Chuck Schumer @ Grizzly Bear Pool Party in 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)
Chuck Schumer

Today (2/1), United States Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that officials have reached an agreement and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that ensures that extremely popular Pool Parties will return in 2010...with a free 8 concert series.
A news release from Chuck Schumer's office confirms that Jelly NYC Pool Parties will be held again at East River State Park (aka the Williamsburg Waterfront) in 2010. The series' second year at the park was called into question last fall - since then, Chuck Schumer's office (most vocally) and other parties involved (Jelly NYC, Open Space Alliance, NYS Parks, NYC Parks and others) have worked out an agreement to keep the shows at the state park. The full release is below...

"SCHUMER SAVES POOL PARTY CONCERT SERIES..."

Today, United States Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that officials have reached an agreement and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that ensures that extremely popular Pool Parties will return in 2010. The JELLY Pool Parties, a very successful free summer concert series started in 2006, were held at East River State Park in 2009. Unfortunately, there were some indications that the Pool Parties may not return for a 2010 season. No events had been scheduled as of November, so Schumer stepped up to see the Jelly Pool Parties remain a fixture next summer. Schumer, a Brooklyn native who attended two of the Pool Parties this past summer, was struck by the quality and popularity of the concerts and the enthusiasm of the crowd. Schumer recently met with OSA and NYS Parks Department and reached an agreement so that the Pool Parties will return in 2010 with a free 8 concert series. New York City Parks Commissioner Benepe also played a key role.

"Summer in Brooklyn without the free JELLY Pool Parties simply would not have been the same and I am beyond thrilled to see that they will return in 2010," Schumer said. "I have truly been inspired and energized by the enthusiasm behind these outstanding concerts and am proud to have worked so hard on behalf of concert-goers everywhere to see that they return. I'd like to thank OSA, NYS Parks, NYC Parks, Borough President Marty Markowitz, Assemblyman Joe Lentol, Senator Daniel Squadron and Councilman Stephen Levin for working so hard to see that the Pool Parties return in 2010. I can't wait to ride my bike this summer to the East River State Park to rock out at these concerts once again."

The Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA), a not-for-profit working to expand open space in the community, manages the summer concerts. "We are grateful that Sen. Schumer has taken an interest in the Williamsburg Waterfront Shows," said OSA Chairman Steve Hindy. "We are delighted to partner with NYS Parks in providing the summer concert series. It's a wonderful feature of life in North Brooklyn, and it contributes significantly to the improvement of existing parks and development of new parks in the area."

"We are very pleased that all our partners have worked so hard to continue the concerts in East River State Park. We look forward to a great summer," said Rachel Gordon, Regional Administrator for NYS Parks.

The pool parties have become the biggest summer concert series to hit New York City in decades. They were originally held at the McCarren Park Pool but were recently moved to the East River State Park due to construction. Within just a few years, the concert series experienced a huge jump in popularity, with audience traveling from across the country, and even the world, to attend the concerts. The 2009 season featured 8 weeks of free performances featuring Mission of Burma, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, Dan Deacon, Deerhunter, Simian Mobile Disco, The Black Lips, and Girl Talk.

In August, Schumer, took the stage on the last night of the Pool Parties and pledged to the cheering crowd that they would be back on the waterfront in 2010.

Jelly co-founders Alexander Kane and Sarah Hooper agree, "We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all parties involved including OSA and NYS Parks, but especially to our great Senator Chuck Schumer, who went above and beyond to see the free shows continue for a fifth straight year."

Since Schumer spoke to the excited audience, he has led the fight to save the JELLY Pool Parties. Schumer has met with the Open Space Alliance, and local elected officials to work on a deal to ensure the Pool Parties return to the East River State Park next year. Schumer announced today that the Pool Parties will return to the East River State park in 2010 for an 8 concert series.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:34 PM

fuck east river state park.

Pool Parties have been dead since 2008. You can put them someplace else and give it the same name... but, as anyone who went there last year can attest, it ain't the same!

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:34 PM

The Dead are playing last show Labor Day weekend. Confirmed.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:34 PM

Eww.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:37 PM

Between the teenagers from the NJ suburbs and disaffected, disinterested Brooklyn 20-somethings, this ends up being a net gain of what, 3 or 4 votes for Schumer?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:39 PM

oh yes, let it alllllll rain down upon us now in the comments section.....

yah man FUCK the man, FUCK the park, FUCK the shows, they are DEAD, fuck it.

god, i am always fascinated that i seem to be 2 years too late to EVERYTHING. thanks crusty punk @3:34!!!

smarmy assmunch.

Posted by non-jaded | February 2, 2010 3:42 PM

I mean, you can enjoy it, but just be aware that it used to be a lot better.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:45 PM

Does this mean the Daft Punk show won't be at Yankee Stadium?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:47 PM

I went to a few pool parties when it was at the pool. They were pretty good. I went to a few of the pool parties when it was not at the pool. They were pretty good.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:49 PM

Bruce Springsteen is going to open the season I hear and Naplam Death is going to do a co-headlining stint with Tom Waits. Sorry.. I was dreaming again, It'll probably be a bunch of flavor of the moment indie stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:50 PM

when is the lineup announced?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 3:55 PM

That's nice Schumer, thanks.

Now step aside and let another citizen work in the public servant role as US Senator for NY State. Thanks for giving us your time -- now move on.

