Hi, my name is John. I'm joining Brooklyn Vegan in 2010 for a new column called THE TOFU HUT.

So who am I? And what's a "Tofu Hut"?

Way back in 2004, I started a blog called The Tofu Hut. The Hut (along with Matthew's Fluxblog, Noz's Cocaine Blunts, O-Dub's Soul Sides, Sean's Said the Gramophone and some half-dozen others) was among the first of the so-called 'MP3 blogs'. I rode the attention from my blog to PR and marketing jobs for Manhattan music venues. I've been doing that work for the past five years and, perhaps unsurprisingly, less and less blogging; when you work at the chocolate factory, you're less likely to eat candy at home, you know? Over the past few months though, I've been feeling the old urge to start writing about music again. I keep hearing exciting sounds (sometimes at my day job, sometimes just around the city or on the internet) and wanting to share them with people again.

BrooklynVegan and I first got to know each other over our mutual crush on Leslie Feist, back in her pre-iPod/Sesame Street days. I dropped "BV" a line in December to ask if he'd be interested in having me scrawl my words and spread my gospel on his extra-popular webnook and he's graciously invited me into the fold. I'm very much looking forward to bringing you all sorts of music and noise in 2010, along with interviews and some surprises. My tastes are pretty far-ranging and I promise I'll introduce you to something you haven't heard of before we get too far into the year. You may even like it!

I'll kick off this shindig on Monday with a few overlooked gems from 2009. See you then!

Hi, my name is Anonymous. I'm joining Brooklyn Vegan in 2010 for an old column called DOUCHE CHILLZ.

So who am I? And what's a "DOUCHE CHILL(Z)?"

Some speculate I'm a failed musician, wallowing in obscurity and slinging shit indiscriminately at those more successful than myself. Others have posited that I spend my days in a dusty old cubicle, unsatisfied both professionally and sexually (just as my "gf!"). Or maybe I'm just a pretentious college student with absolutely nothing worthwhile to contribute? I'll never tell. ;)

DOUCHE CHILLZ will be published daily in the comments section of every single post on BV. In my column, I'll be making newcomers feel unwelcome, insulting the recently deceased (as well as their friends and loved ones), insinuating the word 'MEH' into anything and everything (lol) and generally making everybody feel miserable about things they love. Fuck you and have a shitty 2010!

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2010 3:40 PM

You MEH even like it.

There, fixed.

Finally: let's just give the PR people direct access to the content and cut out the middleman.

"Finally: let's just give the PR people direct access to the content and cut out the middleman."

ha, he is not a PR person.

Posted by brooklynvegan | January 15, 2010 4:15 PM

.... despite how he described his past 5 years.

He has spent time doing marketing/PR for some venues though. Either way, his work will never collide with his writing.

Your comment fails to understand there an overload of average bands in NYC with big attitudes. The other hand yes we could do without the rude comments when some one passes that for sure, minus the critique if they were an out of control drug addled person.

your ip address probably isn't anon, doe

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2010 6:33 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2010 11:55 PM

I liked your blog, you've written about good and different music. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for letting us know you liked Feist before it was cool to do so. For a second there, I was worried that you might be unqualified to blog. But clearly your credentials are in order. Welcome aboard. We are all looking forward to finding out what is hot in marketing and PR!

But yeah, just for the record: I won't be pushing music on the Hut that I'm not personally into... and I think when you see what I have on the docket, you'll at least agree that I'm not hyping this stuff out of anything but love.

Posted by john | January 16, 2010 11:48 AM

I want all you PR & marketing bashers to answer me this: If a band performs in a forest and there's no one around to listen, does it make music?

Posted by T-Roll | January 16, 2010 1:32 PM

mr tofu
in your old feist interview, you spelled jason collett's name wrong. just saying. he has a new album coming soon. write about him and ask him how tall he is, i'm dying to know.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2010 2:39 PM

As most writers do, you sound awfully full of yourself. I'm pretty sure this will fail.

Thanks anyway

OK OK OK ... we have the vegan thing and I love animals and all, but let me just weigh in on this tofu hut name. Esp if you are of the male persuasion you should not be eating tofu. For a few reasons. Reason the first ... soybeans are the new corn in terms of government subsidies and genetic modification. This commodity is not the panacea that it claims. It raises your estogen levels so in case I haven't told you lately, your breasts look really nice John. Don't promote tofu. I'm taking a firm stance on this one.
