Child Abuse

From a recent interview with Child Abuse:

Do you condone the abuse of children?
Tim: Only if there's something in it for me.
Luke: Absolutely not. Boring answer, I know... but who does condone abusing children?
Oran: No

Would you consider your music an appropriate soundtrack during the abuse of children, whether you condone the act or not?
Tim: Not really. I think Radiohead would be better. Actually no... Vampire Weekend.
Luke: Hmm good question... .I think the most perverse soundtrack would have to be something from the bel canto tradition... something light and airy... maybe a piece from a Verdi opera.
Oran: I don't think it's appropriate to abuse children to any music.

Somwhere in between noise, metal, and avant-jazz lies Child Abuse, the wildman trio from NYC that welcomed their new album Cut and Run via Lovepump United last week. The band recently debuted the new track "Bebe" via the Village Voice, but are welcoming a new song in the form of "Froze Toes" available for download above.

Child Abuse are celebrating the glitchy, cofrontational Cut and Run at a show at Glasslands on 4/26, with an assist from Mick Barr (who played Europa with Krallice, pics are coming), Skeleton$ and Grooms (who play PA on 5/5 with Hot Hot Heat and Bowery on 5/26 with Holly Miranda).

i have to say, it's hard to support a band so ill-advisedly named. there are horrible band names (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart), ridiculous (MM/DD/YY, !!!) and then there are ones like The Muslims when once the band gets some success they feel compelled to change (never mind that they rode said "band name controversy" to the relative-success in the first place). if this band is any good (and they're probably not), i guarantee they'll be called the "soft plastic toys" or something else equally mundane in about 6 months once they get some press.

They need to change their name to Douche Nozzles immediately.

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 6:13 PM

hey anonymous 6:06....thanks for your thoughts...maybe you should listen to the band before you spout off your words of wisdom....this band is good. I don't think Child Abuse was asking for your support to begin with. I know these great band you might like...there called Insane Clown Shoe Posse, Heavy Wolf Baby, The Silver Dead White Wolf Kids Bear Bells, Black Clown Golden Wolf Deer Crystal

"There called"

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 6:52 PM

6:25- I think that 6:06 is more or less referring to the fact that the name is "Child Abuse." That isn't a cool name. It's like naming your band, "Shaking Baby Syndrome," "Crib Death" or "Nazi's for Neptune." The subject matter is the problem. It's inappropriate.

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 7:22 PM

Change the name dudes.its not cool

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 7:58 PM

not sure what you're getting at 7:22. Inappropriate for whom?

Posted by Dave | April 21, 2010 8:10 PM

Scraping Foetus of the Wheel
Anal Cunt

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 8:50 PM

7:22 here - It's inappropriate for most people. Child abuse isn't funny. It shouldn't be a band name. If these guys want to make a name for themselves, try doing it with the music as opposed to having some shock name to cause a stir and get people to listen. It's a lame gimmick and it's in poor taste. Ask someone who lived with it growing up if they would support a band with a name like that. If I was abused, I know I wouldn't.

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 9:19 PM

Why would anybody think that it is a good idea to name a band Child Abuse? What a bunch of dicks.

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 10:21 PM

alot of butt hurt going on in here.

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 10:54 PM

yah! let's get mad at something totally abstract (their music is) and ignore the things we could be doing- like preventing abuse in homes all over the world, giving to child abuse charities, and/or volunteering at a community center for underprivileged kids!

Posted by greg | April 21, 2010 11:15 PM

11:15 got it.... everyone else didn't

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 11:26 PM

Listen to their music and tell me it's not fucking brutal like child abuse.

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2010 11:33 PM

For all the literal minded folks out there taking their name to heart, your wrong. The are not promoting Child Abuse. What are they GG Allin?
NO. Seems to be a lot of that in NYC these days with the simple minded kids. Its either disingenuous ironic music, rehash without the acknowledgement of the past musicians, or real bland indie metal everywhere.

Child Abuse is a great band and the drummer is a good guy to talk to and has good taste.

Listen kids go back and look at 1980's punk bands for example and realize those very non PC names were not meant to be taken literally( JFA, Reagan Youth, Killer Pussy, or even a non punk band who are intelligent such as Devo dont want people devolving backwards, but we are apparently.

And yes Child Abuse is not punk so much and the guys can play their asses off.

They've got nothin' on the Child Molesters:

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | April 22, 2010 3:17 AM

child abuse

Posted by awesome | April 22, 2010 8:48 AM

the poor three guys didnt know how to answer the question. one was trying to be funny. the other took it seriously and was like no way in hell. the third guy shifted.

child abuse can mean any kind of "abuse". Doesn't have to be physical or sexual. Maybe listening to bad music is a form of child abuse and they're being ironic, who knows.

people should focus on actions before they focus on words.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 10:04 AM

I don't think anybody thinks they are advocating child abuse or believes they can't call their band whatever they want, just seems like a really poor choice they made, and for many people, it will be a turn off. Frankly, I am not too interested in them because of the horrible band name they chose for themselves. Good luck to them though. I'm sure some people will give them a chance and love the music.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 10:34 AM

Good point 10:04. They really didn't know how to answer the question. You would think they would know considering they are going to get that question over and over again. Who knows though. After listening to a snippet of their "music" I doubt they will be around long enough to have many more interviews.

