"About to see the hold mother fucking steady at music hall of wburg. I've been drinking all day in preparation." - David Chaitt

The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady hosted a pair of NYC shows on Saturday (4/17) to celebrate their new album, Heaven Is Whenever, out May 4th, and its limited Record Store Day release earlier that day (miraculously, the album remained unleaked up to that point, so those that braved the line for one of their store's 5 or so copies were the first to hear it). Now it's legally streaming in full online.

The shows were also a chance to show off the band's new touring members - guitarist Steve Selvidge (ex-Lucero) and keyboardist Dan Neustadt (ex-The World/Inferno Friendship Society) - who replaced key player/accordionist Franz Nicolay, and who'd been with the group for less than two weeks.

The late crowd at Music Hall of Williamsburg (the earlier show was at Bowery Ballroom) were part enthused revelers, part intent observers. Those up front were going wild. The set mixed old and new - "Massive Nights," "Stevie Nix," and late-in-the-set "Stay Positive" came off riotously, while the newer, more neat and polished songs like "The Weekenders" and "Rock Problems" were more subdued (time will tell how those play live post-release).

The band seemed sober and focused, a good or bad thing depending on your perspective. Craig Finn raised a sole bottle of beer to end the night, "I think I've earned this." (Compare to the two NYC shows by LCD Soundsystem a week prior, with frontman James Murphy demoing his new album blissfully shitfaced.) With the new album, the Hold Steady have clearly done some growing up. Appropriately, their next show set for New York will be at the regal, seated Beacon Theatre on October 7th.

NYC Taper has a recording of the Bowery show. More pictures from Music Hall of Williamsbug and both setlists below...

Good show I thought, some of the new stuff continues in the vein of what they've been doing, some of it a bit different. Some video I shot of the new stuff, at the Bowery Ballroom show:

BV or Mr. Frisicano may want to edit the piece and change "Positive Jam" to "Stay Positive". "Positive Jam" was the first song played at the Bowery and was never played at MHOW.

Crowd at the Bowery pretty much sucked until the end, when they finally came alive.

6:13 again - also "Chips Ahoy" was only played at Bowery, not MHOW. Are we sure Mr. Frisicano was at the MHOW show?

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2010 7:30 AM

damn it's strange to see BV use random Twitter posts as sources.

some of us go to BV to get a break from the inane echo-chamber bullshit, so that's the last thing anyone expects or wants on a blog as authoritative as this one.

"change "Positive Jam" to "Stay Positive". "Positive Jam"

fixed, thanks. I knew that didn't look right. As the setlist we even posted confirms.

"6:13 again - also "Chips Ahoy" was only played at Bowery, not MHOW. Are we sure Mr. Frisicano was at the MHOW show?"

Yes, he was there. I saw him there! Also fixed. hungover writing on a Sunday. :(

"damn it's strange to see BV use random Twitter posts as sources.

the only Twitter "Source" in this post is a quote about how drunk someone (else) got before this show.

for a relatively recent "rock" band, how come I never see a single young fan in any pics of their fans?

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2010 10:54 AM

10:54 is easily misled - there is in fact an abnormally high number of young fans for this band of somewhat older guys who play Americana-esque rock. This is the band for the teens who don't scenester-it-up on flavors of the month. In fact, the rowdiness and excess in the front at MHOW was from all those teens (who are admittedly nicer in their moshing than the older drunken frat guys).

I was at their first show EVER in that very same building.
