Karen Elson

Karen Elson, wife of one Jack White, played her first New York show Monday night (March. 22) at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan, showcasing songs from her forthcoming album 'The Ghost That Walks'.

Oldham-born Elson played acoustic guitar and was backed by a five-piece band during her hour-long set. Prior rumours of an appearance by her husband were proved false, although White produced and plays drums on Elson's album, out on May 25.

It was only Elson's fourth solo appearance, though Elson herself is far from inexperienced, having contributed vocals to Robert Plant's 'Dreamland' album in 2003 and duetted with Cat Power in 2006 on a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's 'I Love You (Me Neither)'. [Spinner]

One of Karen's first three solo performances took place at the Third Man Records pop up store (aka Franks Deli & Grocery) at SXSW in Austin on Saturday, March 20th. Samantha Marble got some pictures and reports:
The line to get into Karen Elson's last performance at SXSW was more than half way down the block only moments before the show was scheduled to take place. The show took place in a small, dimly lit room in the very back of Frank's Deli & Grocery. The setting was a perfect accompaniment to her enchanting voice and haunting lyrics. In between songs joked around with the crowd, explained what inspired her songs and raved about the musicians that accompanied her. The entire performance stood out as one of the loveliest shows I went to during SXSW.

Sorry, but I am not impressed with her videos. I think people are overrating her for just not being terrible. Her voice and songs are just okay.

Gingers have no souls.

She's not really a ginger, but a blonde.

Actually, I think it's nice that she is making a go of her music. The Citizen's Band and her collab w Cat Power were pretty impressive.

She is the new face of music.

When did Julianne Moore start singing?

Posted by Anonymous | March 23, 2010 6:21 PM

She should get outside more often. If her skin was any more translucent, she'd disappear.

New face of music? Wow, you must not get out much. She isn't bad, but she's completely derivative. I'm tired of stuff like this with no passion.

Actually Kit, I think people are being more critical and giving her the brush off because she is a model who also happens to be married to Jack White. A model will always be met with skepticism and derision when they try to do something different. She could be the second coming of Patsy Cline or some shit and she'd still be looked at with shifty eyes. Certainly not saying she is the second coming of Patsy Cline, but she'd be taken more seriously if she was a nobody newcomer. On the other hand, we wouldn't be talking about her if she was a nobody. So it goes both ways I guess.

Why is this site covering a publicist-heavy-artist like this? When there's dozens of Brooklyn based artists? Change the name of this blog already?

Anon@10:22 - Who the hell cares enough to do "research" on some middling singer?

Posted by Jane | March 24, 2010 1:06 PM

She was good at LPR. Life changing? No. Well-written and arranged songs, well performed. No reason to hate . . . .

Did Jack White tell her that she should wear the same outfit to everyshow?

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2010 1:25 PM

no but jack white told her to pick out two colors and make everyone in the band wear them.
