The Beets @ Death By Audio (more by Zach Stern)
The Beets

The Princetonian: What are your favorite venues to play?

The Beets: There is definitely a nice feel to house shows -- I guess it feels more like a communal thing, where you are on par with the people watching you (like they're just as important as you are for the show to happen). I think some of that gets lost when you play bigger venues. In terms of specific venues, we really like Dead Herring, which is actually someone's apartment. Death by Audio and Silent barn have always treated us great. They are run by really passionate people who are so easy to get along with.

What's the rock scene like in New York?

The Beets: New York is chock full of scenes and different bands, I wouldn't know where to begin. As for the scene we seem to be a part of, it is adored. It's great to be able to play shows with a community of people that you don't just respect musically but that you can get along with on a personal level. Some people hate it, some people love it and that's how it will always be. The important thing is that we adore doing what we're doing and glad we have found a venue to do it.

The Beets have a zillion and one shows coming up in many different venues starting with one at the Ace Hotel in NYC on Sunday night (3/7). Proof is in the picture which is with all dates below...

"band is playing 1001 shows in 4 days" press tag is the new "has an amazing album out / great live show"...

hard work is hard work sure - but the curtain has kinda started to fall on the gimmick. how about 1001 good shows?

^what the fuck are you talking about? seriously. i dont understand. what curtain? huh?

The Beets' music is whiny and obnoxious and generally unpleasant.

"The Beets: It's great to be able to play shows with a community of people that you don't just respect musically but that you can get along with on a personal level."

I originally missed the "just" and read this as "don't respect musically but that you can get along with on a personal level" because that's exactly how I feel about all of Brooklyn.

Has anybody ever seen this band play a bad show? Their sets are different every time - I've seen these guys more times than I can count and it's never the same. I've seen them play drony, Velvet Underground style sets, casual folky sets, frentic punk sets - I'm sure anybody who makes a point to see them multiple times at SXSW is in for a sincere treat. These dudes are the nicest people on earth and one of the best bands of the past twenty years. Haters to the left, or whatever.

the beets es auténtico y real. eso es lo que le hace falta a brooklyn y a ny.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2010 12:42 PM

why cant they play a show here in jackson heights?

Posted by jh_guy | March 7, 2010 12:53 PM

best band of the past twenty years AND totally nice guys in the same sentence negates your opinion. you must be totally fucking high.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2010 1:08 PM

12:29, are you insane / kidding? the beets are nice / throw a good loft party, yeah... but the bruar falls schedule isn't IT dude.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2010 1:19 PM

it doesn't really matter how many shows you've booked. i have friends who have played a ton of shows that are usually deemed high profile. you don't get blog coverage unless you snort coke with those who run them in wburg or have a pr firm/label.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2010 1:37 PM

the breslin is super

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2010 1:38 PM

nowadays perception of what is a "good show" is completely dependent upon the preconstructed narratives that media/the labels feed us. people were saying wavves put on a good show before his melt down. total slacker gets tons of coverage. neither of them can play music for shit.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2010 1:41 PM

the beets kick ass.

I live in the same building as the singer. When he moved in he had to visit all of the fellow residents to inform us he's a sex offender. Megan's Law bitches!!!

Posted by ripper | March 8, 2010 1:53 PM

...but it's cool...

Posted by cool person | March 8, 2010 2:24 PM

all i want to know is: has this band named themselves after the band from the Nickelodeon cartoon Doug. because if so, it deserves to be mentioned.
