Animal Collective

Animal Collective & Danny Perez: Transverse Temporal Gyrus...For the Guggenheim's 50th Anniversary, the band Animal Collective has collaborated with artist Danny Perez on a site-specific performance piece that will transform the museum's rotunda into a kinetic, psychedelic environment. Transverse Temporal Gyrus will feature original recorded music composed specifically for the work along with video projections, costumes, and props, rendering the band members and performers into intense, visual abstractions. During the evening, guests are invited to freely explore the space in order to fully immerse themselves in the environment created by Animal Collective and Danny Perez.
The event will happen at the Guggenheim on Thursday, March 4th. Tickets go on sale to museum members Thursday, February 18th at 10am. Tickets for nonmembers go on sale Friday, February 19th at 10am.

Danny Perez is the visual artist who worked with the band on their ODDSAC film, which is coming to NYC's Visual Arts Theatre on Tuesday, March 2nd and (added second night) Wednesday, March 3rd. Tickets to the new night's 6:30pm & 8:30pm screening are on sale.

More details on the new installation and the ODDSAC trailer again are below...

ODDSAC TRAILER

The band describes their inspiration [for the new Guggenheim piece]:

One of the things that you notice almost immediately in the jungle are the birds; so many different sounds coming from so many different directions. Are they communicating to each other? What are they saying? Does each variation serve a purpose? Why are there repetitions? Is there a pattern or is that just your imagination? If you don't know the first thing about bird songs, these questions can rack a brain for days. The jungle seems louder than most New York apartments but its symbiosis makes it subtler if not more pleasing to foreign ears. The longer you sit awake in bed listening at night, the more you hear. It brings to mind Jane Goodall hanging out with chimpanzees in Tanzania and how she noticed them reacting to distant or inaudible sounds that at first she couldn't hear, but as her ears adapted to the environment after months she began to hear them too.

But as the environments around us change quickly, as people encroach more and more on land where only select symbioses occur, we wonder how this will change the sounds around us and how this alters the way we hear things and react to them. As New Yorkers we are all familiar with the everyday noise around us--the car alarms, the subway trains braking, the music in bars--so familiar that sometimes we drown them out. But then do we not realize how these sounds are affecting us? How they make us feel or act? With this in mind we wanted to create an environment where people could take some time to listen to other kinds of sounds and get away from those familiar sounds of the city. Keeping in mind the birds of the jungle, we've created an array of sounds with Animal Collective's music that is seemingly random...or is it? We invite you to come take some time out and sit with us. As time passes it is our hope that you will wonder if you are hearing songs or patterns or maybe simply hearing more. The visual work of Danny Perez has been incorporated to turn the environment of an empty museum into a more mysterious hideaway. The core elements and colors are worked into the piece in order to unite this room of sound with the inside of your brain. We hope you enjoy.

Thanks for joining us.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 6:06 PM

They're definitely already on sale to members on that site, even though it says that they won't be available until tomorrow at 10am. I just picked up two and got an email confirmation.

Hopefully this won't be a giant mistake.

^^^not sure what you are expecting, but for your sake I hope it's worth it. Generally Animal Collective "ART" shows/exhibits/installations, etc blow chunks and are a lot of drone and art school videos

6:22, Tino Sehgal - definitely one of the most original exhibitions i've ever seen, especially after becoming jaded working for a couple major art magazines

That animal collective statement about their inspiration for the piece is the most annoying bullshit thing I've read in ages.

Can someone muzzle these smug idiots yet?

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 6:47 PM

this sounds really creative and great, hope it is worth it...6:47 needs a massage or something

Does anyone know where in the Guggenehiem they will be playing? I'm just concerned that the egos on these overrated tools won't be able to fit inside.

One can only image the riot that will ensue from angry AC fans.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 7:51 PM

im saving up for when total slacker plays at the gugenheim

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 8:32 PM

Any AC fan in NYC must be crazy to pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Every time I see a show at the Guggenheim it sounds like my balls slapping a vag in an echo chamber.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 9:00 PM

all the people in here that are bashing animal collective are hipsters, fucking annoying.

huh?