And to td - A band name like Killer Pussy isn't in the same category as a band name like Chid Abuse. It's apples and oranges. Shock value with a curse word in the title is one thing. Naming a band after child abuse is another.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 10:46 AM

TD must be in the band or friends with one of them to defend them. I am not a kid. I am 28 years old with a child on the way and I find it in poor taste. Change the name of the band. Even if they don't b/c they think they are above that, they will just fade into obscurity like half the bands that are covered on this website.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 10:49 AM

uh, they've already been around for five years. they aint goin nowhere.

Posted by greg | April 22, 2010 10:49 AM

and i hate to break it to you, 1049. google child abuse lovepump and see how much press they've gotten in the five years. quite a lot!

Posted by greg | April 22, 2010 10:50 AM

uh, they've already been around for five years. they aint goin nowhere.

Exactly. There aren't going anywhere.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 10:58 AM

i'm not so sure child abuse is concerned with 'going somewhere' with their music. they do what they do, that's it.

Posted by greg | April 22, 2010 10:59 AM

Greg, you keep trying to defend this band when all you are really doing is proving how shitty they are. Why wouldn't they want to have a successful music career?

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 11:01 AM

it's cool. you obviously don't get it.

Posted by greg | April 22, 2010 11:03 AM

No I get it. The band is lame so they chose a stupid name in hopes of attaining press. It worked but their music doesn't back it up.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 11:09 AM

11:01 because this band is focused on their music rather than an industry standard "success". Also how does this prove the band to be shitty? They are all really talented musicians all opinions aside.

Look each side has some solid points but to those of you with children who are very offended by this you probably will never listen to this band again. Your children will never listen to this band. Children who have been abused will probably never listen to this band.... but to tell them to change their band name is a bit outrageous! They can name their band whatever they want. Freedom of speech.

So keep speaking up about how the band name is wrong. That is fine, but at least make a solid argument rather than just calling for them to change their name?

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 11:11 AM

i think there has been plenty of good points as to why they should consider changing their name.

I know they are trying to be "hip" and "indie" but c'mon.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 11:18 AM

no, 1109. you dont get it. really. you dont get it. and you'll never will.

Posted by greg | April 22, 2010 11:26 AM

not sure why this band is so offensive when other names like 'the black lips' get a pass?

Posted by alex | April 22, 2010 12:41 PM

these guys have been around for years so no they are not going to change the name...i honestly can't even fathom why you people read any music related websites if you are that shocked by words. why don't you go write some angry letters to the catholic church instead of debating the moral implications of a nyc rock band. :S

Posted by matthew666 | April 22, 2010 3:05 PM

i really object to the band name "Iron Maiden" because it promotes medieval torture which was like totally wrong...

Posted by anonymous | April 22, 2010 4:51 PM

explain it then greg. if you have all the answers, please share with us peons.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2010 10:54 PM

You all should start a band called Whining Bitches w/ Fibromyalgia. What a bunch of over indulged under sexed humorless wimps. Your amusing protests against the name Child Abuse show you people to have a frightened and unsophisticated suburban cultural palette. I would worry less about the name Child Abuse and more the implications of the type of gentrification ipso facto mallification your aggregate behavior promotes here in Brooklyn. I sleep easy at night knowing that the grey sullen lemings of Brooklyn Vegan will be largely ignored by those who really matter. Enjoy your coffee break on North Six nerds.

Posted by Brad Frenkington | April 27, 2010 3:06 PM

It's really not complicated. They don't give a rats arse about what you, me, or anyone else thinks, they're doing it for themselves. If you like it, great. If not, who cares? It's a pretty common punk/grind/whatever sentiment.... Either enjoy the band for what they are or stop whining and find something you do like. Simples.

Posted by Jugglemonkey | May 5, 2010 12:31 PM

These guys are a lot of fun; great live show. They kinda remind me of what it would sound like if The Locust took promethezine before a gig.

Great stuff!

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 11:57 PM

child abuse is a great great great band.

Posted by jahelle | October 3, 2010 4:51 PM

i just saw child abuse, they kinda kicked major ass. Who cares about their lame name, you guys/gals aren't really that sensitive are you?
If you are, this whole internet thing may not be for you.

Posted by Aaron R. | October 6, 2010 11:23 PM

Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie were really good albums. Got them when they came out, still throw them on at times and think they're great. It saddens me when I hear bands from that era when I was a teenager and hear their new stuff and it's so clear how they've lost it, they sound desperate to recapture a sound/magic that they haven't had in 15 years (holy shit).... And then I realize that is not unlike a lot of us.
