Godspeed you Black Emperor

"After years of inactivity, the Canadian post-rock juggernaut known as Godspeed You! Black Emperor is rumbling back to life.

The first order of business: curating and headlining ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas, taking place at Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead, England December 3-5. Other acts performing include Deerhoof, Mike Watt, the Ex, Tim Hecker, Scout Niblett, and Bardo Pond.

Then: In a note on their website, Godspeed promise a tour consisting of "a handful of British and European shows, and then nine American shows." And that's it... for now. As they say, "Until further introspection, WE WILL NOT BE FIELDING ANY OTHER OFFERS." They also aren't doing any interviews, so don't ask." [Pitchfork]

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:26 AM

Finally!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:32 AM

Refused breaking up was the best day of my life.

Love GYBE's music, but not their live show. They simply perform in the dark. That's it. Not that is what bad, just nothing special.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:38 AM

@11:38 agreed. seemed like a hippy drum circle live.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:48 AM

Standing in the dark? When I saw GYBE back around 2003 in Greenpoint, they were projecting homemade films behind them while they performed. I thought they did that all the time, no?

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:52 AM

11:38 and 11:48 are insane... Godspeed were easily one of the best live bands I have ever seen, and I saw them play many times. This is incredible news!

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:53 AM

this is awesome

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:53 AM

fantastic band, fantastic live show. great news.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:54 AM

Yeah they always performed with film projections made by Jem Cohen

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 11:55 AM

11:38 and 11:48 go enjoy your fag island...Ill be enjoying gsybe playing one of the greatest live shows ever

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 12:00 PM

good band but this press release seems a bit pretentious

they ain't the freakin' beatles or something..

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 12:11 PM

Was the last tour they did the one with 2 shows at Bowery and then 2 shows at Warsaw? If so, then those were indeed nothing special. Dark stage, no interaction.

I bet I hurt some fanboy's feelings. Get over it. GY!BE is not some sacred cow.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 12:19 PM

i saw them at KF with sweaty balls and one of those bowery shows. although great live, it puts you to sleep with those long drawn out lulls in their songs.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 12:20 PM

Amazing!

P.S. 11:48 - Hippie drum circle for the Apocalypse

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 12:32 PM

"...it puts you to sleep with those long drawn out lulls in their songs."

HAHAHA...you are such a moron!

lulls + crescendos = GY!BE

ps- I am sooooo psyched for these shows...NY and Philly dates please!

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 12:43 PM

already tellin the hates, fuck you all..
one of the most incredible live experiences ever and I have seen thousands of bands.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 12:59 PM

when is their cookbook going to come out?

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 1:06 PM

I have a feeling Bowery Presents will book them at Terminal 5 :(

Let it be at Bowery or MHOW please!

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 1:09 PM

ATP New York is looking more and more like the bastard stepchild of ATP. UK punters get Pavement, Belle & Sebastian and three nights of G!YBE. Stateside we've got bands that play NY all the time (Vivian Girls, White Hills) and the indie rock AARP (Breeders, Sonic Youth, Stooges). Pathetic, really.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 1:51 PM

you are right they are nothing like the beatles on the grounds they never released a shitty song in their lifetime and put on an amazing live show that people still talk bout years later no matter how many shows they've been to

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 2:10 PM

so psyched - with or without jem's projections, this will be great. as long as it isn't at t5. mhow would be ideal.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 3:01 PM

are they big enough to play radio city? would t5 sell out instantly?

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 3:02 PM

AWWWWWWW THE BAND ISN'T ACKNOWLEDGING US!!! WAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 3:23 PM

apollo would work

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 3:31 PM

T5 would be terrible for them, but MHOW and Bowery would probably be way too small for the demand, unless they plan on playing 2 or 3 nights

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 3:53 PM

i hate the walk to t5, especially going home...

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 3:55 PM

OH MY FUCKING GOD YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 4:25 PM

yawn

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 4:46 PM

Yes they are good live much better than on album, but yeah that press release seems a little too much. The always sell out two or three shows in Chicago, NYC, and Minneapolis.

I saw them in 2002 the night Bush started bombing Iraq which was atrocious but Efraim lost the crowd almost that was packed in because he yelled at the whole place about our tax dollars going to kill Iraqis which I hated that bush slaughtered 10,000 civilians in the first shock and awe, but the guy from God Speed should have shut the hell up cause no one in the crowd wanted Iraq to be bombed and we had no control over asshole bush and cheney.
You could hear many people saying over the music what the hell its not my fault or in my control what the bush regime does (that caused the deficit not Obama you tea bagger idiots).

He lost the crowd for a while with his misplaced words.

I wish they would play 2 nights at Webster Hall (no way they'll play BB or MHOW), but I have a feeling they'll probably play Terminal 5. If they have 9 shows in the US, most likely only 1 will be here. There's a possibility they'll play 2, but highly unlikely.

all that matters is the physical engagement. the people talking down, your loss, and thats okay, more room for me to be there, and more room for my mind to explode.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 6:26 PM

curating atp. let me guess, fucked up are playing it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2010 8:07 PM
