Rufus Wainwright in Poughkeepsie - Feb. 12th (more by Eric Townsend)
Rufus Wainwright

Blackoutsabbath is a concept created by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, as promoted by the organization Blackout Sabbath. In an attempt to become more environmentally conscious, participants are asked to live "off the grid" as much as possible on a designated date by unplugging appliances, walking or cycling for transportation, turning out lights and decreasing energy usage in any other ways possible.
Rufus will performing with sister Martha Wainwright at the third annual Blackoutsabbath concert (an afternoon show) on Sunday, March 14th at Park Avenue Armory. Tickets are on sale now.
The program, much like the fantastic Stanford White architecture of the space, will be decidedly European. Martha will sing Piaf and I (drum roll please).............will sing the entire Berlioz song cycle, "Les Nuits d'Ete." Now, this later announcement comes with a warning - let me explain.

I don't consider this first run through of Hector's massive work as the official premiere of yet another daunting move I'm making in the world of classical music. If anything, it's a bench mark set to aid the rise of this gnarled bud that one day will see the light of day and blossom into a full blown lugubrious flower......in other words, I'm going to make a lot of mistakes. [Rufus Wainwright]

He'll be in the UK and Europe for shows this April and May (his new opera, Prima Donna, premieres in London April 12th). Rufus's new record, All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, comes out April 20th in the US.

the sound at the first blackoutsabbath show was so terrible. i couldn't hear a thing in the back (and the place wasn't THAT big). i always try to catch rufus when he's in town, but not when he's unamplified. i learned my lesson!

There must have been a lot of Hector Berlioz out there. Never underestimate those crazy motherfuckers.

1. It sold out really quick - the place is tiny (apparently about 35 by 35 ft)
2. Prima Donna premiered in Manchester last July (I was there)

Don't know why but I've actually never been a fan of Rufus Wainwright. Something about his voice I think..

Guggenheim billed it as a performance piece and it was just an installation. Resultingly, the crowd simply waited for the "show" to start, limiting anyone's ability to freely explore the space (the ground floor was packed with indian-style seaters, and the balconies were lined with people holding onto their spots like grim death.

Hey ya'll we lost another one.......but I'm glad to have grown up with gangstarr as representatives of this music that has an incredible history.....hip hop is a book that wrote itself and GURU was definetly one of its main characters.....we are all getting older.....and GURU is one of the MCs that added a soundtrack to our lives in the 80's and 90's.......the NAMES,PLACES and FACES come to mind when I hear a GANGSTARR track.........I thank GOD that he allowed GURU to shine in his short time...........REST IN EVERLASTING PEACE GURU

I've really never been a fan of Rufus, either. He's a fellow Canadian, but that's all I can say. ;)

Sorry, I got to say this is the first time I heard of Rufus. He seems like very popular with his music. I can always check out what kind of music he's into. Thanks for share!

Wonder if he'll be touring again in 2011? I missed him last year. Not much time for shows.

Look forward to seeing you in Dublin. I don't think we can reverse the few hundred years of industrialization that easily. If we stopped everything we are doing right now it might take the planet a thousand years to repair itself.
