Firemen hose West 52nd Street after an underground transformer explosion near the "Late Show." (Late_Show) (you can see Roseland back there)
Manhole

"Firefighters and Con Ed are dealing with a third alarm manhole fire near 226 West 52nd Street. WCBS 2 reports, "It's believed a second transformer may have blown at 1697 Broadway, near the Ed Sullivan Theater. Flames could be seen shooting from the manhole and bits of the street were blown out from the blaze. Witnesses reported hearing a loud 'pops' from potential explosions in the manhole."

Some buildings were evacuated because extremely high levels of carbon monoxide were measured and Broadway between 50th and 54th were shut down. And a tipster writes, "Atoms for Peace, Thom Yorke's side project, is playing at Roseland tonight and the crowd of people that won't move" because they "have been waiting on line to get in since early this morning."" [Gothamist]

NOTE: I just got word that the show IS HAPPENING (see you there!)

UPDATE 2:. just got another update from someone else there that ""not definitely we'll know in a few minutes, as of now we're evacuated"" (as of 7:10pm)

UPDATE 3 It's on! Definitely 100% open, happening. Set times pushed back 30 minutes (see you there!).

And see pictures from last night HERE.

UPDATE 4:
And the so the show happened.

Maybe this will teach all those nerds a lesson: don't show up 6 hours early to a concert that you already have tickets for. It's a waste of time-- you'll eventually get in to see your show-- and you won't get hit by a flying, flaming manhole cover.

glad i went last night

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 7:17 PM

Its bad enough that they only play for an hour and 20 minutes, but now flying manhole covers!?!?! I'm glad I saved my money.

Thom died in the explosion...just got the NYT News Alert

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 7:31 PM

@ 7:31 - that's really not very funny

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 7:36 PM

What's not funny is the $40 shirts and hour and 20 minute set, that's more of a tragedy then his demise

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 7:39 PM

@7:36- Too soon?

Posted by Venkman | April 6, 2010 7:44 PM

Oh its On yall! Thom York dance off.

Dagnabbit, I told y'all it was safer in Mexico!

radiohead plays like 80 minute sets. what do you expect from him? he has one solo record. there is a sweet opener. it's not like they're doing 'evening with'

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 8:26 PM

fuck are you complaining about set times for? an hour is suffice for a show, anything beyond can be pushing it, depending on the genre.

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 8:32 PM

I've been to the Manhole Explosion before. For a gay bar, it's pretty rockin.

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 8:37 PM

@ 8:26

radiohead definitely played longer than 80 minutes when i saw them...and that was at a festival.

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 8:40 PM

i wish i were there again. right now. so bad.

Posted by ahhhhhhh | April 6, 2010 9:11 PM

Anonymous is such a dick.

90 minutes of a Thom Yorke set is worthy so much more than hours and hours of most of what is out there. At the end you are crazy dead of all the dancing, the sweat, the awesomeness and the extase that they bring to the stage. Only being there to know how amazing and different they sound, it is like having an eargasm right in front of that stage.

just too many jokes waiting to be played out

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2010 10:08 PM

Take it easy, Sam. Save some jizz for baby making.

man.....this was boring and not good. i love radiohead and kid a is part of my dna but thom yorke NEEDS jonny greenwood. it was cool and wtf to see see secretaries from staten island sing along to everything in its right place but otherwise, man.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 12:27 AM

I totally touched boners with Thom Yorke after the show! SWEET!

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 12:35 AM

Tonight was so much more intense than last nite.
Atoms for Peace is a band. Period.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 12:36 AM

Went both nights. Tonight's show was better than last night on almost every level.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 12:44 AM

Agreed. People need to stop thinking of this as Thom Yorke solo, it's way more than that -- and not just because of Flea. The whole rhythm section is ridiculously talented, and of course Nigel Godrich is brilliant.

Posted by hornblower | April 7, 2010 12:59 AM

Their melodies definitely reminded me of Hail to the Thief as well as a strong Kid A/electronic background. But you could also hear the strong Flea induced funk. I liked it, though, a lot of their songs sorta sounded a like. And yah, Roseland's always crowded as fuck. Good show, though, not worth the $63.

Posted by NattyB | April 7, 2010 1:04 AM

$63? That's what this shit cost? Fuck me.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 1:09 AM

One of the worst band names I've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 1:28 AM

^^
so difficult to find this show boring. though, I do know what you mean about the secretaries...lol

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 1:48 AM

I am someone who never really liked radiohead - and I thought tonight was brilliant. I agree about the rhythm section being so outstanding. atoms for peace were fantastic.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 2:23 AM

manhole explosion is more exciting than anything you'll see on stage tonight

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 3:15 AM

that was suck ...

man.....this was boring and not good. i love radiohead and kid a is part of my dna but thom yorke NEEDS jonny greenwood.
^^

Jonny Greenwood fans NEED to accept that the Genius of Radiohead IS Thomas Yorke. No Thom, no Radiohead. Period. BTW, A4P rock!

Posted by MarkVI | April 7, 2010 7:13 AM

@7:13 and Radiohead fans in general need accept this band is not beyond criticism, everything they do is not gold...

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 8:07 AM

Band was very very good. Show was excellent. "Earser" material rocked up million times better than the album. Roseland is a shithole, plain and simple. $63 was too much. And $40 t-shirts is horrible. I got some hate for that....

Posted by soysalami | April 7, 2010 9:26 AM

Show was fucking awesome. 30 years from now, all you whiny bitches complaining about it will be telling your kids how amazing the show was.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 9:28 AM

I'm old and a long time radiohead fan. I've even taken a couple of road trips to see the band play on tour. (Radiohead head?, get it?)
In general I thought the eraser was only about a 50% interesting album. 50% of the songs I'd probably skip if listening to the whole thing through. Thats kind of how i felt at the show. Half of the time it was an amazing display of talent and the other half of the time i found myself looking around the crap hole known as roseland ballroom. (the place where sound goes to die) Highlights for me were harrowdown hill, cymbal rush, fog, feeling pulled apart by horses.
Otherwise not the 2+ hour end to end lovefest that a radiohead show is.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 9:54 AM

Adam for Peace much?

Posted by Adam | April 7, 2010 9:59 AM

Hey manhole, explode much?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 10:01 AM

I was very dissapointed in the show..primarily because the sound in Roseland is HORRIBLY BAD! I was by the soundboard and I couldn't understand any of the vocals and the bass was muddy. On top of that and waiting in line for 4 hours (not the bands fault!) and being crammed in like a sardine in Roseland made for an unenjoyable show!

PS Was Stipe there again? I think I saw him dancing in the balcony to Rained All Night...that was amuzing whoever that was!

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 10:06 AM

I was there. Show was awful. Extremely boring.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 10:10 AM

Wasted 3 hours of my life. The show was miserable.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 10:28 AM

I wasn't there, but the show was terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 10:41 AM

I thought half the show was fantastic & exciting & the other half lagged. Whoever said it was a bell curve the other day was right. Everything after "Everything in its Right Place" was a little dull, which was essentially the whole of the encore.

And yeah, I'm kind of regretting spending $40 on my t-shirt, but I thought they looked cool! (I got a poster too... I should have just stuck with that.)

Posted by M | April 7, 2010 10:42 AM

The show would have been way better if Ween played instead.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 10:53 AM

whose manhole exploding seeing Thom?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 11:03 AM

The show was horribly disappointing.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2010 11:12 AM

the last two songs of the encore were mindblowing!
