"The decision on the part of Coachella organizers to no longer sell single day tickets for the three-day 2010 event has provoked the ire of many a fan. "Make it fair for all us people who obviously want to attend but cannot afford $269," reads a note on the Facebook group created by 22-year-old San Diego resident Brian Lozano." [LA Times]

if they can sell out their festival with three day passes why shouldn't they do that? seems like a silly complaint.

crappy music anyway- save your beans and go out to see real music for under $25

3:02 is either dilusional or is into bands like hoobastank.
Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2010 3:07 PM
yea 302 is an idiot. ive been twice already. best fest on the planet, totally worth the loot

Forget the price issue for a moment. Not everyone can attend all 3 days. Is it fair that someone who is only able to attend on a Saturday to make them pay for 3 days?
I'm not sure why the organizers are forcing this. They are all about having strong attendance numbers, and given the choice I think people will skip it if they don't plan to attend all 3 days.

agree with andrew.
you also have to consider that single day passes are usually more than one-third of the cost of the 3-day pass. so if there's a complete sell-out, the promoters would be getting more money if some fans went the single-day route...
Posted by BK | March 8, 2010 3:29 PM
I'm too in agreement with Andrew.. I've been to every Coachella.
On the west coast this 3 day ticket thing has turned into a big deal....
Its a money grab, and a way to increase attendance on the day no one goes (sunday).
a lot of people on the coachella message boards have turned this matter into a us vs them type situation. where "real fans" are the people who can pony up the $$$ and "people who dont belong" are the people who only want to attend one day.
the first poster sort of falls into this strain of thinking:
"if they can sell out their festival with three day passes why shouldn't they do that? seems like a silly complaint."
For the record there has never been a sell out at coachella. They briefly halted sales the year the Pixies and Radiohead headlined, but everyone I knew were able to get tickets at the gate day of.
Plus when a giant pollo field in the middle of nowhere can easily accept 45-50K in attendance..the term "sold out" isnt really applicable.

Everybody knows that a Facebook petition is the most forceful and expeditious means for bringing about change in the world.

I signed that petition so hard that I broke my MACBOOK AIR!!

Why is life so unfair
Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2010 4:13 PM
What kind of Adult in America can't come up with $300, seriously if you're having issues conjuring up that small amount of money over the course of a few months then I think going to a concert should be the lowest thing on your To Do: list.
As for the people that can't make all 3 days, well life isn't fair so stop your whining and use that energy you waste on bitching to find a job that gives you some vacation days.
Fucking entitled self centered fucks, find something real to bitch about, you make me sick.

A few things to point out in defense of the 3 day pass plan:
- There rarely ever has been a large number of single day passes made available each year, and they've been in decline in recent years. Those tickets go really quickly (usually within a few days) and are never released again.
- In past years, you could buy a 3 day pass and sell the tickets of the days which you didn't want to attend on your own. This year, you only get 1 ticket for all 3 days and a bracelet once you get in. Had it been the same 3 ticket set up, I doubt there would be as much of an uproar because the protesters would be posting the tickets they didn't want up on Craigslist or eBay.
- It's a festival, not a one day event that you show up for right before the headliner you want to see goes on. Coachella's biggest competitor, Bonnaroo, which is even longer, only offers tickets to the entire 4 days and not just a day. Festival organizers see these things as an experience. If you want to go see only certain artists from a single day, I'm sure they'll be playing nearby, it'll cost you just as much combined in total as it would a single day pass and the sets will be longer anyway.
- Is it Coachella's fault people can't save their money? The festival happens the same time every year, so you can't hold organizers responsible for your lack of ability to monitor your finances. There was a layaway plan in place for people who might have trouble with that.
- Festival organizers have already stated that tickets will be sold at the gate at prorated rates as the days go on. This probably works best to the advantage of people who only wanted to attend Sunday but at least it's something.

4:26, is Ronald Reagan your hero?
Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2010 4:32 PM
The organizer's explanation in the article makes sense. The three day people will experience less traffic, easier to find lodging, etc. Again, if the festival can turn a profit doing it this way, and they prefer to do it this way, what's the beef? I mean, why can't I just buy tickets to see specific bands at the festival. I'd rather pay $20 to see pavement rather than $100 to see all the bands on that day rather than $300 to see the whole thing, but life ain't about me and my desires.

