"Spoon didn't play a single song I wanted to hear tonight, and they still rocked their El Cid secret show. Sure sign of a GREAT band" - Marc Brunswick

Spoon @ El Cid in LA - 1/18/2010 (starbright31)
Spoon

Spoon just added a 1/21 (THURSDAY) show at Mercury Lounge which sold out faster than you can say Twitter. The venue is much, much, much smaller than Radio City Music Hall where they're headlining in March (as part of their tour with Deerhunter), and they probably only put less than half the tickets on sale (also, I'm told to stay tuned regarding more chances to get in). The occasion for the last minute gig is their new record Transference (currently streaming at AOL) which was released today (1/19). Britt Daniel can also be found causing people to wait on line at Sound Fix on 1/23.

In April, Spoon (and many others) are playing Coachella. Last night (1/18), the band played a promotional show at the small El Cid in LA. Videos and the setlist from that show below...

This is Britt's setlist from the show. From the first column, they didn't perform "They Never Got You" and "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb." And in the encore they performed "I Saw the Light," "Something to Look Forward To," and "Rhythm and Soul."
Spoon - Something To Look ForwardTo (El Cid, Los Angeles CA 1/18/10)

bands: if playing a small show, don't announce ticket sale on Twitter, or the audience will consist of people obsessively checking Twitter

I seriously went to the bathroom and missed all of this in about 5 minutes. The fact I'm not going to this is KILLING me. Please someone sell me a ticket!!

Ummm... they gave out like 75 or something at the door. Too bad BV called it 'sold out.'

"Ummm... they gave out like 75 or something at the door. Too bad BV called it 'sold out.' "

actually BV mentioned many times that tickets would be available at the door, and wrote above "they probably only put less than half the tickets on sale (also, I'm told to stay tuned regarding more chances to get in). "

Yeah... that's true, but those caveats are easy to overlook when the title contains the words 'sold out,' and the first sentence of the paragraph does, too.

IMHO, Merc Lounge didn't handle this show in a very cool way. I got there around 6:15 and got one of the 75 wristbands they were giving out that the door guy said would "guarantee" entry (yeah, he used that word). But after letting in maybe 30-40 people, the "normal people" line came to a dead halt for like 2 hours. Word was maybe the band's guest list was bigger than expected (big surprise).

A little past 10, they announced that no more people would be getting in. Of course, the door guy quietly pulled some people out of line and got them in (mostly female, again big surprise). And even after they called it, he was still sneaking people in the back door. I felt like I was at a trashy club in the meatpacking district or something, then I remembered why I don't go to those.

Of course not the end of the world that I didn't get in, but it was frustrating to have waited out in the cold for that long. Yeah I know, boo hoo.

How long did they play for?

Was it packed in there?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2010 9:48 AM

played over an hour and a half. it was crowded, but i've seen it more packed in there before. fairly comfortable.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2010 9:54 AM

They played for about an hour and a half. It was crowded, but not as bad as I expected. Definitely had some room to move around.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2010 9:54 AM

So it wouldn't have killed Mercury to let the 10 or 12 people who waited around until past 10 in then? Again, that's just frustrating.

Oh, and what about those question marks on Sunday's text in the concert poster below? No, that isn't saving a spot for a Smiths reunion or U2 debut on the Coachella stage, it's the way that Yorke presents himself as a solo star, the marquee at his Orpheum concert had the same punctuational flourish.

I took my first mortgage loans when I was very young and it helped my business very much. Nevertheless, I need the auto loan again.
