St James Church

THIS FRIDAY, January 15th, our good friends at Less Artists More Condos are hosting a show at a rad new venue: the St. James Church in Chinatown.

MIDNIGHT: Real Estate (Last show before Europe Tour)
11PM The Beets
10PM Tony Castles (with secret special guest!)
9PM Beach Fossils
8PM Total Slacker
10 dollars & OPEN BAR FROM 8-9

As it says above, Real Estate heads out about a week after the show shortly after the show to tour Europe (followed by a North American jaunt with Woods).

The Beets and Beach Fossils will be touring with Christmas Island this February. Total Slacker, also on the church bill, will help those bands kick off their tour at a February 9th Cake Shop show (the tour has a few other NYC stops too). Total Slacker plays a bunch more this month too (including a January 28th show at Don Pedros with Frankie & the Outs) - dates are below.

Beach Fossils perform on Saturday, January 16th with Real Estate spin-off Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, Cloud Nothings and Nude Beach at Monster Islandl (and in March at Market Hotel with Surfer Blood).

The Tony Castles have another show coming up too. They're playing January 23rd at Union Pool with Forest City, Tough Knuckles and Regal Degal. Tony Castles have some new songs on their MySpace that are definitely worth checking out - an interesting mix of synth textures and pop songwriting.

what's so rad about a CHURCH being a fucking venue? are they gonna burn it down as part of the show?

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 11:54 AM

The Gods of rock'n'roll work in mysterious ways.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 12:23 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 12:36 PM

great, another venue for all those shitty todd p. bands to play.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 1:02 PM

wait, are you being sarcastic? cause why would it be great if the bands are shitty? sorry, i'm not a total asshole hater so i don't speak your language.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 1:17 PM

you dont have to be a "total asshole hater" to realize that total slacker is lamesauce and are getting places based on things other than their music

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 1:30 PM

This whole scene is based on things other than the music.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 1:31 PM

this whole scene is based on your mom

Nice 1:40

Posted by TXn | January 14, 2010 1:52 PM

Seems like Church shows are off the hizzy lately?

If bet StubHub will have some seats close to the Big Man...

Posted by TXn | January 14, 2010 1:55 PM

This venue is one or two blocks from Police Plaza, the state and federal courts and the municipal building. Does LAMC really expect to be able to sell alcohol w/o a license, have 4-6 hours of live music, and have the show be all ages without any law enforcement showing up? Seriously, having your diy show in out of the way Brooklyn venues is probably wise, but having them right in the police faces, maybe not so much.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 1:56 PM

since god is their co-pilot it's all going to be alright. believe!

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:11 PM

How the hell did Total Slacker get on such a good show? That band is terrible and they have the worst attitudes EVER. They're insanely demanding for such a mediocre band. TOTAL BUMMER.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:23 PM

well they are first of 4 bands playing at 8pm so not sure if they'll even play in front of many folks...

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:28 PM

the whole scene is based on my anus.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:34 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 2:37 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 3:22 PM

So wait, a promoter ironically called "Less Artists More Condos" is invading the church that served as a community bedrock for poor LES immigrant communities for over a century? And they're doing it with a band called Real Estate? What a vile excuse for culture.

Posted by Jameson | January 14, 2010 4:41 PM

good god.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 4:41 PM

how to get tickets? door only?

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 4:42 PM

Sounds totally sweet I'm definitely seeing Total Slacker and Beach Fossils and get dyunk at the open bar that entire time.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 4:50 PM

Total Slacker is blowing up obscenely fast. But they are awesome!

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 6:07 PM

Is St. James still being used as a church? if it's a Catholic church, it can't allow this in their worship area. it would have be in the parish hall or someplace outside the sanctuary. This is very confusing.

Posted by em | January 14, 2010 6:22 PM

Total Slacker=worst band but excellent at marketing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 6:24 PM

yeah, it's pretty impressive how they've boiled down todd p lofi indie rock to an easily digestible formula

they may get a song on pitchfork or something but i think theyre still too boring to ever really get anywhere

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 6:53 PM

1:56 raises a very good point. I can't see this DIY-style place going far.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2010 7:01 PM

this show is going to be incredible, from start to finish. so psyched

haters to the back
slackers to the front

You can say that again. And Anne Frank you make me laugh and I hope your not serious there..to the front mister. Anne your too psyched there sister.

Posted by Brimley | January 15, 2010 1:29 AM

not that they need any defending but Total Slacker are one of the nicest bands I've dealt with. They give one of the most fun and energetic sets I've seen. And their songs are great too!

Posted by MvsH | January 16, 2010 5:09 AM

The show was really fun. I know Total Slacker personally and Tucker and Emily are some of the nicest people I know and just because they choose to play simple fun music doesn't mean they're not talented musicians. Music isn't all about sweep arpeggios and neck breaking riffs...damn metal heads

Posted by Mikaru | January 16, 2010 2:01 PM

I saw theyre 1st show as a duet.t.slacker's show last night as a full group blew real estate out of the water!!!! they have 5x more stage presence then those bands...and
TONY CASTLES ROCK!

I wanted to read more about the condition of the church after the even and what the pastor had to say, but could find no commentary in that regard other than the email from Bridegroom Press.

Am I to understand that a Roman Catholic church was allowed to hold a rock concert inside of a consecrated Roman Catholic church?

Has the Roman Catholic church of New York City totally lost their mind and their soul?

Posted by Jeannon Kralj | January 25, 2010 2:01 PM

WAIT a MINUTE!!! Is this an article about a Roman Catholic Church holding a "Rock Concert" inside of the church itself? Not only that, but with an open bar? Is it any wonder we are being judged!!! This is one of the most INSIDIOUS articles I have ever read, with the exception of the pedaphile priests. May God have mercy on us all.

Posted by Nancy | January 25, 2010 9:00 PM

Cancel the show.

I think this is totally out of line!!!!! Mr Walter should not have allowed this to take place. He is no FATHER!!!!! A real follower of the lord WOULD NEVER DO THIS!!!! What a disgrace he needs to get his head examined! This is a total insult to every Catholic never mind every member of the St James parish.....what is this world coming to???? A rock concert on the alter of a CATHOLIC CHURCH??? Charging $10 to enter a place of worship and never mind SELLING ALCOHOL. I am totally appalled by this behavior. He calls himself a father he is definitely not a follower of the church and never mind an example for our youth. He has the NERVE to baptize children??? To preform mass?? The school has a church hall this should have NEVER taken place in the church and never mind the alter!!!! He deserves to be taken away and fed to the dogs!
