Mountain Man

The first-ever Mountain Man Fest (not affiliated with the band Mountain Man) is tentatively set for July 24th in Saratoga Springs, NY. I say tentative because for the fest to happen it first has to be funded in full through a Kickstarter page with the goal of $65,000. What all that money is being used for isn't 100% clear, but the fest has until May 12th to make that goal. For a ticket, you need to "donate" at least $35. As of this writing it looks like they've sold 12 with "1488 of 1500 remaining".

Though that's a daunting goal (1,500 regularly priced tickets plus other donations), the "confirmed" lineup so far isn't that bad if you consider how much it would cost you to see each band separately (or as the fest puts it, "You (yes you!) get to see 12 hrs+ of amazing bands"): Islands (their only show currently), HEALTH (who are coming to NYC in June), Real Estate, Phantogram, Woods, Summer Camp, Memoryhouse, Pill Wonder, Family Portrait, Cults, Eternal Summers and Yip Yip ("You'll also be blessed with the sweet satisfaction of knowing that YOU helped make possible this history making musical event"). Underwater Peoples Records are involved in sponsoring the fest (four bands from the label are playing the show).

Another version of the cool poster art (which you can buy as part of giving them money) and the lineup again are below...

I'd pay $3.50, not $35.00

in all seriousness tickets should be around $15

Could someone from the event explain what the $65,000 will be used for? I am assuming band guarantees and venue rental and security, etc - but that couldn't possibly account for any more than 20% or 25% of the requested total. This seems like a lot of money to ask for.

Also, the Kickstarter page says that Saratoga Springs is three hours from NYC. It will take you at LEAST four hours to get up there.

little steep, all i want to see is real estate

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 12:21 PM

By far the ugliest posters I've ever seen.

agree to all above comments. i mean, this fest sounds sick but def not worth $35. and yea, those posters are god awful

yea, i'm all game for paying money for a good festival, and this is a decent line-up and Saratoga is very nice, although super packed in summer time, but um, isn't it the PROMOTER's job to raise the money, not the fans!? we buy the tix!!

sounds stupid

cults??? are they touring

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 12:53 PM

this is some backwards-ass shit. i hope those 12 people that bought tickets all work for the production company. but seriously, i'm gonna announce a festival, too. i'll set up a paypal and you can tell me who you want me to book when you donate 50 bucks. i promise they'll be there if you ask for them. sound good?

Mountain Man Fest = the new All Points west

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 1:03 PM

Islands and Health probably get at least 5 grand guarantees for this.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 1:05 PM

This is like Waynestock.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 1:06 PM

This is such a cool idea, I hope they make the goal. Great line-up.

Saratoga is a little over three hours from NYC. Nice town. Worth the trip up for this. Plus you can blow some money at the racetrack after the show.

If this doesn't happen, I may cry.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 1:30 PM

Are any of these actual bands??

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 1:41 PM

another ticket sold!

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 1:46 PM

That is so nice of them to let handicapped kids make the posters for the show.

"this history making musical event"

Yes, this will be historic just like the Titanic.

Overprice tickets + shady promoters + mediocre bands = giant mess.

Have fun in Saratoga Springs everybody.

another ticket sold!

if anyone thinks Health is getting 5K guarantees, i wanna know what you're smokin

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 5:59 PM

wait, so.... you "donate" a minimum of 35 dollars, but there is really no guarantee that this will even happen. Also, it's a donation, so there's no way you're getting that back, right?

this feels less like a music festival and more like a big business scam

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 6:15 PM

I like Real Estate and Islands and it seems like it could be a nice place for a festival...but definitely shady...donate...may not happen. Also i agree that Health are probably getting 5K

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 6:23 PM

BV should donate ten cents a 'meh'

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 6:58 PM

Kickerstarter functions on a "pledge" system. You can pledge as much as you want, but if they don't reach their $65,000 goal, you don't pay a cent. So, not shady. Just trying to put on a festival within their means.

When is my credit card charged?
If this project is fully funded on May 12, 08:59pm EDT your credit card will be charged along with all the other backers of this project.

So my card is only charged if funding succeeds?
Yes! That's part of what makes Kickstarter special. If a project isn't fully funded, no one pays anything.

So what are these bands supposed to do if the fest doesn't happen? They're just SOL?

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 9:17 PM

I've never heard of any of these bands. Isn't it a given that you should get a sorta name-brand for at least one of the headliners for one of the nights of a music fest?

Posted by flurr | April 14, 2010 9:57 PM

This is a cool idea, but $35 is just too steep when your big names are Islands, Health, and Real Estate. What happens if they hit their goal early because of a few big donations from people who want a booth or whatever? Do tickets go down to $15 and the 200 people dumb enough to drop $35 early get screwed?

Basically this lineup needs to sell out the equivalent of Webster Hall. That would be doable if the show was actually at Webster, where tickets would be less than $20 and the metrosexual lumberjack crowd could take the L to Union Square. Things change when prices hit $35 and you've got to go 3+ hours upstate.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2010 10:28 PM

most of the $65k goes to the coke on Islands rider

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2010 4:40 PM

I think this idea is really stupid. I find it really annoying how they are asking for "donations" to this dumb thing. $65,000? Maybe if it were for a good cause..like cancer research. Give me a break. There is no way this is ever going to happen.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2010 3:54 AM

It looks bad for this thing. $7000 pledged with 2 days to go. They'll need to raise 58K in 54 hours.
