Spoon

It was a happy St. Patrick's Day for Spoon. The Austin, Texas, indie-rock band received a hero's welcome during its hometown show on Wednesday at the South by Southwest music festival.

The group, this musical city's biggest export in recent years, has been on a roll as of late. Spoon's newest CD, the recently released "Transference," debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, selling more than 50,000 copies in its first week on shelves. In honor of its achievements, the band was rewarded with the highly coveted opening night, headlining slot at Stubb's, SXSW's largest venue.

The group didn't disappoint the hometown crowd, which had filled the venue to capacity well before Spoon actually took the stage. The quartet wasted no time getting to the good stuff, opening the show with the solid new single, "Written in Reverse," and then quickly following with the even stronger "Don't Make Me a Target," from 2007's "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga." The latter had a punky snarl to it, but also a dramatic piano line, reminding one of a classic Joe Jackson cut.

The one misstep, and it was a big one, came when Spoon covered the Damned's "Love Song." The band put its own spin on the track -- which I applaud -- but the lackluster, loopy result was something that would make punk-rock fans cringe. [Mercury News]

Spoon's tour with Deerhunter has arrived in NYC for a massive show at Radio City Music Hall tonight (3/26). The Strange Boys play first of three. Tickets are still on sale now seem to be gone.

The NPR-presented Austin showcase on March 17th also had Visqueen, The Walkmen, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Broken Bells (who played earlier that day in a parking garage) on the bill. More pictures from that show with Spoon's setlist below...

you know i really rarely write a negative comment on this site cause god knows there's enough of them and what's the point BUT...spoon is a good band that just is so boring live. right? i feel they're such a studio band, i just don't get seeing them at radio city. maybe i'm missing something.

I can't give my extra tickets away tonight, what's the deal? It's been sold out for weeks. StubHub, Craigslist... nothing

spoon was pretty good at SXSW, but sharon jones stole the show.

I saw Spoon play at Mercury a couple of months ago. The are the real deal no matter what stage they play. If an entire set list of great songs is not your thing, suck a dick.

I thought they'd been kicked off the tour for too many drugs or missing their sound check or something, I was wondering how openers go about kicking the headliner off the tour

OK, Walkmen. It's been four years--get Pete back on the bass full time.

I dunno, i was there and was impressed. Went with a friend whose wife was sick. Deerhunter was very impressive, they clearly weren't totally comfortable on such a big stage, but I'm definitely a fan now. And Spoon rocked. Totally NOT my cup of tea, and i still wouldn't say i'm a huge fan, but they put on a good show, sounded fantastic, and the crowd was totally into it. I thought they were very well suited to RCMH?