HIPSTERZ YOU SAY?!?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 10:23 PM

Am I the only person around who finds AC boring, repetitive and way, way, way overated?

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 10:52 PM

Nope, you are definitely not alone. I used to really enjoy some of their songs, but then I realized it was the same 4 chords over and over and over and over again.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 11:00 PM

I've seen them live. I wanted to fall asleep by the 3rd song. Slightly interesting at first, then just plain dull. It was also a sausage fest which made it even worse. Anon 8:37, I hope that is sarcasm!

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2010 11:23 PM

What a bunch of bullshit artists. Pretentious crap.

was it really just last year when bv commenters were bestowing accolades on animal collective as saviors of music?

who's taken anco's place?

Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2010 1:09 AM

its all about being jaded about your surroundings and also being jealous of people who are doing things that are more exciting than your blog entries; on that note I bought tickets for the oddsac screening and im stoked

This Progress indeed.

Posted by Anonymoose | February 18, 2010 9:59 AM

Should I save my acid or X for this event?

Posted by Regular reader | February 18, 2010 12:32 PM

This might be more of an Amyl Nitrite kinda show.

Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2010 12:49 PM

theyve been doing shit like this for years just on a smaller level. you really think theyd turn doing an installation at the guggenheim? youre retarded.

their egos? the guys from animal collective are some of the most humble people out there. if you read or have watched any interview with them youd realize that. and if anything theyd seem more pretentious if they did turn it down, and the same people bashing them now would be saying "oh they probably think they're too good for the museum."

also, if youre not into droney repetitive stuff then why are you listening to animal collective anyway?

and why does something automatically suck just because you dont like it? i cant stand people sometimes.

JESUS, 2:42 needs to MELLOW , smoke a joint and listen to some ANCO bro

has anyone tried to buy them as a non-member? It's already 10:18 and there is still no button up for that. Can you just buy it though the member button? Annoying.

Posted by dbk | February 19, 2010 10:19 AM

They are going on sale at Noon instead.

Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2010 10:20 AM

who told you that?

its 10:29 now, all tickets are sold out, both members and non. wtf.

Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2010 10:29 AM

they never even went on sale today.

Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2010 10:33 AM

thats the biggest bunch of bullshit i've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2010 10:35 AM

I bought a pair through members-only button and it worked without entering the membership number.

Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2010 10:35 AM

Geologist is the best at pushing buttons. $30 button pushing good. hope you booked it.

So lame, not able to get tickets... started reloading the G-heim site around 9:55 every min or so. And never got the link, then around 10:30, a new post pops up saying all tickets were sold out. I wrote an email to the sounds@guggenheim.org but received no response. LAME.

Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2010 11:31 AM

I can't believe they sold out so fast. I was going to wait a few days but I guess not. Hopefully they add a second night, like with ODDSAC. but my hopes can only go so far.

Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2010 12:06 PM

They sold out so fast because most people bought tickets yesterday without being members. Whoever set this up were idiots.

3:51, yeah there is a very sad reason why Piggy is not in the lineup (RIP) The new guitarist pulls it off perfectly. The challenge will be if he can write, if they choose to make a new album. Piggy was the creative soul of that band and wrote almost everything....

I was checking out setlists from other nights on the tour, they change it up. Some cities got Ravenous Medicine, Experiment, The Prow, Nothingface, Brain Scan, a few others.

It looks like there are a few set parts of the show, and a few spots where they rotate songs.

Wonderful post and the location is beautiful and elegant in design and information and everything>>> to Favorites
i hear there's a show at shea stadium with so so glos, static jacks, and shapes.

Guggenheim billed it as a performance piece and it was just an installation. Resultingly, the crowd simply waited for the "show" to start, limiting anyone's ability to freely explore the space (the ground floor was packed with indian-style seaters, and the balconies were lined with people holding onto their spots like grim death.

i thought it was pretty amazing that these bands brought everyone to their feet in Carnegie Hall. Everyone was there with good vibes celebrating an amazing culture that embraces compassion and tolerance. I have no complaints other than the 2 hipsters behind me who had a comment about everything that was wrong with the venue. Why go?
