Zola Jesus @ Bowery Ballroom in April (more by Lori Baily)
Zola Jesus

Zola Jesus, singer Nika Roza Danilova who's been likened to Diamanda Galas, Siouxsie and Karin Andersson (check out for yourself above), has a few notable shows coming up this June and July. First, she's on the bill for NXNE in Toronto June 14th-20th.

After that, she comes to NYC for a show on June 19th at Glasslands.

Then later im the summer, Zola Jesus plays with Bear in Heaven at their free South Street Seaport show on July 9th. Bear in Heaven also play Terminal 5 with Metric on May 16th, and have a ton of tour dates (including some with Twin Sister), which are posted below.

Further, you can catch Zola Jesus supporting Wolf Parade at Terminal 5 on July 13th (and on a couple of their dates on the West Coast). Tickets are still on sale. That's around the same time Wolf Parade's new record, Expo 86, comes out on Sub Pop. The cover is below.

All right, I've warmed up to her new EP, but she is not even close to Diamanda or Siouxsie or Karin! If you really listen, and I mean really listen, you'll hear traces of Bonnie Tyler . . . maybe Kim Carnes, but there is not a damned similarity to any of the three that you have compared her too!

You know, why don't we stop the comparison shopping and just let Zola be Zola. Isn't that enough?

THIS BITCH IS NOWHERE NEAR DIAMANDA GALAS's level of artistry except for the makeup. Wake the fuck up, critics!

First commenter is right, no one with ears who is even half informed would compare her to Diamonda Galas... She could never hope to match Diamonda's vocal range and I'll wait to see how her thematic range will develop. The comparison between the two is lazy as shit, I really can't see a reason to compare them other than the most superficial similarities that fall squarely into idiotic critical languge like being "dark" or whatever and that sometimes Diamonda will scream. But from whisper to roar they are nowhere near on the same level, at least not if you like either of them, to me it's kind of a diss to Diamonda Galas.
