Harder Better Faster Stronger

BVYou might notice that things look slightly different all of a sudden. It doesn't look that different, but a little. Basically the site is wider - it's now a more standard size that takes advantage of some of that available screen space. Pathetically, this upgrade has been in development for something like two years. To say I multitask is an understatement and it's hard to prioritize things like redesigns when there are so many posts to post and bands to book. I'm glad this is finally live!

Speaking of bands to book, we have 91 of them playing our SXSW parties starting Wednesday. For that reason, today (Tuesday) was probably the dumbest possible day for me to make the switch over to this new design, but I couldn't wait any longer. If you notice anything broken, please don't hesitate to "contact us" via the new "Contact" page (never had one of those before)... actually that page is still kind of bare at the moment. Feel free to leave comments too. A developer that is standing by will see them quicker in the comments too. I already found one bug as I was typing this.

petWhat's new? You'll notice more standardization across all pages of the site. For instance the Petfinder featured adoptable pet of the day is now on every page instead of just hidden on category pages. There's a new ad size and more featured content. I know it's hard to find content after it scrolls off the homepage on this site. It's a common complaint. Some of the new design features take that into account. I also know I still have a long way to go in that area, but hopefully things have improved slightly for now.

Remember you can always see a list of today's shows by clicking on "What's Going on Today". You can now also always see a list of BrooklynVegan-presented shows by clicking on "BV Events". With all the live shows we put on now (including the fun one at Knitting Factory last night - thanks everyone who came out), it's kind of amazing that there was never a page like that before. "Contests" will bring you to any posts with a contest in them. "Recent Galleries", though already a feature of the site for a few months, is now is a bit more automated making it easier for me to update. Same with "Recent Features", and I added "Most Popular" to go with "Recent Comments". Look through the sidebar if you don't know what I mean.

All posts now have a "Share This" button in case u want an easy way to send a link to Twitter, Facebook, MySpace (not thinking this one is going to be used too often), Digg or Google Reader. Besides that there's a few minor design things and other random new pages. All in all, not much new, and nothing revolutionary.

All of the feedback by testers has been positive so I hope you like it too, and thanks for everything!

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:15 PM

Using Safari and the comment section is also messed up.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:16 PM

Maybe it's just the Macs that are messed up.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:17 PM

Messed up on both Safari & Firefox.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:19 PM

But dee can see it, so nevermind.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:30 PM

Are we still allowed to post stupid useless comments?

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:31 PM

Works now!

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:31 PM

Definitely seeing funkiness in Chrome/XP. "What's Going On XXXXX" button is cut off.

Also of note: can't seem to find any pages that aren't the exact same width as before, only flanked with swanky BV-paletted gradients.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:44 PM

Change? We fear change.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 3:46 PM

Posted by brooklynvegan | March 16, 2010 4:21 PM

i take it the ads are supposed to be above the logo, but they appear below the main menu, covering the headline and the buttons. im on firefox.

Posted by blah | March 16, 2010 4:22 PM

check out space for the new 300x250 ad slot.

thank you for all you do, BV.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 4:46 PM

I don't like the dark background behind the text. Too hard to read.

Redesign looks good & love the site. Thanks for all the news. now, if you could only permanently turn off the comments section, site-wide.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 5:31 PM

Keep up the good work, BV!

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 6:14 PM

hey BV, did you get bought out or something? is that why it's redesigned?

looks great

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 6:15 PM

Dude, this is seriously hard to read.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 9:01 PM

the facebook link on the right side gives this message: The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2010 9:47 PM

can you make links a hand instead of an arrow?

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 12:25 AM

It looks OK on Firefox but a little crunched together as far as the letters go. It's nice to see the pet finders ad for any folks to easily see that and adopt a cat or dog and not get rid of them when you move. Right people?

The comments section are great. It's cute when people complain about this section but didnt see the real ridiculous rude asinine comments about Throbbing Gristle that went into to the hundreds.

Can do without the Weight Watchers ad. Switch it to Mcgruff the crime dog.

Posted by AChrome | March 17, 2010 12:51 AM

Terms of Use (were they there before?) skip #1.

Posted by huh | March 17, 2010 1:32 AM

Not really related to your redesign, but I always wished the what's happening today had some pics. Thumbnails, or something (yes, I know, extra work). Lotta text that you have to read through, and I sometimes miss a band in there that I'd like to see.

Posted by Cuse | March 17, 2010 2:22 AM

dark text on a dark background? This is a shitshow.

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 8:38 AM

Yo, this sh*t is dumb hard to read!!! Did you even test this new layout before you went live with it???

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 9:35 AM

The website is almost impossible to read. The font is way to lite.

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 10:36 AM

AGREED. IMPOSSIBLE TO READ.

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 1:30 PM

BV, I'd imagine that this probably looks easy to read on your end, though your blog writing software. It doesn't look that way as a guest, though. The text and the background blend together to the point where I have to highlight it to read at all (which is still going to give me a headache). I IMPLORE YOU TO FIX YOUR OTHERWISE PERFECT BLOG.

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 2:06 PM

Ditto. I'm using IE on a PC and I can't read anything here. The entries and comments appear in a dark green background with what looks like dark grey text. The contrast is terrible. Please adjust.

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 2:18 PM

great content, yet poor design aesthetic overall.

is a web developer doing your front end design? I mean... look at those new buttons!?

Id highly suggest consulting a graphic designer.

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 4:59 PM

I can't read a damn word!

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 5:33 PM

CAN'T READ ANYTHING

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 8:26 PM

doesn't help the guy if you're not telling him what browser/computer y'all are using.

just had to put tihs site up on a laptop running windows xp with Internet Explorer 6 and the background's not appearing. if you download firefox or chrome it should be fine.

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 9:14 PM

I'm on IE on a PC and the background/text issue seems to be fixed now. Thanks!

Posted by Writing a Fiction Book | March 20, 2010 12:24 PM

what browsers are you using?

Posted by iPad | March 21, 2010 2:20 PM

I'm running windows 95 on my Pentium I processor, and my dial-up modem keeps kicking me offline...

Posted by Anonymous | March 22, 2010 9:41 PM

Guggenheim billed it as a performance piece and it was just an installation. Resultingly, the crowd simply waited for the "show" to start, limiting anyone's ability to freely explore the space (the ground floor was packed with indian-style seaters, and the balconies were lined with people holding onto their spots like grim death.

Posted by منتديات | January 9, 2011 1:04 PM

it makes no sense for them to deconstruct the entire TD North venue to play a show the next night ~50 miles south at an amphitheater (which probably would require a different stage setup anyway). They'd play Providence or Mohegan Sun before that (and I think those are both highly unlikely).
