Jay Reatard in Stuy Town (more by Tim Griffin)
Jay Reatard

Hopefully this is just a stupid rumor, but in the past hour multiple people have asked me if I heard that Jay Reatard died, and at least one other gave me a semi-credible confirmation. There are also a few Twitters: Ben Todd from Glenn Danzig's House in Nashville, Brooklyn band Air Waves, and Christopher_Rex from Memphis (there was a fourth tweet by a photographer but it was deleted).

RIP Jay.

that ben todd guy also said that tila tequila was dead

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:40 PM

And yet commenters found using a picture of a Hasid for a post about Williamsburg types offensive. Wonder how much outrage & finger-wagging there will be about this thread

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:45 PM

you people are gross. wishing death? because you don't like his music and he may/may not be a jerk. what would your mother say? i bet she would be embarrassed that she's related to you and feel that she failed.

This website is the scourge of the universe and humanity. If they required registration people wouldn't post 1/10 of the shit that they post. But Brooklyn Vegan is a greedy asshole with no regard for anything or anyone and is glad to watch the world crumble while he laughs all the way to the bank.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:50 PM

Or to his weed dealer.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:53 PM

can't believe he died rocknrolling so hard. r.i.p. jaybro

Posted by randy | January 13, 2010 3:54 PM

this site would be a zillion times better if the comments weren't anonymous. C'mon Brooklyn Vegan. It's not hard. Clean up this mess.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:55 PM

Yeah man, the world is totally crumbling because BV doesn't require logins. He's probably sitting atop his throne of skulls as we speak.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:55 PM

maybe this is a good social experiment to see what would happen if we werent censored...

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:55 PM

@3:50

If you don't like what's being sold here, shop somewhere else. The rest of us basically understand that you take the good with the bad and are OK with that.

Posted by Funderburgh | January 13, 2010 3:56 PM

the comments on bv are pretty hilarious. fucking love that one guy Anonymous.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:57 PM

@3:50.... what? i'm sorry, i'm not seeing how any of this makes BV a "greedy asshole." last i checked, he provides a lot of people with a service they use and enjoy. and do bloggers really "laugh all the way to the bank"? if so, i've got to start a blog! maybe it's the commenters that are the problem?

Posted by KP | January 13, 2010 3:59 PM

I hope that you die and your parents and loved ones read things like this online about you.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 3:59 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:00 PM

I can't believe people wishing death on someone... That's absolutely disgusting, get a fucking grip on yourselves.

That said, looks like it's just a vicious rumour. I tried to check one of those tweets you posted, and it's gone.

Posted by Phil | January 13, 2010 4:00 PM

oh my gwad!

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:02 PM

No matter what you think about Jay's music or personality or whatever, wishing death on someone is really really uncalled for and juvenile.

Posted by Dave K. | January 13, 2010 4:02 PM

Sucks. Jay. RIP.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:05 PM

why not just call matador ?

Posted by anon | January 13, 2010 4:05 PM

it's sad but his music was awful.

Rgeardless if you like his music or not, no one should joke about someone dying. grow up, people. Just because some of you spend your weeks in a cubicle does not give you a right be a complete fucking dick.

This website has lots of useful information and lots of terrible little shitbags posting comments about it. Do the two REALLY need to go hand-in-hand?

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:09 PM

lol at confirmation via GONER RECORDS.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:09 PM

There's a problem with your statement @4:07

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:09 PM

didn't care for the man's music or his attitude, but man, this sucks. RIP jay.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:11 PM

I am very sorry about this. I have only seen him 2 times (most recently opening for the Pixies) and thought he was extremely talented and really enjoyed it. A terrible loss of talent.

Posted by Renee | January 13, 2010 4:12 PM

It is with great sadness that
we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard.
Jay died in his sleep last night.
We will pass along information about funeral arrangements
when they are made public.

He was the John Lennon of our generation. So much talent and so many important things to say. Gone too soon. R.I.P.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:14 PM

Personality aside, the dude could play a mean guitar. Saw him twice and put on a great show both times. RIP Jay

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:14 PM

RIP.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:15 PM

Wishing death upon others is just an expression of one's personal misery.

Sometimes that's the only way people know how to deal with that kind of thing.

I ain't hatin' on ya haters. Just explaining to some why taking J.Tard death wishes personally is a waste of energy and could put a completely happy blogger in a shit mood. Not worth it.

btw. I am not a J.Tard fan of his music and we have completely different perspectives on life (based on his interviews at least)

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:15 PM

Shame on you mutants. You are creeps of the highest order and your parents should be embarrassed.

Posted by bobby | January 13, 2010 4:16 PM

his twitter said he was sick? fuck all of you who wished this on him

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:30 PM

it is quite ironic that this death-wishing debate comes on a day when probably 100,000 people or more died in few seconds not very far away from here...

Posted by anon | January 13, 2010 4:32 PM

all the deaths in '09 are spilling into '10.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:32 PM

RIP Jay

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:34 PM

Some of the comments above are diseased beyond belief. Wishing death on a young man? Sure, he had his flaws, but also his principles, and I met him twice sober and found him to be really good bloke. His music was thrilling and meant an awful lot to many people. Snarking is one thing, but pissing all over a young man barely passed on is the stuff of fucking bottom feeders.

Posted by Darragh | January 13, 2010 4:34 PM

wow, there are a whole bunch of dicks who comment on this website.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:35 PM

Posted by Iain's Beautiful Mug | January 13, 2010 4:35 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:40 PM

Rest in Peace Jay.
Whatever your opinions about his personality, 29 is too young for anyone to die.