all the "anonymous" posts read like plants for the promoter.
most seem to strike the same tone that implies that people who want to attend one day:
A. dont belong.
b. cant afford it.
c. some combination of the 2.
also to the people who are in favor of the 3 day pass, why are you all so caustic in you responses. where is the venom coming from?
good credit here. lots of $$$ in the savings, gainfully employed. just dont want to be suckered (forced) into buying a 3 day pass, when for the prior 8 years I could just buy the day or days I FELT was the strongest.
Also please spare us the lecture of what you deem a festival to be. Ive been there dick to butt for tool, radiohead, massive attack, MIA, ChemBros, Bjork, Mars Volta, etc.. what gives you the right to determine how many days I should attend?!!? or set examples for what a festival should be.
consumer choice.
wasnt aware there was such an abudance of "anonymous" ticketmaster/livenation suck ups.
Posted by smitherssocal | March 8, 2010 4:42 PM
I'm not an anonymous stooge working for Coachella or anyone who has a vested financial interest in the festival. I just think if you don't like the set up, then accept it for what it is, either fork up the cash or don't. Back in the days of double features, would these people also demand that they pay only for the movie they want to see?
Is it just a matter of not being able to take a day off from work or something? The festival's schedule doesn't revolve around every single person's schedule who wants to attend. Either play by it's rules or don't go. You win some, you lose some. There's ample time allowed to plan accordingly for time off. That's life. The point is that things change. I pointed out that other hugely successful festivals like Bonnaroo and Glastonbury don't even offer single day passes to it's festivalgoers. These people should be thankful to have even been sold single day passes for as long as they did. Just because Coachella offered single day passes before doesn't mean they're obligated to continue to.
Posted by Coachella Veteran | March 8, 2010 4:56 PM
The double feature analogy doesn't work because it is the same cost for 2 movies.
Its funny to see you all get so bent out of shape at this festival of approved, safe corporate culture.
Posted by nygrump | March 8, 2010 5:08 PM
Don't worry. They just want to see how many passes they can sell and then they'll release the single day tickets and pretend like they're doing it for the fans. They just want an incentive to upsell people. The business side of it is pretty easy to understand.
However, notice that there's none of this BS with Sasquatch. As much as I love Coachella, stuff like this makes me want to blow off Palm Springs for the beauty of the gorge. They're very different festivals but you have to weigh the hassle in these kinds of situations.

I am a stooge working for Coachella but I put a name in the name section. Fooled your ass smitherssocal! What now? Oh, snappity dappity doo!
3 day passes 4ever!
Posted by Not Anonymous | March 8, 2010 5:28 PM
IMHO, whatever happens this year will change next year. It'll always continue evolving for better or for worse because Goldenvoice is constantly trying to fine tune every aspect of the festival and there's always something for attendees to bitch about.

WHINE WHINE WHINE. All I know is that there will be a lot less psychotic douchebag fanbases that have showed up an hour before an act to smash their way to the front and then immediately leave (Rage, Tool, RHCP all had completely shitty crowds like this). Everyone there will be in it for the long haul and I bet as a result its one of the best crowds of the past six years I've been.
Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2010 6:31 PM
^^makes an excellent point^^
Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2010 6:45 PM
yes, and that's the idea! which is good. although i don't think any of the acts on this bill lend themselves to that sort of behavior. all those crazy muse fans with their pushing and moshing!

hipsters will complain about everything, won't they.

that facebook group is a bunch of fucking babies.

4:26 is Gene Simmons, but Gene makes a fair pt.
Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2010 8:38 PM
If these people can't budget properly or afford to take a day off from work, then maybe they need to rearrange their priorities instead of crying foul about a festival or petitioning to one to cater to their needs.

dear Coachella Veteran:
in case you haven't noticed during your ___ years on this Earth, as a human being i'm assuming: people have trouble accepting things that they find extremely disappointing. not sure if you've picked up on that yet.
i applaud people who find a constructive way to express that, instead of just accepting every unfortunate circumstance that comes their way. who knew this was a controversial idea!

Suddenly, I'm feeling very poor. Who's playing at Cake shop this month?
Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2010 9:00 PM
yo capitalists, keep it down.
for me & my significant other, that's a good $600, on top of the trip down there & the time off work. it's not that we "can't save up the money" by workin' the american dream, it's just that $600 is a LOT of money. if they had the option of one or two days instead of all of them, it would feel better on the pocketbook.
that's pretty much the situation at hand here.
damn scenesters seem to be so much richer these days. when did that happen?
would be nice to go to coachella for once, but i spent my money on sasquatch instead. under $400 for two 3-day passes. nice!
Posted by massromantic | March 8, 2010 9:47 PM
you can blame it all on the greedy group fish AEG golden voice demanded and got people to pay for three days stupid trust fund band fish fans when they played coachella polo fields last holloween
Posted by lahipster | March 8, 2010 9:53 PM
Massromantic. You rock my friend.
Thanks for speaking truth to the indie hip$ters.
Get toasty during massive attack @ Sasquatch.

Coachella, Music and Art festival, or Coachella $ucker scam? For the complainers: if you don't agree with the 3 day pass obligation (as I don't), no need to whine, just don't buy anything and then they'll see that 20% loss from last year and bring back the one day passes next year. As for the 3 day suck ups, your posts obviously displays the level of your snobby elitism.
Posted by music man | March 28, 2010 2:47 AM
This is so fun to read. Children, get over it. Its a 3-day pass, boo hoo. No one is trying to be an elitist here, at least I don't think, so just calm down. I don't get everything I want, and sometimes you don't either. I know you hipsters have only been out of your parents houses for a couple years so you aren't quite used to having to do things on your own yet, but in time you'll learn how to cope with that. Better luck next year, maybe they will see that its kind of a stupid idea and it'll go back to the way it was.

HAHAHA Sold out! Guess those who were crying and hoping the festival would tank won't be able to hope for single day tickets next year.
