Spoon @ Prospect Park 2008 (more by Chris La Putt)
Spoon

Spoon's new album, Transference, is out January 19th on Merge. The entire album is now streaming at NPR who are also hosting the band at SXSW this year...

- For the third year running, NPR Music will present, broadcast and webcast the opening night showcase of the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference in Austin, TX, when it brings Spoon to headline Stubbs on Wednesday, March 17. The concert will kick off Spoon's U.S. concert tour in support of its forthcoming album
We're still waiting for the entire tour announcement, but their previously mentioned NYC show will be happening at Radio City Music Hall on Friday, March 26th. The openers will be Deerhunter and the Strange Boys. Tickets go on sale Saturday, January 16th at 11am.

The Strange Boys (now with ex-Mika Miko members) have a new album of their own out this February and tour dates in late Feb/early March in the Western US.

Deerhunter doesn't have any other upcoming shows that we know about yet, but Bradford's other project, Atlas Sound, has a show at NYU with Neon Indian, and one at The Bell House with Memory Tapes.

Spoon interviewed their mastering engineer Howie Weinberg about the new album ("It's really different than the last record...it's more rootsy...a little more hip hop...it's got a dirty side to it that I really like," he says). That and a few live videos of the new single, and all dates, are below...

deerhunter should be headlining

^^
Incorrect.

deerhunter >>> spoon.

spoon is the most average band in america. Middling-indie-rock FTL. At least Wilco wrote some interesting songs before they got all indie-lite.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 11:26 AM

Seeing Deerhunter at Radio City is going to be sweet. I'm sure 3/4 of the crowd are going to be scratching their heads.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 11:29 AM

the new album is pretty darn good.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 11:30 AM

Unlike Deerhunter, Spoon do not bury uninteresting songs under layers of feedback and fuzz. Not to say that they don't write uninteresting songs from time to time, but Spoon's best stuff blows Deerhunter out of the water.

au

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 11:49 AM

love to see spoon, but not with these other far, far-less worthy distractions.

deertick? deerhunter? dear me.

spoon is probably the best american band as we speak.

and arctic monkeys are the best brit band.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 11:51 AM

deerhunter need to play a date around then that isnt gonna be at $$$$ a seat radio city show.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 11:52 AM

loving the new record, perhaps better than ga

Posted by michaelways | January 11, 2010 11:55 AM

i don't know. spoon has always sounded very generic to me. the only time they appealed to me was when they began to show a slight difference in direction with "turn my camera on"

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 12:09 PM

spoon are fucking terrible. the only reason they're worthy of radio city is because rich white people love middling and un-challenging indie rock. Steely Dan would've been a more appropriate opener.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 12:22 PM

spoon = dad rock

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 12:34 PM

Hey 12:22- That sounds like a snippet from a Pitchfork review. Why don't you talk about what bothers you about the music, not the people who listen to it?

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 12:37 PM

rich white people like animal collective too
..they are just younger rich white people

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 12:41 PM

but as comments already prove - rich white people don't like deerhunter.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 12:49 PM

correction: people who dislike anything challenging in life don't like deerhunter.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 12:53 PM

Deerhunter isn't challenging. They're just boring. Microcastles was like Smashing Pumpkins covering a Buddy Holly album for chrissakes (except for "Nothing Ever Happened." That was a GNR cover.)

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 1:03 PM

If you do not like Spoon there is something wrong with you. Hear hear.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 1:06 PM

"Microcastles was like Smashing Pumpkins covering a Buddy Holly album for chrissakes"

I haven't listened to Microcastles, but now I will! That's a pretty rad description, 1:03!

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 1:24 PM

well, wow...strange boys...awesome!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 1:28 PM

I love how people champion Deerhunter as experimental. They are a rock band. Period. Nothing even remotely dangerous about their music. Look into recent music history for real examples of experimental music, folks. You embarrass yourselves when you hold DH up as left of center. . .

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 1:30 PM

I guess at ATP NY when Bradford Cox mentioned they werent going to play shows for a while was a lie

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 1:36 PM

that's a pretty asinine comment - you clearly never listened to deerhunter before microcastle came out.

Microcastle might have pushed them a bit toward the middle - but they're still no Spoon, or Feist, or Wilco (circa 2009).

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 1:36 PM

$50 for one of the most successful indie rock bands of our time supported by one of the most acclaimed indie rock bands of our time is not an unreasonable deal.

Sorry they are not playing in a dumpster somewhere in Greenpoint. To all of you complaining hipsters - their is a little something in this country called supply and demand. Basically, when the demand for something is high, you increase the demand so that those who want it have a decent opportunity to attain it.

This concept is behind the reason to why Spoon is playing at Radio City as opposed to Bowery Ballroom and they are selling their tickets for more than peanuts.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 2:19 PM

its funny how Spoon entered the decade underrated and exited it overrated !

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 2:34 PM

Moreover how will Spoon sound in such a massive venue? Their sound might not fill it well. That'll be the interesting part.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 3:09 PM

you'll like it next week

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 3:20 PM

Spoon's first recordings surfaced in the mid-1990s . . . give them a break . . . been doing it a long time. Most of you were still wearing diapers then.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 3:25 PM

3:25- Diapers were for losers.

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 3:31 PM

Venue might be a challenge. Yeah Yeah Yeah's sorta struggled with Radio City.

Posted by GW | January 11, 2010 4:28 PM

anyone positive if there will be a music hall show too? hopefully the night before

Posted by Anonymous | January 11, 2010 4:28 PM

Fuck seated concerts, Deerhunter needs to play another show.

This is an unbeatable combination, really sad that Dallas did not make the cut here, but for the cities that will be getting this great lineup, click after the jump. Included in these dates is their date on March 17th opening up SXSW on NPR’s showcase.

I opine that to get the credit loans from creditors you should present a good reason. Nevertheless, once I have got a student loan, because I wanted to buy a bike.
