...which ended up being a big fail....

You have won a chance to be part of an extraordinary MGMT event. The MGMTmobile will be visiting 6 cities, and we are challenging YOU to come find itThisWe will reveal clues to the location 1 hour prior to arrival. The first 6 people to this location will be part of a very special MGMT experience. Be sure to stay tuned as we reveal each city below. [Where is MGMT?]
UPDATE: This is NOT a show. My guess: they're going to play the record for people that get there in time.
UPDATE 2: And it's not even for that many people. The first people that got there went into a van I think.
UPDATE 3: The first few people that got there were loaded in a van. The rest saw "MGMT Was Here" written in on the sidewalk and were GIVEN A BUTTON!
Sorry I ever even posted about this. :-( -- Lame stunt.

MGMT stole this idea from the New Pornographers http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/2010/03/09/the-new-pornographers-announce-the-sxsw-together-shuttle/
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2010 5:51 PM
they make it so easy to hate them, it's just not fair..
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2010 5:51 PM
Have you heard the new MGMT single? Almost as lame as the parking lot "festival" they're playing in Jersey next month.
Posted by bro | March 10, 2010 5:56 PM
I hear you have to be under 13 to get into that festival.
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2010 5:59 PM
Wow, what a bunch of whiny little bitches in this thread. "MGMT didn't do exactly what I want so now I HATE them!!!" Are you stomping your feet when you post? If they had done NOTHING you would be fine but because they aren't playing a show you make a bunch of emo posts?
And BV, just because you fucked up and posted bad info in an effort to be the first to break the news doesn't mean that the event isn't exciting to those who got to participate. Grow up.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2010 7:58 PM
mgmt=jonas bros, but worse
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2010 8:12 PM
CUZ MGMT ARE LAME!
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2010 9:14 PM
the jonas brothers are good
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2010 10:27 PM
MGMT's good music is limited to Kids, Time To Pretend & Electric Feel....the three singles. EVerything is utter garbage. This psychedelic stuff is really not good at all. Stick to the dancey songs guys. Seeing them live was painful b/c i was just waiting for those 3 songs & everything else was shit. That was how pretty much the whole crowd felt too, you could tell by the reactions to songs and everyone's body language.

i wonder if brookyn vegan would ever use the word "lame" to describe one of the bands at his heavily promoted shows at sxsw and elsewhere.
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 1:29 AM
I went to this. If it was 1969 they would've swept us up with a dose and taken us to a show. Instead I had to dose later and eat cheez itz in a van with 50 colored pencils paid for by the label. Still beats being a soldier, though....
Posted by was there | March 11, 2010 5:13 AM
@ 12:09
I was so sure I was going to feel the same way about the first LP-- that it was the hyper catchy singles plus meandering filler. After putting off actually listening to it until this winter, I was surprisingly into it all the way through.
I know they're sorta an easy target with their cheezy visual aesthetic, but that first record was surprisingly awesome. I don't know if the new one will be too, but I'm at least gonna give it a chance, rather than dismiss it based on this admittedly goofy event/gimmick.
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 7:26 AM
This is a fun stunt! At least it's different...
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 7:48 AM
12:09 dont forget "The Youth" and "Weekend Warriors" also good one
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 9:37 AM
Word up 12:09. I would call refer to them more as attempts, regardless the rest of the album is poorly written and to call it psychedelic really does a disservice to the forebears of the genre.
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 10:42 AM
SHUT THE FUCK UP ALL YOU FUCKING CONFORMIST DOUCHE FUCKS WHO ONLY LISTEN TO 3 SONGS BY MGMT, THEY ARE PROBABLY THE BEST BAND IN AMERICA THE ONLY REASON EVERYONE IN LIVE SHOWS DONT LIKE IT IS BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE THERE WAS A FUCKING DOUCHE WHO LISTENS TO FUCKING AKON AND BLACK EYED PEA AND KESHA
MGMT=WIN
AND HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU EVEN COMPARE THEM TO THE JONAS BROTHERS ALL YOU SHOULD JUST KILL YOURSELF THE DISNEY CHANNEL WRITES THE MUSIC FOR JONAS BROTHERS .NOW IF YOU CALL THAT MUSIC, JUST KILL YOURSELF
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 10:53 AM
10:53, you're deeply confused. Also, the caps lock key is a privilege not a right.
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 10:59 AM
^^12:09 nailed it on the head. I felt the exact same way at that Jelly Pool show 2 years ago.
Posted by Anonymal | March 11, 2010 11:43 AM
Anyone who tried this is an idiot...
look at what they got (if someone hasn't reported this yet..)
Update: And here's a report from someone in the van. "I was captured, we drove around listening to congratulations then they gave us tshirts. The album was surfy psychedelic." He continued, "it was literally a white van with a random limo driver, two girls running the whole thing and me +8 other people that showed up."
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 12:11 PM
anon 10:53-how old are you? you can't possibly be older than 17...no way. using phrases like MGMT=win? jesus christ. go jack off with your mother's panties, you fucking basement dwelling dipshit. telling people to go kill themselves? you are a fucking dweeb.
Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2010 12:28 PM
So in my humble opinion MGMT is an excellent band! I have a great deal of respect for them, they always keep it interesting. The Kids video was a risky concept as is doing a record very different from their first but they did it because they wanted to, it was their artistic vision not some label guy telling them what to do. They take chances and sometimes get shit on but at least they are constantly looking to evolve as artists visually and musically, you might not love everything they do but at least they make an effort. This band will be around for a long time, i promise you. xo

