"Been waiting outside the Varvatos Bowery store for six hours now. This party better be fun :(" - Nat Thomson

photos by Nate "Igor" Smith

Varvatos

Alberta Cross did in fact play the fashion week party at the Varvatos Store on Thursday night, but it ended up that they were only the opener for a much larger band. That band was Axl Rose and friends aka "Guns n Roses". Packed when it started, people waited for hours for the headliner to appear in the store that used to be CBGB. Over 90 minutes later, after Axl and band had finished a set of seventeen songs to the lucky (and fashionable) people in attendance (like Sebastian Bach and Kevin Bacon), the room was less than half full. People apparently couldn't stay awake - not because of the performance, but because of the (type of crowd it was and the) long wait time followed by the late ending. The show ended around 2:45am.

Mr. Brownstone puts on a better GnR show than GnR does.

Where's the JD?

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 5:40 AM

MICHELLE YOUNG: I'm the subject of the song "My Michelle." I was driving Axl to a gig and "Your Song" by Elton John came on the radio. I said that I wished somebody would write a beautiful song about me. But, you know the song. At the time, I didn't care because I was so fucked up, but what it says is all true: My dad does distribute porno films and my mom did die.

GN´R FOR EVER!!!!

the best lineup in history!!!!!!!!!!

uuuuuuhhhhhhhh

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 9:37 AM

Every time the new G n R does something its one more nail the coffin for a Replacements reunion.... is the money that good Tommy ??

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 9:45 AM

fantastic band! ive seen this line-up live and they do the GNR name proud. this acoustic set sounds like a real treat. im so jealous of those who were there!

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 9:46 AM

love the irony of the 'fake' Guns N' Roses playing for a 'fake' hipster designer in the shell of what used to be CBGB's! So sad, in so many ways...

Posted by brian roach | February 12, 2010 9:48 AM

A Replacements reunion may be your wet dream... but what makes you think it's Stinson's, too?

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 9:49 AM

this band has been finished for 15 years.

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 9:53 AM

the replacements blew/blow and so does the goo goo dolls. au

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 9:59 AM

Did anyone see Metric last night? Emily looks like hell...way too skinny and cracked out. Death watch look...heroin is a hell of a drug!

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:04 AM

For fucks sake, ADVANCE notice of this would have been cool.

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:16 AM

Dear 9:59, comparing the Replacements with a shit band like the Goo Goo Dolls scientifically proves that you are retarded.

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:18 AM

Hi Axl... HI AXL...where's Axl? HI Axl... hi axl!!!

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:26 AM

now THAT's a mustache!

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:26 AM

Setlist seems to indicate that even Axl knows his
decade in the making Chinese Democracy was a piece o crap

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:27 AM

Slash is not GNR. If you want to get technical, GNR was over when Slash and Duff signed over the name of the band to Axl. They were "working for Axl" from there on out. Slash laughs and says "I'm not in that band anymore." Why can't people accept this? Axl OWNS GNR.

Posted by MIKE | February 12, 2010 10:28 AM

what the hell would advance notice have done? You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that this was an invite only event. Fashion Designer store plus fashion week plus celebrity guest list plus secret unadvertised gig equal Brooklyn Vegan readers not admitted.

So if this was mentioned yesterday afternoon, what good would it have done?

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:28 AM

not a GnR fan, but this is kind of awesome

Posted by isfet | February 12, 2010 10:28 AM

I've seen the new Guns n Roses and the most interesting thing is their giant over the top arena stage setup. Without that, all stripped down to a clothing store stage, seems rather unimpressive.

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:31 AM

phony band plus phony venue plus phony crowd equal the ultimate in a phony event.

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:32 AM

GNR is playing Mercury tonight at 1am...

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:36 AM

really?

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:37 AM

A Replacements reunion may be your wet dream... but what makes you think it's Stinson's, too?

>> you are right it might not be Tommy's desire either but as long as he is on a million dollar a year retainer (so I heard) with G n R his plans are pretty decided and I'm sure Axl knows that too... and Westerberg as well...wherever he is.....he's been making Axl look prolific lately...

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:39 AM

the show was pretty amazing. i have never been a massive GnR fan but I obviously respect what they mean to so many people and the world of rock in general. I haven't gone out of my way to see them since they' ve come back mainly due to stories i've heard about Axl. However, last night he was incredible. He brought it. He missed a few notes here and there but it was pretty amazing to hear that he mostly still has that killer unmistakable voice and is such a great showman... even in such a tiny place. I cannot say enough about how impressed i was with his performance. The band on the other hand sounded sloppy and amateurish but that was probably due mostly to the fact that they were playing on rented gear, didn't sound check and weren't playing on a proper PA. All in all it was quite a memorable show.

