ask Parks for a collaboration. When they get to L.A. she met with Parks, played her songs for him and he agreed to work with her.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 9:12 PM

Man, she needs to come to Seattle.

Posted by D.Ean | January 15, 2010 8:13 PM

When you are in uncomfortable position and have no cash to move out from that point, you will need to receive the loans. Just because that would aid you unquestionably. I get car loan every time I need and feel OK because of that.

Posted by MontoyaCharlene | February 27, 2010 8:26 AM

ohhhhhman. well i believe thats a starbucks in her hand. a little disapointing. ehhh.

Posted by ok | March 11, 2010 12:16 AM

This is a truly odd discussion. She's a great musician and songwriter. Some people might also find her hot and some not, but what difference does that make? Her core identity is as a creative musician, and she definitely is the genuine article as that. Not sure why this whole thread seems to consist of arguing over whether she's hot or not. wtf?

That Joanna girl is ok, I guess..... given that anybody is better looking than Moronda Kerr, LOL!
Can't stand Moronda's mentally-challenged-troll face. I hope she retires soon because she's not aging very well......

Marcel Proust said it best..
"Let us leave pretty women to men devoid of imagination."

if you don't think she's "hot," why did you take the time to even comment?
Let's just say, there's a tremendous difference between hot and beautiful.