look, to everyone who's saying "fuck this it's not a show"- if you really were fucking mgmt fans you wouldn't be dissapointed with these "secret events", personally i would grow a dick and give it up to even be part of this. also...if anyone here stilll thinks mgmt apologized for their new song...that wasn't a fucking apology...they're trying to get rid of all the little "i love kids! i love time to pretend!" fans. mgmt did not fail, you all did. and
HAHAHAHA
time to pretend, kids, and electric feel- if you really think those are the only good ones,
then get the fuck off this page.
mgmt is trying to get rid off fans like you.
mgmt changed my life.
if it weren't for mgmt i would still be listening to the radio.
and if you don't like mgmt, we don't want to hear your bullshit.
you guys belong on this shitty planet,
the rest of us are going to the 4th dimension.
in the words of mgmt- "we don't care"
Posted by erica | March 17, 2010 6:54 PM
FINALLY! Thank you so much erica! I completely agree. All these haters are just the tools who thought they were cool because they listened to kids. Maybe if you actually appreciated good music you would have realized how amazing the rest of the album is and im not talking about time to pretend and electric feel. If you are an asshole, jock, and/or toolbag, dont listen to mgmt, if you know something about music, enjoy. I look forward to everything this band creates.
Posted by Danny | March 19, 2010 3:42 PM

love the spelling error in the MGMT ad up top. whoops. also, why would they advertise a red rocks show on BV? annnnnnnnnd, can they actually sell out red rocks?!
Posted by jan jansson | April 2, 2010 11:16 AM
This is old news. We all read or saw Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist, and it was old news then. Get a new publicity stunt and get it now. Dum. Also, that artwork is kinda meh.
Posted by moving companies | December 1, 2010 3:03 PM
Guggenheim billed it as a performance piece and it was just an installation. Resultingly, the crowd simply waited for the "show" to start, limiting anyone's ability to freely explore the space (the ground floor was packed with indian-style seaters, and the balconies were lined with people holding onto their spots like grim death.
Posted by منتديات | January 9, 2011 12:54 PM
it makes no sense for them to deconstruct the entire TD North venue to play a show the next night ~50 miles south at an amphitheater (which probably would require a different stage setup anyway). They'd play Providence or Mohegan Sun before that (and I think those are both highly unlikely).

Great, "secret" events. Last time I went on a "secret" event, it sucked so hard that I wasted 20 bucks for nothing.
No thanks.
