Murphy's Law @ Culture Shock '09 (Serenaz)
Culture Shock

The lineup is out for Culture Shock 2010, which will take place April 16th and 17th at SUNY Purchase. Headliners for this year's fest are pop-punk band Bayside (avoid the "Beautiful Girls" cover on their MySpace) (and check out another version above) and indie-pop collective Los Campesinos (who'll play Irving Plaza April 22nd) Friday night, and rapper Jay Electronica and The Books on Saturday. The rest of the bill is a varied mix that includes Surfer Blood, Black Milk, Maps & Atlases, L Mag Band You Need To Hear Ava Luna, Maluca, Das Racist, The So So Glos and Turbo Fruits. The annual event isn't technically open to non-students. The full lineup is below.

Last year's lineup was headlined by Drake and The Cool Kids. In 2008, Fucked Up's headlining performance was cut short by the police.

The bands were announced earlier this month via film at an event at the school. That video, the lineup and more are below...

how full of shit is the organizer for this event?

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2010 11:06 AM

Ramapo College never did anything this good. I feel so inadequate.

Posted by Brian | March 31, 2010 12:38 PM

Brian, why not change that? Put Ramapoop on the indie rock map.

Well congratulations Purchase, you solved the problem of non-students attending Culture Shock by booking the worst line-up ever. Bayside? really?!?

Defeater is the best band on the bill and that's not saying much.

The only redeeming aspect of LevinxShock was people showing up/the press for Drake. Otherwise THAT was the worst one.

next years culture shock should be run by a girl!

Posted by amanda | March 31, 2010 8:47 PM

I like the lineup besides Bayside. Just leave early, it's fucking free.

Defeater rules, you must be deaf, dumb and blind. Incredible musicians, lyricists, and live performers. Theyre the real deal. I'm getting into that show somehow.

i love the line up

This is unbelievably bad, as every Culture Shock for the past 4 years has been, but at least the comments haven't turned into a flame war like last year.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2010 4:49 PM

Wow. Culture Shock has really gone to shit, hasn't it? So sad.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2010 7:21 PM

Really? Bayside is a bad headliner? Are you people insane? Bayside is a great band, brings in a large crowd and they are amazing live.

For the rest of the line-up = Ughh.

Students at Purchase have no real taste in good music and the fact that people are criticizing Bayside just shows that you are all idiots.

hey, at least it's still called Culture Shock.... remember when they wanted to call it Vulture Cock? wtf? Gwar was supposed to play when I was there, but they pussied out because it rained and they didn't want to get electrocuted.... lame.

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 7:58 AM

Defeater, Moving Mountains, Maps & Atlases, Surfer Blood and The Books for free, and you people are complaining?

Posted by Scaught | April 7, 2010 11:57 AM

This lineup fucking blows the only band id see on the bill is Defeater and Maps and Atlases. Das Racist would be fun to watch to but otherwise like everyone else has said the lineup has gone to shit. and yes the people who run this shit have no taste in music

ASTRO CLUB BLONDE ROCKS!!!

8:44 stay the fuck away

Bayside is the epitome of lame pop punk kids who pretend to skate and who've never ventured outside of their own home towns for long periods of time.

I've been to Culture Shocks '02 - '07 (when I graduated from Purchase), and it was such a huge disappointment to see no one rocking out for Bardo Pond earlier in the day. '04 and '05 were really killer.

Posted by JCE | April 16, 2010 5:42 PM

andrew wk did a secret set last night at the after party.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2010 6:14 PM

andrew wk, black milk, and jay electronica were killer. Bayside= lame ass long island/ CT jerks. hopefully there will be a much better organizer next year.

This used to be cool years ago when it featured SUNY Purchase Student Bands.

Posted by me | April 21, 2010 10:13 AM

I went to Purchase, and I used to book acts from 03-07. The last good Culture Shock years which displayed a wide breadth of music and different cultures took place during 03,04, and 05.

Some of the acts those years:

RZA
GZA
Bouncing Souls
Ted Leo
Animal Collective
RJD2
Lightning Bolt
Dan Deacon
Man Man
Slick Rick
Blonde Redhead
Yo La Tengo
Islands
Cursive-Still sucked :( (they played 08)
White Mice
Neil Hamburger
Extreme Elvis
World Inferno Friendship Society
Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings
Antiballas
Davendra Bernhardt (awesome!)
The Walkmen
The National
Cat Power
Magnolia Electric Company
Deerhoof

The organizer gets around 40k for two days, and all costs. Its difficult but can be done well.
