Beach Fossils & (crowd) Surfer Blood...
Beach Fossils
Surfer Blood

[Surfer Blood's] set on Saturday [2/27] was all material from the debut album, but what set it apart was the fun the band was having with the crowd -- enough so that a Weezer guitar tease gave way an audience-led run through "Sweater Song". The band persisted through some technical problems to end the show with a crazy stage and audience jumping version of "Swim" where most of the vocals were sang while John was held aloft by the crowd.
[NYC Taper who also recorded the set]
Also on the bill were Grooms, Morning Benders, Beach Fossils and Turbo Fruits.

The show was part of Surfer Blood's tour with Tubro Fruits (they also played Mercury Lounge on Sunday, Feb 28th). That trip continues down to SXSW, where all of the above bands will be performing, and beyond. The full dates are below.

Morning Benders' new record Big Echo, which comes out March 9th on Rough Trade, is streaming online.

Upcoming shows for Beach Fossils include a Kidrockers show on March 7th at the Living Room with Bottle Up and Go. Tickets are on sale.

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 2:26 PM

i think april 16th is the first day of culture shock
that'll be cool

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 2:43 PM

show was AWESOME

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 3:07 PM

white guys everywhere...

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 3:11 PM

The Phoenix date is at Trunk Space, not Thunk Space, for anyone that may be confused. The venue still sucks, regardless of how it is spelled.

Posted by Michael Lopez | March 2, 2010 3:31 PM

Is April 16th also when Titus plays Purchase? Must be Culture Shock

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 3:58 PM

nm titus is at purchase on 4/14. Surfer Blood definitely Culture Shock though

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 4:28 PM

culture shock is 1 for 1 so far!

Both Market hotel and Mercury Lounge were great shows. All the bands killed it. Any BV pics from the Mercury show?

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 5:19 PM

I thought the Wave Beach Coast Surfers were on this show too?

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 5:19 PM

5:19 went to both shows?
wow! superfans of super trendy buzz bands.
what can Wavves do for you this year?

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 5:38 PM

I couldnt believe how young surfer blood looked

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 6:02 PM

a weezer sing-a-long...? now that is fucking HIP!

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 7:02 PM

the morning benders would have killed if they were given the chance, the sound issues cut like 70% of their set time

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2010 7:41 PM

the only sound "issue" morning benders had was a microphone that went out during their first song. that got resolved in less than 5 minutes and they played for 25 minute more, then got an encore.

not exactly a raw deal for the first band on the bill

Found some videos of the show here, http://musictasting.blogspot.com/

i saw surfer blood sandwiched between screaming females and jeff the brotherhood
they didnt really cut it for me

Posted by Anonymous | March 3, 2010 1:22 AM

it was funny how much surfer blood was shitting on NY audiences in philly.

Posted by Anonymous | March 3, 2010 1:22 AM

Surfer Blood was... okay. Friends, bars, and the occasional shuffle would put them on and I honestly enjoyed some of their tunes. I started reading articles and then witnessed them in conversation with some attendees at their show. They're huge dicks. I'm not quite sure why. They had this Waaves-like chip on their shoulder. They're young--yes, but do they have to act like 14 year old boys growing their first few pubic hairs? Teenage angst much?

They're hyped, the blogs guzzle their semen, and for what it's worth it made sense at least. But I was turned off after witnessing their behavior and exchanges with people. You read articles and they seem pissed that people want to know about them, giving sarcastic responses that aren't even funny.

With an attitude like theirs-- they won't last long.

Beach Fossils are up on this website every other day, I just don't get it. They play lots of shows, and always seem to be on bills with great bands, but they are sooooooo bad.

Posted by Anonymous | March 3, 2010 9:26 AM

surfer blood are like the sweetest dudes on earth. they're super innocent and young and fresh faced and they're nice as can be. 8:58 is crazy, not to mention... who's up at 8:58am hating on 19 year old rock bands?

Posted by Anonymous | March 3, 2010 2:40 PM

2:40--because they're "young and fresh faced" that makes you think they're "nice?" Oh okay, that's completely logistical. ? What are you, some band member's defensive girlfriend?

They don't handle press well and treat journalists like shit. Fans were talking with them and they put on this mirage of superiority and snobbery. Maybe it's awkwardness but it's coming across the wrong way.

They're assholes and they're going to fuck it up if they keep it up. Look at Waaves--they made complete fools of themselves.

Posted by n y c | March 3, 2010 3:35 PM

Haha who is up hating on rock-bands at 8:58 am? Most of us have jobs that allow us to be up at early in the morning, we're not some "19 year old college kids who can sleep in when they please."

The post had nothing about hate, it was speaking a valid opinion and gave credit where it was due saying they had great tunes. It was a commentary about their attitudes.

If you think that's hate, then how do you figure the other garbage that is posted on BV? The nonsense "these guys suck dick" comments?

Posted by Anonymous | March 3, 2010 3:41 PM

I agree. I love these dudes and their music, but they come off arrogant or annoyed.

They put on a great show though!

Posted by Graham | March 3, 2010 4:10 PM

Never made it out to this - out of curioisty what time did Surfer Blood finally get on stage?

Posted by Anonymous | March 3, 2010 4:25 PM

they went on about 12:15

Posted by Anonymous | March 3, 2010 6:25 PM

Yo fuck that dude from beach fossils for having Jon Spencer's no-name Japanese guitar..

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2010 3:57 PM

Some excellant shots there- well done to the photographer!
