South African 'rap-rave' group Die Antwoord has reportedly signed with Interscope to release five albums. One of those will be their debut, $O$, which is streaming now on their site.
They made an appearance on March 10th at Dim Mak Tuesdays at L.A.'s Cinespace, part of "secret mission overseas". Will they show up at SXSW? I haven't heard anything, but there are a few rumors. Videos of the group in L.A. are below...
Die Antwoord LIVE ZEF SIDE in LA!
Die Antwoord Secret Show at Cinespace, Hollywood CA (First US Show)
DIE ANTWOORD x DAVID CHOE x FRIENDSWITHYOU - LA CA
Ninja freestyling at Cinespace . Stereo Heroes DJing...

ha,ha...5 albums. Their 'hype' will dissapear after their first album drops and noone understands what the hell they're saying or doing. Then, they'll be locked into their "5" album contract and not able to releaase anything for the next 5 years. They should make a reality T.V. show of this and how their downfall ensues. I'd watch it.

They've supposedly been added or are about to be added to Coachella which I think is noted in the article link.

Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 1:39 PM
they were at R bar on bowery last night. man, they're weird.
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 1:51 PM
without having seen their videos and knowing nothing about them, i'm pretty confident this is the worst band of 2010.

5 albums? Interscope should just pay them with super-cuts coupons
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 2:20 PM
Stop pretending to like them.

Oh man I just know all the mindless hipster girls are going to sport that blonde fucking mullet in a few months.
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 2:32 PM
larry bird! ha ha!!
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 2:37 PM
Hahaha that is fucking amazing. These clowns are laughing all the way to the bank because of how moronic the major labels still are. Hopefully this joke puts that long-awaited nail in the coffin of banality.
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 2:51 PM
why would anyone sign a deal for 5 albums
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 2:52 PM

the girl has this white trash neo nazi tank girl look to her, but she still kinda hot, huh?
Posted by annie momus | March 17, 2010 3:36 PM
diplo kept name dropping them on twitter saying they were gonna make an appearance at r bar. people showed up expecting a show, but got zilch. annoying
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 3:43 PM
You have to admit, though, their shit is more interesting than Animal Collective's latest museum piece, which was about as boring as an M. Ward interview.

I thought District 9 was great.
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 3:55 PM
whatever.its funny.
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 4:01 PM
The whole creepy Aryan trash look is very unappealing to me, as is their "music."
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 4:15 PM
I think it's going to work. It's a real curve ball for music which doesn't happen that often (not for lack of people trying). We're not supposed to like a white rap group from South Africa...yet many of us kinda do. Perhaps it's the all around wrongness that is appealing. And I happen to think the music is pretty unique and catchy too (not to mention perverse).

I'm glad to hear the girl from Aqua is making music again.
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 4:45 PM
you know, instead of blogging about crap like this, you could give more attention to a band like Freelance Whales, who have 10x more integrity and 'realness' than this!
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 4:47 PM
My band that no one has ever, nor will ever, hear about is way better than this band that I'm bitching about.
Posted by typical Brooklyn hipster | March 17, 2010 4:50 PM
The association with Dim Mak was a dead giveaway that the music would be complete shit.
This was 100% confirmed after 10 seconds of listening to the first clip.

Ignorant, anonymous commenters assuming the comments are only coming from Americans! Yep.
Posted by Anonymous | March 17, 2010 5:20 PM
Yes, the ONLY reason people are making fun of this band is because they're foreign.
If a couple of Americans made atrocious candy flipper rave music with inaudible retarded rapping over it and had their hair cut by a blind person, I'm sure they'd be the darlings of BV.

I don't know. Everyone hating on this is crazy. This dude's got some kind of talent I am not even sure I understand yet. I'm all about it. The independent music blog reading public is like the Hate-o-sphere. Hyped or hipster or fake ... whatever you want to call it, I don't care. I think it's amazing and I literally cannot wait to see what they come out with next.
Posted by JJ | March 17, 2010 10:57 PM
is that freelance whales guy serious? you do know they use the words lemon now and later in one of their songs?

I know JJ you got your finger on the pulse there guy cause these hill billies sure know how to make music for a speed ridden, inbred, and real scary snuff film for sad paint huffers gone mad. Their lyrics are just too cryptic for us to understand isnt that right JJ cause the South Aparthied kids had to quit their jobs at the bleach and formaldehyde factory to lay down some tracks yall, and not the kind that involves bath tub cranker sores.
Ground breaking band. The next album should be non articulate and sadly dirty also via the chemical weapons dump.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 1:15 AM
Oh yeah these kids are underground and everyone gets a pitchfork at this fest. Thats not all.. we got mad viruses dumped from a helicopter yall.
Port a potties? Na Antwoord dont use no port a potties or the bathroom yall.
Posted by WhatHappened | March 18, 2010 1:21 AM
so many jealous losers on this board. it'd be funny if it weren't so painfully pathetic.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 1:24 AM
Now I get it, after reading their interview on Vice (http://www.viceland.com/int/v16n9/htdocs/die-antwoord-154.php) its clear they are mentally disabled (most likely as people have hinted from huffing glue).
They're the Kids of Widney High of rave-rap. Now I'm into them.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 4:33 AM
White fucking Trash
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 8:03 AM
Fuck yes. Die Anwoord are eactly what should be on the radio right now. Between them & Lady GaGa, shit's finally getting interesting again. I ain't saying it's gonna last or become classic - just that it's fun & good & interesting & way more enjoyable than what the underground has become.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 3:23 PM
Anon 1:15 - crazy talk. I didn't say I couldn't understand the lyrics there big guy. It's the talent. But you obviously get it because your not sitting around trolling the internet at 1 in the AM being all witty with your edgy referenced blog posts ... oh wait.
Posted by JJ | March 18, 2010 3:25 PM
This is the equivalent of that chick who did "It's So Cold in the D" getting a 5 album deal.
Posted by Kitty | March 18, 2010 3:58 PM
i would give anything to never hear about this band again
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 5:08 PM
Oh no! People are talking about a band!
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 5:12 PM
He washed off his tattoos – I knew they were too good to be true
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 5:42 PM
Don't think that's Ninja in that pic up there.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2010 5:54 PM
If this is meant to be a joke or some elaborate irony? They failed especially since it has been pointed out elsewhere when they take it too far when they believe their own act. Or maybe if enough idiots in corners of Williamsburg and elsewhere buy it then the jokes on them.

Wow. There are so many spiteful, jealous, no-talent ass clowns on the internet who have nothing better to do than to talk shit on a group of people who will do more than they ever will in their lifetime. Keep hating, stay jealous, and die a cold lonely death. Props to Die Antwoord, they're somethin different for sure.
"This one is dedicated to all the haters out there, jealous of us, because were better than you."

Guggenheim billed it as a performance piece and it was just an installation. Resultingly, the crowd simply waited for the "show" to start, limiting anyone's ability to freely explore the space (the ground floor was packed with indian-style seaters, and the balconies were lined with people holding onto their spots like grim death.
Posted by منتديات | January 9, 2011 1:26 PM
it makes no sense for them to deconstruct the entire TD North venue to play a show the next night ~50 miles south at an amphitheater (which probably would require a different stage setup anyway). They'd play Providence or Mohegan Sun before that (and I think those are both highly unlikely).