Maybe this display of absolute scum sucking disregard for human life and for Jays friends and family, some of who no doubt read this website, shown today may inspire BV to finally get a registration system set up. Its an awesome website with a small number of cockbags who insist on constantly posting evil or to a larger extent pointless wank who turn it in to a toilet wall rather than an platform for discussion. To those talking shit about someone who is not yet cold-you are fucked in the head. Absolutely and completely.

Posted by Niamh | January 13, 2010 4:47 PM

calm down people, there were only 2 negative comments

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:47 PM

really: has any one negative-commenter ever been affected by the goody-goods who react to them on here? its like taking a dump on a newborn baby, the baby doesn't know whats up, its just trying to stay alive.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 4:51 PM

I dont give a shit what bands get dissed, whos says 'MEH' on a daily basis, or whatever other random shit people comment on, but if you are old enough to use the internet you should also be old enough to exercise a bit of common sense when making a comment about a dude who died hours ago.
Thats a different level..
But yeah you are right, i wouldnt think it will change anything too much.

Posted by Niamh | January 13, 2010 4:57 PM

hey niamh, how much money have you donated to the victims of the haitian earthquake?

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:16 PM

probably not the millions you have 5:16

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:22 PM

Hey Anonymous

Despite the fact im thousands of euro in debt, i donated 30 euros today, which according to XE is..lemme check..is 43.20 USD.

See? i can multitask emotionally. Its a talent apparently?
Im wondering why this has shit to do with Jay Reatard dying...but do continue on whatever bizarre train of thought that comment was born out of, its slightly amusing.

Posted by Niamh | January 13, 2010 5:23 PM

"Wishing death upon others is just an expression of one's personal misery."

True.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:40 PM

5:16- That kind of casual guilt-slinging is irresponsible and shameful. If you did donate, great, but I hope it wasn't a) out of guilt, or b) so that you could passive-aggressively make others feel guilty for not donating. Also, this is a music blog, not CNN. You might want to think about what made you post that and try to fix whatever's broken, for everybody's sake.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:47 PM

"calm down people, there were only 2 negative comments"

Hey all, I'm not justifying any assholes, but it did boil down to just two quick-posting anonymous trolls (now both deleted). That's it. More telling is that the two dumb comments were followed by 60 rational, frustrated and kind ones.

There is certainly a longer discussion in all of this, but I don't want to use this particular forum to do it.

RIP Jay.

Posted by brooklynvegan | January 13, 2010 5:51 PM

He died of a heroin overdose.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 5:56 PM

hey BV,

while i completely disagree with what those commenters wrote,
you shouldn't get into the habit of deleting people's comments when they are distasteful and direspectful.
isn't there freedom of speech in brooklyn?
i myself have posted some unpopular comments dissing brooklyn's darling hipster Todd P. and it would have sucked if you had deleted them because other people hated what i wrote so much.
While i myself hate what they said about Jay Reatard, I'll defend like hell their right to say it and it NOT be deleted by the powers that BV.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 6:20 PM

Rather than complain about the douchebag comments that get deleted, you should be more worried about the legit ones that BV holds in "moderation" forever.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 7:36 PM

rest in peace jay. im sorry you died from sleeping. hope to see you soon.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 8:17 PM

this guy was the most talentless musician i have ever heard...completely unlistenable... i guess you have to be some trendster to get it but then again if your a trendster your a fraud

Posted by larry | January 13, 2010 8:34 PM

truth be told, he could be a huge asshole and he did tons of immature, selfish shit.

but he was talented and he singlehandedly made garage a living, modern genre and unshackled it from a lot of its cliches.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 8:38 PM

Larry, I bet if I talked to you in real life I would get a headache. I bet the people who know you in outside world find you very nauseating. Were not having a debate over his musical output, the guy just died you jick.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2010 10:37 PM

The man was so full of life. Definitely caught me off guard, shocked, made me sad. Shine on, Jay.

Posted by GP | January 14, 2010 12:27 AM

I'm hollowed out. The world seems bleak to me knowing he's gone. he was brilliant. too bad he didn't know that.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 12:31 AM

he was a drug addled paranoid freak who squandered huge gifts.

still, some early singles and blood visions are classic short pieces and will be remembered for a long time

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 1:04 AM

No one made any jokes about him the first three posts?
But there has been some rude remarks before when someone died. If a group or individual is still alive thats fair to critique a bit especially younger pompous kids but have some tact when someone passes.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 1:54 AM

No maybe I stand corrected when the guy lived like GG ALLIN it sounds like which I didnt know havent not seen him live or paid too much attention with a busy work week and other bands I wanted to pay attention to.
He drank a punch bowl with wine from someone whom did a wine enema with shit in the bowl?? Its on You Tube. You should stand aside with GG and probably the Dwarves too cause they will get in your face so this is different when it comes to "polite" comments.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:07 AM

Teddy Pendergrass was my hero. RIP

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:10 AM

strange he didnt seem like a smackhead. someone else had to notice his last facebook mobile upload pic from sunday??? it was of a ninja turtle with coke straw in one hand and gram of coke in the other, caption reads "Turtle party! Hit that nuke nigga"

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:12 AM

you can die from coke too, 2:12.

nobody's said what actually did it. just people guessing

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:17 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:25 PM

That kid was a faggot. Stop bitchin

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 9:56 PM

Why is there so much speculation on his drug use? Have you ever heard a good artist that DIDN'T do drugs?

People calling him a 'coke addled' whatever are the one's keeping Nickelback in business.

Anyway R.I.P. Jay

Oh, and what about those question marks on Sunday's text in the concert poster below? No, that isn't saving a spot for a Smiths reunion or U2 debut on the Coachella stage, it's the way that Yorke presents himself as a solo star, the marquee at his Orpheum concert had the same punctuational flourish.