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:41 AM

@10:04 Emily's always been that skinny! But did you see the ring on her left hand? Hopes...dashed.

Hey anybody remember what song Patti Smith played for Alexander McQueen?

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:42 AM

actually I take that back.. Westerberg has made a lot of recordings in the last 5 years..(some good some bad) I just wish he'd play out more.

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 10:42 AM

It's got a be a weird feeling when you're G n' Rs fill-in lead guitar player and you're not only playing a Les Paul, you're wearing a stupid hat! What a douche.

Posted by wingwalker77 | February 12, 2010 10:42 AM

Early Soul Asylum is pretty darn good.... even their first record on
A & M was decent, after that not so much... To call The Replacements "one of the most overrated shit bands of all time" begs the questions... do you like music at all ?
..and if so please enlighten us with examples your exemplary taste..

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2010 11:00 AM

Tommy Stintson was having a blast up there. He looked to be having the most fun of anyone up there and they were all having a good time. He seems pretty happy with his gig...at least from what i could tell last night.

Axl Rose Brawls with Self in Local Bar, Kicks Self Out of Guns ‘n’ Roses

By Ursula Christophersen

CHICAGO—While on tour with the latest version of Guns ‘n’ Roses, lead singer, Axl Rose, found himself in a scuffle with himself at a neighborhood bar, after the band’s nightly performance. According to witnesses, Rose was sitting by himself in a corner, when he began arguing with himself at high volume. It... »

Right on 11:25. Indeed post-Bob Stinson, the Replacements shows blew and the albums weren't much better. Why do you think they quit? They knew too! Slim Dunlop-what a joke that was. Still want my money back from the 1985 RCMH show.

Still want my money back from the 1985 RCMH show. >>

Bob would have played that show... he didnt leave until 1986
I saw them at The Beacon in 1987 with Slim and they were pretty freakin' great so I don't think its completely the popular opinion that they turned to shit after Bob left... there were a few good years there..
Pleased To Meet Me is still one of the top 4 Mats record in my opinion .. Don't Tell A Soul was a big disappointment of course.. I actually liked All Shook Down but I view it more as a Westerberg solo album...

The band that played right after GNR (at the after party) was from Brooklyn, and they tore the house down despite a relatively short set...I'm guessing GNR's very delayed start had something to do with that...anyway their name is Midnight Spin. Check them out at www.midnightspin.com

Lame. Lots of "former" in this story, to include CBGB, Guns, and playing their old hits.

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2010 4:06 PM

Ok folks...take it easy!
No its no longer CBGB's!
No its not the full band
Duffy puffy Slashy Sleepy dopey yadda yadda.
But to see axl 5 feet from you belting out and nailing songs that you grew up hearing all around you is pretty F-ing awesome. Even more to have him do it on hallowed ground (old cbgb's)amazing!
Thank you to John Varvatos for preserving as much as he could of CBGB's..Would you rather it have turned into another bank? And to all that say John Varvatos is a poser..I beg to differ! I often see John at rock concerts cheering along with everyone else. Just a few months ago I turn to my left and there is John at a Moterhead concert, singing every word. Listen folks.... Fashion is a form of the arts, and John just happened to be one of us that made it. He loves rock n roll, and even though I can not afford to even buy a belt of his, his line is rock inspired. Don't be a hater, go visit his store at the old CB's and you can feel the energy of the place still alive. Also John supports local up-coming bands the first Thursday of each month at the store. He clears out the clothes, builds a stage, offers free liquor and Pabst Blue Ribbon, with no cover!
Go there, sign their mailing list, and next time there is something going on...you'll be in the loop.
-word!

Thusday night was amazing, guys... Great set, great sound, great view!

Thanks to everybody for reaching out to me these last few days. This last year was a trip!

So far, I've got Duff, Steven, Slash and (now) Axl to all individually autograph my left arm in the last year in 4 different locations around the US, just for me to go & get them tattooed that same day! My friends and I all thought that Axl would *impossible* to score, but my peeps in NYC didn't let me down and, after a LOT of persistence, I finally got Mr. Rose to add his sig to the collection (see pic above of Axl handing me back my Sharpie). As a life long, old-skool GNR fan, I couldn't be any happier!!

So now it's down to Izzy. 4 down, 1 to go! Get in the ring, Mr. Stradlin... I'm comin' for ya!

-Tommy Rockstar, NYC

PS: Pix of the arm on my FB page for those of you who've been writing & asking!

But 7:41, I agree it should have been made a NYC landmark, and turned into a museum.
As far as Fashion and music together, any and all art forms can be combined.
Can you imagine a silent runway show with no music behind it, now that would be awkard yet funny.

the show was pretty amazing. i have never been a massive GnR fan but I obviously respect what they mean to so many people and the world of rock in general.
