Everything in Casablancas's long, hard year as a soloist has carried a steep learning curve, from touring by himself to getting the album into stores. For example, RCA is co-releasing his solo album, yet, he says, "they're not the label I signed with. The people change all the time. They're nice, they're cool, but honestly they don't do shit." So he did most of the work through Cult Records, the label he started for Phrazes and financed himself, and it didn't turn out much better. "You have all these dreams. I still like the plan, but it was executed terribly."Julian Casablancas, Telepathe & Tanlines played their second show together in a row at Terminal 5 on Friday night (1/15). Pictures from the first night, HERE. Pictures from Friday continue below...And then there's the Strokes. Theoretically, they are putting out a fourth album. "It's coming!" he says. [NY Mag]

between the two hipster transplant openers it was a very close competition for "whitest band ever"
Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2010 12:28 AM
ha! this hipster douche thinks he's a talented rockstar. he needs to get a day job. oh, i forgot he is a trustfund baby so he doesn't need to have a job.

fuck this wanna be rockstar spoiled brat.

It's been said before but the majority of brooklynvegan commenters are the most obnoxious, pretentious, hypocritical scum of the earth.
Most of you are like the strokes' disciples. But the fashions and the way you spend your parents' money has changed just enough that you forgot how hipsterdom was 10 years ago and you mock your king.
Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2010 2:58 AM
I think what he meant by going broke was he lost so much revenue from the project itself fueling those shows. you assholes don't know anything. he is not a trust fund baby. you can't control who your parents are. Julian is successful because he fronts the greatest band of all time. he worked hard to get where he is now. you're just jealous because he's a musical genius and he got to get fucked up all the time with Strokes tours and he still turned out brilliant music. you can hate all you want but he's the greatest musical composer we've got. everyone, including ME, had doubts about this solo thing of his. he blew us all out of the fucking water. now go listen to your shitty obscure music and hate this man just because he managed to do something we all dream of doing. create brilliant, lasting music and creating an ever increasing and forever loyal fanbase.

I don't know what to laugh at more...
the outdoor lounge that really looks awesome, with some really cool people!
or
Julian Casablancas jacket, which clearly pays tribute to the Andrew Dice Clay look circa 1991

Is it just me, or is JC putting on weight? He looks like a cross between Jon Spencer and the New Luke Wilson.

Good attempt at trying to sound intelligent. See the problem is that theres an overwhelming amount of horrid bands around and the strokes happened to be the start of that scurge of bands concerned with image and their circle of friends rather than authentic music.

No most of us have jobs unlike the hipster East coast trust fund kids who followed the strokes in the first place.

DOn't you have to know how to play an instrument to be a musical genius?
Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2010 11:41 AM
anyone have the setlist?
Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2010 12:04 PM
the set list was in a different order than the first night, I think he played a couple more songs as well. The whole album + velvet snow, a new song, 30 min boyfriend, you only live once (demo), and the christmas song.
I enjoyed the first night better, seemed louder, and the crowd was more lively.

Here is a video of julian playing guitar for 4 chords of the apocalypse.. There are a couple more "related videos". This is my favorite one. the chorus at 2:30 in particular.

Um he created this album, yes, playing every instrument himself. he wrote "is this it" too. wrote means the music.
his fashion, he said he's going to hell in a leather jacket and i guess he means it

he looks amazing
Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2010 12:53 PM
I think it's the leather making him look fat. He looked pretty normal on Jimmy Fallon, when he was not wearing leather pants.

Apparently theses people who are dissing The Strokes are brain dead. Just Because they are famous, they're making money, and they dont play the kind of music you guys want. Doesnt make them a target to be down talked on. You guys are pathetic. Im not trying to start anything, but if you are here to diss a band. Keeps your stupid idiotic comments to yourself. No one gives a shit. So do us all a favor. Shut the fuck up.
