Ticektmaster Nation

The U.S. Justice Department approved Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc.'s merger with Live Nation Inc., while imposing conditions on their plan to create a new music- industry power.

Under terms accepted by both companies, Ticketmaster must license its software to AEG Live, its largest customer. Ticketmaster also must sell its Paciolan unit to a Comcast Corp. joint venture or another suitable buyer. The new company also will be banned for 10 years from retaliating against any concert site that signs a ticket-sales contract with a competitor.

The $889 million merger "will change the landscape of the live entertainment business," said Allen Grubman, a New York- based music industry attorney whose clients include Madonna, Elton John and U2. "Artists are focusing tremendously on live performance because that's an area where there is still a lot of money to be made." [Business Week]

Crazy.

"will be banned for 10 years from retaliating against any concert site that signs a ticket-sales contract with a competitor"

What exactly does that mean?

LiveNation is a joke in this town. BP doesn't have anything to worry about.

Posted by Coco | January 25, 2010 6:39 PM

Yes! This will finally give Live Nation a fighting chance against the evil Todd P corporation.

why is American Pop culture so far off base of what is actually good.

Is it different in other countries?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2010 9:04 PM

Does this mean you're going to finally stop posting all those Ticketmaster links?

"this is horrible. all the horrible news this week has been horrible. corporations, corporations, corporations..."

Yeah, those damn corporations that provide jobs. Damn them. Maybe we should find some more ways to punish them so they can cut some more jobs.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 1:30 AM

^

The only decent jobs most corps give in the NY area are for the upper echelon of employees. Everyone else gets fucked. And the CEO's who lose millions of dollars get fired and then walk away with million sin compensation. It is time for some parity.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 1:41 AM

business provides jobs, corporations don't necessarily.

small business employs more people in the US than than the big publicly held corporations do.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 1:47 AM

Yaaaay, hopefully this will bring about more "convenience fees"...I know I'm excited.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 8:25 AM

libertarian corporate apologists...

we've heard enough of your bullshit. corporations are not generating US jobs any longer and it's plain to see. sorry your laissez faire "theories" haven't worked out any better than the previous century's state command socialism. just because ayn rand's ideas were simple and elegant to your ears doesn't make them right.

"As always, there's only one place to point the finger: the Jews."

As always, you can expect some pussy dipshit coward to hide behind the internet and make offensive comments they wouldn't have the balls to say in public.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 9:58 AM

I can really only see this benefiting Live Nation if Ticketmaster somehow has a secret army of decent booking agents that nobody knows about...

Posted by Todd Pee | January 26, 2010 10:06 AM

@Anon. 9:58: I, for one, took that comment as satire.

Does anyone know where one can find an intelligent concise analysis of what this merger really means? It would be nice if this site did such a thing instead of re-printing a few lines from a press release.

10:54 wins this thread

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 1:36 PM

eventually live nation will own everything except for punk rock shows in church basements.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 1:54 PM

fuck these corporations. they aren't creating any jobs. their all about money as always.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 2:02 PM

2:02, if it wasn't for corporations you wouldn't have been able to make that post, wear the clothes you wear, or listen to the music you listen to. EVERYTHING WE DO has a relationship with one corporation or another. Grow up and get used to it. Or watch a lot of survivor man and man vs. wild and learn how to live in the middle of nowhere.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2010 2:13 PM

2:13-what you just wrote is exatly the problem.

Though my original comment was satirical (spot on, 10:24), if you knew me, you would know that I do not hide behind a computer to Jew bash. I tell my Jew friends on a daily basis how much they suck. Unfortunately, I can't really go out on the street and reply to a Brooklyn Vegan thread so it is what it is. If we were to bump in to each other in person I'd gladly tell you how much you suck for being a Jew.

Trying to cause trouble by bringing up something that has nothing to do with music, on a website devoted to music isn't satire. So if we were to bump into each other on the street, I'd be glad to tell you how much of a pretentious fuck you are for making offensive comments and using satire as an excuse. You're not Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. You're not even the lowly Jay Leno.

I would tell you to go fuck yourself, but judging from your inflated sense of self-importance, you probably already have.

This is how I know ticketmaster has lost its fucken mind. An email I recieved from them just tonight

"Beat the Rush for Tickets to See The National"

Oh my goodness. So funny. Beat the Rush! Beat the Rush to see the National!

Oh, and what about those question marks on Sunday's text in the concert poster below? No, that isn't saving a spot for a Smiths reunion or U2 debut on the Coachella stage, it's the way that Yorke presents himself as a solo star, the marquee at his Orpheum concert had the same punctuational flourish.