Posted by term_limits | February 2, 2010 3:57 PM

Free? That is soooo not Tegan $75and$75 Sara

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 4:17 PM

hey- let's guess who's going to play this summer... i'll start:

- sisters
- beach house
- neon indian
- pavement
- she & him

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 4:17 PM

yes 3:45, i will TRY to enjoy the as-yet-unnamed lineup and PRETEND that it's as good as....what, 2007? 2008?

i experienced both locations so don't worry, i will always have those memories. i will hang on to them dearly.

oh and just remember, when you listen to the new whatever-the-fuck-it-is-that-you're-listening-to-right-now, The Beatles used to do that a lot better too.

Posted by non-jaded | February 2, 2010 4:22 PM

grizzly bear now have a spot to do coke out in the open, thanks chuck!

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 4:22 PM

I'm only in favor of term limits for Republicans, Chuck can stay as long as he likes...

@4:17 great call on beach house and neon indian. which is funny, though, because beach house opened for grizzly bear last summer, and the neon indian lead guy's other band, vega, also did.

i'm feeling the xx? girls, maybe? sleigh bells?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 4:24 PM

my 6 inch dong will be there looking to slay some hipster tang.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 5:30 PM

You forgot about Diarrhea Planet.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 5:32 PM

There's sure to be a shitstorm of negative commentary on here no matter what the lineup is. BV commenters are nothing if not predictably juvenile and knee-jerkedly contrarian...sort of like Republicans, only even more irrelevant.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 5:41 PM

Health Care: No. Gay Marriage: No. Climate Change Legislation: No. Pool Parties: YES! Thank God they are getting something done in Washington.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 5:43 PM

Well he's pleasing a good number of inherently rich voters.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 5:46 PM

Pool parties, but no Health Care reform. Stupid hipsters are always fucking stuff up for the rest of us.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 5:48 PM

what if 'health' played? would that make this situation better?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 5:55 PM

what about clientele? jeff the brotherhood?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 5:57 PM

oh. so now schumer is the new obama? because of course 5:48, it was a toss up: the 2010 pool party concert series or healthcare.

Its too bad the whole state of the union address was about what hipsters like. I esp liked the part where schumer got up, announced he was the president and made his platform based on what todd p wants

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:04 PM

Hey Mr. 6:04, it's called satire. If anyone actually takes my earlier comment seriously then they're dumb, or they REALLY REALLY hate hipsters and blame them for everything real or imagined.

Posted by 5:48 | February 2, 2010 6:07 PM

This site is fucking ridiculous

Posted by James | February 2, 2010 6:07 PM

there's no way pavement will play this

it would create some sort of weird hipster vortex and the universe would implode

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:14 PM

Can't you see what is happening here folks? Just like the Soviets, the Communists in charge of this country will slowly take over the arts. This is not a conspiracy theory, I'M JUST POINTING OUT FACTS.

Notice this is a "pool party" but there is no pool. Maybe THEY really are looking for us to pool together - hmm? What does that remind you of...collectivism! COMMUNISM!! SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR FREEDOM!!!

PELOSIREIDACORNMARXOBAMA!! I NEED A FUCKING CHALKBOARD FOR THE CONNECTIONS, SO MANY CONNECTIONS!!!

Posted by Glenn Beck | February 2, 2010 6:15 PM

The Drums will set up a residency, playing every weekend. And possibly every weekday.

Posted by Señor | February 2, 2010 6:16 PM

i heard that the jelly folks had their parents donate a lot of money to schumer, thank fucking god for trustfund assholes

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:16 PM

now i really hope pavement plays :)

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:19 PM

my 6 inch dong would never play this concert series.

Posted by Glenn Beck | February 2, 2010 6:25 PM

I'm glad Glenn Beck has gotten involved on BV!

Posted by olbermann | February 2, 2010 6:31 PM

Pavement isn't going to play.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:41 PM

Hopefully the Schumer Seat will go the way of the Kennedy Seat.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:43 PM

SHORT WAVE WARFARE!!! please

Posted by TXn | February 2, 2010 6:45 PM

Really? You want Schumer to die? What compassionate conservatism. nice, real nice.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:45 PM

the real pool parties are in Catholic churches this summer

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:48 PM

No, I want him to lose. If you kept up with the news you'd know that the fact that the seat was called "the Kennedy Seat" was a big issue in Massachusetts.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:49 PM

no pool

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 6:58 PM

Hey 6" dong guy, I'll let you cum on my tits at the show!

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 7:03 PM

You whore. Have some respect for yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2010 7:17 PM

It's a good thing that tool Schumer doesn't have any important issues to address.

...and remember ladies - SCHUMIE DON'T LIKE BITCHES!*

"i heard that the jelly folks had their parents donate a lot of money to schumer, thank fucking god for trustfund assholes"

i'd bet money on it. trustfund money. how else do you pay for super expensive shows like this anyhow without LOTS of LARGE sponsors? and if last year's godawful website and crappy poster logos were any indication, they couldn't have had any large sponsors last year. those logos were a joke. barely visible.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2010 1:06 AM

chuck shoemur is so hot

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2010 2:03 AM

Do you even live in NY? Did you even go to any of the shows last summer? There were banners for companies like Gibson Guitars all over the park! Get a clue, Wisconsinite!

Oh, and what about those question marks on Sunday's text in the concert poster below? No, that isn't saving a spot for a Smiths reunion or U2 debut on the Coachella stage, it's the way that Yorke presents himself as a solo star, the marquee at his Orpheum concert had the same punctuational flourish.
