Stardeath and the White Dwarfs

"Holy shit. If I had only one band to choose to see in concert it would be The Flaming Lips. Best concert I've ever been to, no contest. Friendly people, which makes sense: Flaming Lips fans are some of the friendliest people I know.

Words cannot do this concert justice. The music, the atmosphere, the smoke, the GIANT balloons filled with confetti that would POP in an explosion of rectangular colored shreds of paper, the dense cloud of pot - so thick you couldn't even smell the person next to you sparking up. And oh, the visuals, the fantastical videos they had, drippy gooey egg yolks, and naked dancing ladies, and naked drum-hitting ladies, and naked ladies dancing on the beach, and laughter, and love, and everything all around. I'm still glowing from the show." [Hilary]

In other words, just your average Flaming Lips show at Wellmont Theater in NJ last night. More pictures, the setlist of video of the band performing a Pink Floyd cover with opener Stardeath and White Dwarfs during the encore (they'll play Dark Side of the Moon in full again at Bonnaroo), below...

An excellent show, even if I didn't love all the songs they chose.

I have been seeing the lips every tour since 99-2000 and I must say I am liking them less and less as time goes on. The schtick is getting repretitive. Thankfully they revamped the setlist but the new stuff does nothing to me.

Didn't they do "Watching the Planets" on Conan's "Tonight Show"? I suppose that wasn't an actual gig, but either way, that was the first time ever.

But I'll stop nitpicking - it was a fantastic show, full of wonder as ever. I for one enjoyed the setlist shakeup. That full Bonnaroo "Dark Side" will be a blast.

Seen these guys at least a handful of times and this was probably my favorite show. I like a lot of the fuzzed out instrumentals of post-Soft Bulletin and they played several of them (Morning of Magicians/Pompeii Am Gotterdammerung come to mind). Combine those with the similar tripped out material on Embryonic and it makes for a sweet show.

I would definitely suggest seeing them on this tour if that's your thing. Great set.

Fantastic show last night, haven't seen them in a few years, had a blast, you'd be a fool to miss them

Aw, no photos of tour drummer kliph?

Posted by Freepster | April 20, 2010 11:13 PM

Kliph isn't just the tour drummer! I believe he's a full member now.

This show was really amazing!

I love it! You have to go to the Wellmont and see the Lips in Jersey....to get high and not have the anti-pot smokers get all in a huff or have a Bowery goon toss you out.

I always knew Jersey was a more advanced state than New "yes are a bunch of pussies" York.

Oh...I live in Connecticut.

They really need to integrate some pre-Yoshimi stuff into their set. I mean there's a lot more than just jelly to choose from...

They also played Taps. Don't forget about that.

Wonderful show. Tons of fun. One of the best live bands in the business.
