Washed Out @ Mercury Lounge (more by Benjamin Lozovsky)
Washed Out

Washed Out and Small Black, whose March & April tour together already brought them to Mercury Lounge for two nights and to Music Hall of Williamsburg for one, have more shows scheduled together. One of them is in NYC, and soon. They'll play the Bell House in Brooklyn on May 5th. Tickets are on sale.

The Bell House show happens one day before Washed Out opens for Beach House at Webster Hall (sold out). After NYC, BH & WO continue touring to Philly and Baltimore. Washed Out and Small Black will tour Europe together starting at the end of May. Beach House will be back in NYC in July to open for the National in Prospect Park. By then, Washed Out and Beach House will have both played the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago. All dates below...

I saw Small Black at the Echoplex in LA. I like the recorded material but the band is a joke live. Lead singer in a headband, bassist with 'ironic' Lady Gaga shirt, drummer struggling to keep time with audio playback and keyboardist wearing a members only style jacket with pushed up sleeves and a flipped up collar. The lead singer also graced us with his inbetween song banter such as "I love LA...life is so easy out here!" Really, really poor performance.

totally agreed with the comment above. I saw this show in chicago @ Empty Bottle and Small Black was crap live, totally forced performance. Also thought they ruined the songs they did Washed Out. The singer of Small Black sang every word of the Washed Out songs basically because he had nothing else to do on stage very distracting. Washed out wasn't bad with a backing band but i enjoyed the songs he did on his own better.

Not really feeling the anonymous fashion/banter shit. Comes off as standard issue haterspeak™.

Saw PP, SB & WO in SF and thought the whole line up was strong and diverse, from the goth hop to tight vibes to hazy crooning.

Sorry, Ryan that you are not really 'feeling' my banter.

I liked Small Black recordings but they really sucked live. I had purchased their music and decided to see them live. I paid my money for a ticket and watched their performance - and it was not good - but I am glad that I took a chance and formed an opinion based on my first-hand experience. Both audio and visual elements (including 'costumes') contribute to a performance and unfortunately for Small Black, all of those elements were poor on the evening I saw them perform in LA.

I now know not to see them again. They are Shit™ live.

Both recent NYC shows were tight. Costume choices whatever - the music was well executed and sounded great. Sometimes the venue, sound guys, or whatever can get in the way. But when it comes off their sound takes you to another place.

Good shit boys - keep it up.
